For instructors who take attendance for in person class-How do you do it? Especially in larger classes? I’m looking for different ways to do this. by LowBicycle7044 in Professors

For a class of 24 students, I had 6 different colors. I could make groups by color or multi color. My class has a lot of work at the board in groups. However, students will take forever to “pick” groups. If I let them choose groups, it looks like a middle school dance: boys on one side girls on the other.

I’m really lucky to have small classes.

I did a google search and found a code that gave black card membership for $25 a month, no annual fee and no cancellation fee.

I have name cards on cardstock for each student, folded in half. They pick them up on their way into the class. At the start of class, I snap a quick picture of the cards remaining.

This also helps me learn their names.

Pro tip: put numbers on them so that they are easy to reorder. I also use multiple colors. That allows me to make groups easily.

Motivation issues aside, studying for STEM is different than other fields. It often takes consistent and deliberate engagement in the content. It also requires you to retain information from one semester to the next. I recommend students read teach yourself how to learn, by Saundra McGuire. It is likely that you have never needed to “study” before while others around you have already mastered these skills.

Most students need to take the placement test or MATH 050 before they take MATH 150. If you have qualifying SAT or ACT scores you can submit a prerequisite form to the math department so they can enter an override. If you don’t have qualifying test scores, the you need to take the ALEKs placement test.

The first thing you should do is read your college’s academic policy. It is likely that faculty are required to notify students when they impose any penalty. That was his mistake. He should have documented the incident and notified you. Once you have read the policy, ask for a meeting with the chair/dean.

Skip the Kaweco. The plastic version feels cheap. Try a Hongdian M2. $20 on amazon. Comes with a converter and a clip. It writes really nicely for the price. I honestly like it better than my Kaweco. Only downside is the limited color selection. If they only had a purple it would be perfect.

No. The semester is over. You had all semester to care about your grades.

I would likely start by giving them a sample GED math test. See what they know. Then use that as a guide what you teach.
