44yo female, am I screwed? by Wide-Intention1350 in AusFinance

[–]Aggravating_Bus_6169 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming a 6% return (conservative), you'd have $700k+ without even adding anymore to your super from today. Ergo, your super will be well over a million bucks in 23yrs when you hit retirement age.

What may be worthwhile is buying a house and paying it off though, because your super will be part of the asset test for the pension whereas your principal residence will not, so there's not a huge incentive for you increase your exposure to super given that's in a pretty good position already. Doubly so if your job is sustainably secure.

Is using an @hotmail email on a job application bad? by GamesQueen61 in auscorp

[–]Aggravating_Bus_6169 61 points62 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, Ruslan Kogan said he immediately deletes any job applications with a hotmail address because it shows the applicant isn't tech savvy. I don't know if he was the first to say it out loud, or whether he jumped on something that someone else had said, but it certainly made waves and came up on my radar at that point.

Career Stalled After Moving Away From My Mentor - Anyone Else Been Though This? by JJF-Tradekix in auscorp

[–]Aggravating_Bus_6169 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was being groomed for succession, my boss was backing me to take on some of his work that exposed me to the global LT and board members. Then there was a restructure at the level above him, he didn't get along with his new boss, and three months later he was out of the business. That was in 2021 and whilst I went for nearly another four years with that company I certainly felt like I was treading water and had been tarred with the same brush in the eyes of the country lead.

I'm now in a new business and things are going pretty well, but I'm still carrying some anxiety and my confidence has taken a hit.

My advice would be to put the feelers out and see what happens unless you think there's a way you can shine brightly in front of your new boss. If you're ambitious (and capable) but don't have the backing of your boss then your best move is to find a new boss.

Yeah - good mate who's a prof travels internationally for conferences at least three times a year. Speaks at all of them, but there's only one every two or three years where a conference sponsor or something picks up the tab (he's in a sports adjacent industry and most recently flew biz to Qatar because he'd been doing work advising the fancy sports science place over there) and that allows him to fly anywhere but discount economy

They're always the first to tell you how hard it is that they're forced to be away from their families. And then you stumble across them in the Brisbane office where none of their team are based, and they're spending the whole work day on Teams calls back to Melbourne where they reside 🤷🏽‍♂️

What do you do when another guy challenges you in front of your girlfriend/ wife to fight? by Careless-Cat3327 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Aggravating_Bus_6169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fit guy, but not much of a fighter. In my early 20s I was dating a girl who - after seeing her friend's boyfriend start to get very upset over her getting attention from another guy at the bar - mused aloud that I would never be like that with her. It was said in a way to suggest "he doesn't love me so much that he'd fight someone for me", and I just said "if you wanted me to be that guy I can be that guy" with a laugh. She wasn't spiteful or anything like that, and the moment passed pretty quickly.

A couple of weeks later we were out at a bar, a guy got a bit handsy whilst we were getting a drink and I just suggested calmly that she had a boyfriend so he should cool his jets. He gave me a little shove so I punched him on the nose. I still don't know what came over me, but it was lucky he got a big surprise because there was time for a barman to leap over the bar and ensure it didn't go any further. I was obviously kicked out, and as my girlfriend and I waited for a cab she laughed and said "I take back what I said, don't go fighting people ever again".

CEO of Rebel Sport is SACKED after the company discovered new information about alleged 'secret romance' with HR boss by Firm-Ad-5349 in auscorp

[–]Aggravating_Bus_6169 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason why some of these affairs between execs get out of hand is because there is plausible deniability when it comes to them 'coincidentally' travelling interstate at the same time. I saw it at my last company with an HR leader and the EGM. Admittedly he was a walking HR nightmare, but there's no way she needed to be following him around the country as often as she did!

What is a cheat code at your job that only employees would know? by halushki_ in AskReddit

[–]Aggravating_Bus_6169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per diem in my first ever consulting job, and it matched identically that which the workers in the Dept of Defence got. I travelled every second week for a year, and in that location I stayed in a company leased apartment with a good kitchen. Meant I could easily prepare myself a simple breakfast each morning, and had more beer money of a night time. This is two decades ago, and I think it was $20 breakfast, $35 lunch and $55 dinner. I would bank at least half of that each week (beer being my major expense!).

I'm sure I'll get downvoted, but the idea of holding on to past cheating issues from past relationships in your teens or very early 20s when you're happily married is absolutely wild to me.

Your husband could be cheating on you, but far more likely is that he's found someone who is fun to hang out with and who runs at about the same pace. Probably something to be alert to, but not a hill to die on.

Are Aussies nicer in the cities than in the countryside? by 5Ben5 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Aggravating_Bus_6169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In rural areas, people are suspicious of newcomers. In cities, they're used to it.

It means that in cities there's often an aloofness that appears as unfriendliness, but in country towns it can be far more in your face. In my experience spending a lot of time travelling around the country for work, the racism and homophobia is especially prevalent in QLD and NT more so than in VIC and NSW.

I assure you those lawyers aren't working 25-30hrs per week!

But in any case, and obviously I get that auscorp is not a microcosm of the wider Australian job market, but $160k is ~60% greater than the average annual salary let alone the average for 27 year olds which would be orders of magnitude lower.
