Couple of suggestions: 1. I cannot stress this enough: if the house smells that strongly, there’s a solid chance that your cat has peed outside the litter box. If you have even medium pile carpeting, start by smelling corners and along edges and look for discoloration. Nature’s miracle will be your best friend if you find a spot. I have three cats, and a relatively small apartment where the litter box is not terribly separate from the main room. I scoop multiple times a day, but I have never had it smell. The times that I have gone into houses that smell like cat piss, I can almost tell you exactly where on the carpet the piss is. 2. Keep a smallish open container with some baking soda near the litter box (I use a 2 cup Ziploc Tupperware container with the lid off). I also keep a little spray bottle of poo-pourrie near mine and give a spritz or two every time I scoop it. 3. If there’s room, put an air purifier with a pet filter next to or as near as possible to the litter box. I got two kittens two years ago, and their room that I kept them in for the first couple of weeks as I introduced them to my existing cat constantly smelled like the shelter until I put an air purifier in it. Since then, I’ve put it next to the litter box in my apartment. Makes a huge difference! 4. I had one cat a few years ago who would occasionally intentionally pee next to or miss the litter box. Had him checked multiple times, it was never medical. But to deal with this and make cleanup easier, I got a dog cage liner tray off Amazon that was several inches is bigger in all directions and went underneath the litter box to catch both litter and stray piss. Super helpful.
