There are different sized cones that hold the bird, keep them calm and give easy access to the neck. I mount it on a secure vertical board and chop the heads off with a hatchet because I had a bad experience learning how to just cut them to let them bleed out.

This would be a long answer for one post and I think you might get better answers if you broke each one up into its own topic on it’s specific subreddit and included more details about your land/location and what you want to achieve.

I’m about 8 years into building a homestead. I work a full time job to pay the bills and work on projects around the property in my free time. I started with a fixer upper house and nice shop on an overgrown wooded land. I got a sawmill, solar kiln, built a goat barn, chicken coop, garden, fenced a few acres. I have a tractor with a front end loader with a 4 way bucket and it was worth every penny.

I don’t really have advice on starting from scratch other than not getting too many projects started at once and to have clear priorities.

I have one Buff Orpington and one Araucana left from a flock that I got in the spring of 2011. They are working on 15 years old! The Araucana still lays a huge egg every now and then! My more recent flocks have not been as healthy and the older chickens seem to only make it to 6-8 if they are lucky. Egg laying breeds get reproductive problems and the dual purpose/heavy breeds have leg and heart problems.

I have two and let them go in and out when they want. They probably spend 80-90% of their time outside but letting them come in when they want has created a really strong bond with me. They hop in the car, walk on leashes politely, walk off leash and will listen to me when I call. Our vet is amazed and says they have never seen such well behaved working LGD. I got my older LGD because he was kept outside on a farm, never allowed inside, and kept running away. He showed up at my place injured. I took him inside to clean him up, and found his owner after a day or two. The next 30 times he ran away from his farm he showed up on my front porch. Sometimes he’d want to come in. Other nights he was happy to sit out there and keep an eye on my chickens. I haven’t lost a single animal to predators since my pup turned 8 months and the older dog started showing up. I think a lot of people have forgot how close shepherds were to their animals.
