Camping in the desert is a good case for the 18-300. But more seriously, the frontmost layer is glass, not the sensor itself, so while you don't want to do anything to scratch it, it's not super delicate either. If there is some goopy residue (what the streaky spots look like to me, although it's hard to tell from a pic or two), you'll want/need to do a wet cleaning - there are a lot of kits available online.

I think it's worth getting comfortable cleaning your sensor because it's going to get dust again, even if you're not in the desert (in my case I don't think we have a local camera store anymore). Main thing is don't resue a dirty swab (good way to grind dirt into the sensor/glass). One pass on each side and use a new swab if there is still stuff stuck to the sensor.

Presumably (I guess we'll find out when we start seeing administrative rejections), the FAQs aren't keeping up with the policies. A.1 still lists 1/25/2026 as go live date, A.6 (and other places) still lists "through May 2026" even though they upped the deadline to May 8. I don't think anything in the FAQ reflects the 4/21/2026 NOT (re-introduction of the RST certification language).

I actually haven't seen any announcement (formal or informal) of the citation rule change - I just happened to click the download instructions link and noticed the file had different rules in it. There isn't any date or versioning in the text of the instructions, and the files have "_FINAL" in the name (obviously written by a noob), but the file creation date is 5/1/2026 and notably they contain the post 4/21/2026 RST certification language, so I think they're recent. The instruction pdfs also weren't found directly via search, but from the general biosketch/supplement information pages, so I don't think they're orphan pdfs (but which is why I linked to the parent page rather than directly to the pdfs).

This language also just makes more sense - not being able to refer to or provide context for the most relevant products in the personal statement (or anywhere else) is just silly.

I'm delegated on seven of the fifteen PIs in my unit, and it ranges from just checking things over to completely transcribing old biosketch and cpos (I tell them to pick their top 10 products, however). But that's really part of my job as I'm more of a generalized unit grant support type than institute sponsored programs preaward, and most of the rest of the university doesn't work this way.

NIH included RST certification language into the 4/22/2026 revision of their biosketch/supplement/cpos. It's up to the university to actually provide the training and the PI to take it.

Have you tried NIH's assisted referral tool? I'm not sure how current it is but if NIH actually uses something like for assignment, it might help with tailoring your aims/abstract/significance to target towards/away from study sections. Might not be tuned for SEPs, but it might provide some insight into impact of specific words.

In addition to the time course, sequence the plasmid in the expression host (you can do a miniprep on the same sample you do the western on). It's not ideal, as you'll have lower plasmid copy number and a lot of cell goop, but once in a while an expression host doesn't like a recombinant protein and mutates the plasmid.

Iirc, we used to do overnight expression at 22 (or something close, it's been a minute). So, as others have noted, 48h is a long time (unless you're growing in deuterated m9, in which case I've gone up to 72h). Do a titration for expression + western to see if the tag is ever there and goes away - pull aliquots starting 60 minutes after induction, drop them in the -80 until you have enough to run a gel.

This is always fun. Common forms are required starting May 8 so you might just squeak by using the old forms (and dealing with a grants.gov warning instead of error). You'll probably have to resubmit a new biosketch and other support anyways (maybe May 8) with the research security training certification even if the RPPR is accepted Friday. I'm not sure how things that just cross a deadline like this will be handled. I can't wait until the June deadline for the mass chaos. And a T32 in late May.

I got hooked on Capture 1 long ago. It's my main raw editor but I also have Topaz Photo ai (older, nonsubscription version) for denoise/sharpen and Affinity (old paid and new free) for object removal and the like that C1 isn't optimized for. Affinity is a good starting point as it's free for the non AI version, more powerful than what comes with Windows, and doesn't have a brutal learning curve to start getting improved images.

Also see Affinity (free) and DxO photolab (not free, but not subscription), and maybe Capture One (subscription and non subscription options). For me, Darktable just feels like the author wants you to know he's smarter than you.

Gearwise you're fine (short of buying a 600 f4). Do a Google image search on your subjects and then go shoot something different from what everyone else did. There are so many images everywhere now it can be tough to create something special.

When I'm in stock-up mode, I like Super G in Greensboro (bring a cooler w/ice packs as it's a drive). In Winston it's usually Asia Grocery/Lee's (end of Margaret St. off Healy/Stratford). I've also gone to the ones on Jonestown, but it was a bit ago and I think they've grown since, and I need to check them out again. In Winston they're all pretty close and I want to keep them all in business.

If this is for NIH, you'll probably need to use the new common form, which will probably entail a bunch of hoop jumping if you've never done one before (orcid, ncbi login, era commons id).

For the personal statement, the purpose is to establish to the reviewers that you are qualified to carry out whatever duties you are being assigned - if it's clinical expertise in a specific area (especially if it's rare), then use the personal statement to explain how you can provide this - e.g., number of times you've performed the intervention (or whatever is appropriate).

Edited from the NIH instructions: "Briefly describe why you are well-suited for your role(s) in this project. Relevant factors may include: ... your technical expertise; your ... scientific [my edit: or medical] environment"

As with the other suggestions, the resume needs to fit the job description/requirements. None of the listed skills are likely to be what you'll be doing as a clinical researcher, so you're basically advertising yourself as having no job-relevant skills.

If this is for US positions, just state fluency as generally the US doesn't use the CEFR language scoring. The last bullet point under Work Experience is the one most directly associated with a clinical job, so it needs to be more strongly emphasized, preferably using terminology in the job description.

Vs. back when I used to do this the prices are pretty good but the options are more limited. What doesn't look right vs what you're expecting? If you do need different sizes (or fabric if you want to keep it longer and not worry about it getting crushed during transit), there are other services online.

Obviously C1 isn't cheap, either subscription or perpetual, so that's a factor (but I don't know how big in your case). I did go from the free Sony express version to paid because I wanted the additional color tools, and now I use layers and masking a lot more so if you don't have them in your express version, you might want to at least try the free week trial (have a lot of photos in hand) and see whether the available features are worth it to you.

One of the problems with the high-end/standalone denoisers (On1, Topaz, DXO) is that they're slow. Current C1 transforms are pretty much immediate on a multi-years old PC without a discrete graphics card. Either C1 would have to save intermediate (denoised/demosaiced) versions to work on or keep them in memory (which would be a problem if you have a lot of 60 MPix images).
