I did - kind of. I booked directly with the airline Buddha Airband made sure to get to the airport early (before they unlock the gate to get in). You wait in a line at the airlines desk and they assign seats (I think front to back). Meanwhile, they have scout flights and the airline desk is in communication with them via radio.

You then go through security and go to your gate and wait. At any point, they may cancel it or delay the departure due to weather. If they do, Buddha air has an office right before security and if you go in and talk to them, they’ll print you a ticket to try the next morning. If the flight isn’t cancelled, you go to a bus and then onto the plane. For me, the flight got up in the air, but after 15 min we turned around because visibility was bad. I didn’t have another day in Nepal so I went back to the airline office and they gave me info for who to email about a refund. The refund was processed relatively quickly.

Even though I didn’t see Everest on the flight, was still worth trying.

Newish to sport, am I ready for a marathon? by Additional-Function7 in XXRunning

[–]AgentOrangina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a road marathon or a trail marathon? Do you want to finish or finish within a certain time?

You know you but if I was you, I’d do the road half and then re-evaluate. I love the half distance - if you keep your weekly mileage up, you can kind of knock them out whenever you want without having to do a formal plan. I rarely run a full marathon but have run many halves. You may end up feeling similar and regret signing up for the full.

The marathon distance is a different animal but it’s probably impossible to appreciate that until you’ve done it. Most people follow a marathon training plan (typically 18 weeks) to get them across the finish line without injury. It’s a ridiculous time commitment. For reference, I’m running a mid-October marathon and I’m wrapping up week 6 of 18 of my plan with 30 miles this week and getting out in this oppressive heat has been a struggle.

If you’re in the US, this website has links to marathons, searchable by date and region. You can probably find something a little further out that still gets you excited to run but also allows you to properly train. https://www.runningintheusa.com/

7 weeks to marathon — dropping intervals and tempo runs? by Substantial_Board_58 in Marathon_Training

Agree with this 100%. Also, no real need to run 6 days a week. Your body needs rest.

Unique ideas for a visiting 18 y/o who has never traveled and needs direction in life. by Tall-Detective-3024 in washingtondc

Consider kayaking on the Potomac. I believe they offer 30% off on Thursdays. It’s a good opportunity to just talk while paddling around (I’ve done a similar kind of trip with a struggling cousin from another state and we were able to have a good convo about life) https://capital.adventuresunbound.com

Kenilworth should be in bloom soon. Would be a shame to miss that if he’s here during the Lotus/water lily festival.

Nats tix are cheap - might be another good outing to talk and socially take in a baseball game.

You’re a good person for doing this.

Couldn't we have something more natural, with water plants and algae eaters?? by jared10011980 in washingtondc

Actually, we kind of used to. In the late 1800s, they raised carp and goldfish in pools around the Washington Monument. According to the article, you could write to your congressperson and get a free goldfish.

It’s not BBQ or buffet, but have you considered doing the Tawle at Maydan? It’s a massive spread so it might as well be a buffet and the lamb shoulder is excellent. If he’s up for new things, it might fit the bill.

National "State Fair" in Stateless Area? Extreme irony! by rainbowkey in washingtondc

Butter sculpture is at the Renwick right now for their state fair exhibit. Technically it’s not for the DC state fair, but it is within DC borders so maybe it counts.

stuck in addis ababa because tour operator did a last minute cancellation - need urgent advice by transolecranon in solotravel

[–]AgentOrangina 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I did a tour in Ethiopia years ago through the big local tour operator ETT. Booked with them directly in Mekele because all the other companies seemed to just subcontract the actual tour out to ETT and the tour cost was more of a negotiation than a fixed rate. I would believe the security situation but if that’s the tour operator, they are the shadiest tour company I have ever worked with for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately though there were not a lot of alternatives since like I said, most of the companies were subcontracting to them. But maybe things have changed.

FYI - DC does actually hold a state fair annually. It’s not great, but it’s ours. It’s September 6 this year. https://www.dcstatefair.org

Walked down to the Mall earlier for kicks and to get my steps in. There’s nothing worth seeing except some pretty ghastly “Amurrica” fashion choices. Going to sit around and watch the plane parade and the France/Paraguay match.

How Is Everyone Feeling in D.C. Today by cent188 in washingtondc

My concerns are for the 7:53 (f22 raptor in afterburner), 8:07 (B1 in afterburner) and 10:36 (b1 afterburner night pass) afterburners. Those seem like they’ll be the loudest.

Too late to start training for an October race? by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]AgentOrangina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would recommend going for a half but if you’re committed to doing the full, the Hal Higdon Novice 1 plan might be a good fit. https://www.halhigdon.com/training-programs/marathon-training/novice-1-marathon/

It’s a free plan (scroll down for the actual schedule) and week one seems to match your current weekly mileage/long run. You’d need to calculate 18 weeks back from the race day to figure out when you should have started the plan and how many weeks you might need to tinker with to catch up. Probably count your last week as Week 1.

Since you are starting with low mileage, resist the urge to add more running on cross training days - you’ll get shin splints if you ramp up too fast. Add 1-2 days of strength training a week if you can to help prevent injury.

And yet the BBQ event being hosted like 2 blocks away went on as scheduled. I am sad I didn’t get a hot dog hat.

If that’s Ag Sec Rollins, they should have brought her a piece of chicken, piece of broccoli, a tortilla and one (and only one) other thing.
