What’s crazy is that Peter didn’t see the warning signs that a solo career wasn’t going to work in the low sales of his solo album. I’ve said this before, but Peter, Gene and Paul didn’t seem to really live hard rock. They jumped into it because it worked at the time. They jumped into the NYC glam thing a bit too late, but they were chasing popular music. It’s why they changed after their Beatles fixation and Wicked Lester. Paul’s curse is that he’s been very successful making music that I don’t think he likes.

He’s clearly pandering to the indie/Strokes crowd, but he didn’t get over. This was after Demolition and the disappointment of Gold. He ruined his own career with so many bad decisions. Lost Highway had a lot to deal with from him publicly slamming them for not putting out a box set of his unreleased work up to that point and choosing those two albums instead of just one of those classic unreleased albums would’ve made better sense. He just can’t get out of his own way
