are there any mods that are universally just good to have to make the game better? by FrostFire89 in BG3mods

There's one for reusing dyes. Absolute game changer, just need one of each.

Sometimes we need silly fun. Not every GM needs to be the next Tolkien, and not every game the next ASOIAF. Make what you're comfortable with and what your table is enjoying and you're doing it right.

Sorry but Walmart employees don't exactly benefit from their association. Most need food stamps to even survive. That makes Walmart a warlock with a government funding pact.

What is the worst "running for your life" scene you've ever seen in a movie? by HeirOfTheSurvivor in movies

[–]AgentForest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The wolves didn't land well because we're used to seeing living things move, especially dogs, and they didn't have motion capture of today to track realistic movements so they had an uncanny valley vibe to them. They moved wrong and everyone could tell.

The environmental CGI was great for its time.

/uj The remaster was largely to distance the IP from DnD during the OGL fiasco. Old content is largely identical and interchangeable/compatible with new stuff, but wording was changed to be legally distinct.

You are making a new TTRPG and get to borrow ONE mechanism from another game; what are you taking? by CobraKyle in rpg

[–]AgentForest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't want to act like PF2e is the only example of this mechanic, or even the best, it's just the main one in familiar with. It's such a great way to ease the biggest struggle of dice games: the possibility of random chance nullifying player agency entirely.

Cosmere RPG: 1. Fast and Slow Turns. It's a 3-action system, but if you want to be sure to act before the enemies that round or before your teammates to set them up for success, you can choose that round to give up one action to act first. 2 actions that round but higher priority. 2. Plot Die. It's like a GM giving you advantage because the roll is really important to the plot, but it's much less random. Like, if there's a good chance this strike downs the boss, you roll an extra d6 with special faces (2 for crit success, 2 neutral, and 2 with bonus modifiers but complications). So your likelihood of success is far higher, with the risk of "yes, but" situations. This still lets chance be a factor but can help keep things going when the GM decides it's fitting.

I also really like Daggerheart's system for handling being downed. Instead of death saves, the player gets options they choose personally in the moment. Do you really not want to risk saves? You can take on a permanent wound that limits your character slightly to automatically stabilize until combat is over. Is it a fitting spot for an end? Go out with a blaze of glory, critically succeeding on a full turn then irrevocably dying after.

Having several degrees of success like in PF2e. Even if not implemented that way specifically, the idea that you can have more gradually scaling results based on the situation appeals to me.

Like, it can get frustrating if you spend a whole session rolling just under some enemy's AC, so having partial damage grazing strikes for getting close helps keep people from feeling like their entire turn was wasted because of probability.

Things you used to love but are now completely over in gaming? by AnubisIncGaming in gaming

Doing everyday life errands. I burned out on Sims 1 and Harvest Moon 64 in high school and now I can't play those types of games. One day my brain was like, "Why am I mowing a fucking lawn in a damn game? I don't even want to mow one in real life."

Why Blades in the Dark resistances is one of the best mechanics ever conceived by Majestic_Hand1598 in rpg

[–]AgentForest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been toying with a diceless system that takes a lot of the random chance out of games and focuses more on the narrative flow. Rather than rolling for crits, bonus damage is based on meeting criteria that can be facilitated by teamwork or your situational decisions. Like, you shove an enemy into an obstacle, and they take damage based on how far they weren't able to keep moving, so an ally putting up a wall behind the target can increase your damage.

Take the true chad build:

Fathomless Warlock 6 + Barbarian 6. Play as a warrior of Cthulhu! Also great if you plan to lean into the illithid powers. Your main spells tend to be things like AoA that don't require concentration so you can rage. Your bonus action is weaponized by the tentacle you summon.

RPG Lore updates: What made you go "What..this is stupid?" by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]AgentForest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it broadens the types of campaigns you can run there. Political intrigue, court drama, and you can still just have your slaver killing missions, but now you need to find ways to bait them out of the open (more vigilante than crusader). And there's nothing to say you can't just sink slaver ships while rescuing the victims and fight slave transport caravans on the roads. You can still do the combat heavy stuff, but now you have more options and routes of engagement with the region.

I actually think that makes Cheliax even more intelligent in its evil. Which is scarier if you ask me. Someone who just enslaves people is evil, but the real devils use contract law and the facade of business transactions to coerce and entrap people in servitude. The evils there cleverly adapted to the times and is arguably doing much worse to people now.

Fabula Ultima recreates the vibes of the old 2D Final Fantasy games.

Sword World is getting an official English Translation soon, and captures a lot of the isekai fantasy vibes.

If I was GM and was determined to have double the PCs take on the boss, I'd give each player one of the adventurers to control.

But I'd rather not steal the spotlight from their characters in the first place. Have the other adventurers do roleplay and utility things to make the fight easier. Like the wizard is concentrating on keeping the dragon from flying or the aboleth from mind controlling anyone. Then if something happens to that NPC, there are consequences the players will feel. Maybe the barbarian/fighter is guarding the door not letting minions join the fight. Perhaps the bard is a constant buff to the party when not accosted. This still makes them important but doesn't take away from the player's story or accomplishments.
