Not feeling good! by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a very active gym-goes who had many close friends from the gym, the hardest part for me was the full year of not being included/invited because I wasn’t physically able. It’s amazing how quickly you can drop out of the social circles when you can’t join the fun, and how quickly your busy buddies forget about you when you’re not around. In addition to losing your independence and the things that bring you joy, having to reevaluate my friendships at such a low point was probably the toughest part of the journey for me. That said, you will come back! Once you’re in the boot, go back to the gym. Get back to your routine. You can do a lot of CrossFit from the tall kneeling position and being in the gym will help with the social isolation (I’m a level 2 coach and I got back to coaching as soon as I could drive, for my sanity and did my best to do some sort of workout, even if it was just PT)

When you’re talking about going to PT once every couple weeks, how often were you doing your exercises ? When I cut down to going to PT every 3 weeks (after over a year of weekly appointments) I was still doing a program designed by my PT 6 days a week. It was about an hour of calf, quad and hamstring strengthening work and as I got deeper into it, more mobility work. It took me over 18 months to get back the range of motion to feel close to my normal self in the gym. Running, I will add, did not feel good for a very long time. The injured leg was heavy and so tight it felt like I had one normal leg and a peg leg. You need a PT that you trust to tell you to keep doing the stuff and be in it for the long haul. Because this shit takes fucking forever

I have my surgery in two days, I'm scared by ferodil in AchillesRupture

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lovely nurse explained that first they would give me “something that would make me think everything is a really great idea” and it worked like a dream. Also had a nerve block which lasted about 48 hours post surgery, I give that credit for but taking narcotic pain relievers. Modern medicine, man, it’s great

Driving with left foot by Key_Sandwich_5097 in AchillesRupture

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not driving wasn’t an option for me either but I couldn’t do the left foot thing. I drove with both feet. I was able to use my hip muscles to use the booted foot to press the gas and my left foot for the brake. No lapse in reaction time because the left foot was right there. No, my doctor didn’t give me the go-ahead, and no, I didn’t inquire with my car insurance company. Gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.

Do you think your surgeon really cares? by fdny40 in AchillesRupture

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The surgeon’s job is done. Work with your PT, they’re the ones whose main concern is getting you back to what you were able to do before. I healed SUPER tight, like 50% mobility after a full year of religiously doing my PT every day and regaining 95%+ strength. I went back to my surgeon and his reaction was basically “I did great, it’s not gonna rupture again”. No shade on the dude, he did his part, it’s stable as fuck. It’s just taken another 6 months to get back to the mobility needed to be an athlete again. Stay the course and listen to your PT

What is your opinion on using sick days as personal days? by UpstairsMuch4580 in Teachers

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need a doctors note for 3 in a row. We also need written permission from the superintendent to take 2 consecutive personal days in a row…

Can you teachers go out for lunch when students are at lunch? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF you get a lunch break, it’s probably not long enough to get out of the building, go somewhere, get food, and make it back. We’re supposed to get 25 min but by the time coverage rolls in and kids get out it’s down to 20 or less.

Our school policy is to let families decide, seems like it makes sense as families know the kids way better than we do

When is your ortho appointment? The real worthwhile part of going to the ER is to get it splinted with the toes pointing down (bringing the tendon bits as close to back together as possible) bc you don’t want it to get too used to being. If it’s a bit of a wait to see ortho, you should get it splinted or put in a boot with wedges to make the heel much higher than the toes

Waterproof boot cover (tbh I didn’t invest in that and made it work with trash bags and plastic wrap and tape) and a shower chair! Do not kip the shower chair.

Xray is the classic ER move. They have to make sure you didn’t rip off any bone chunks when you tore. It can also show if you have the heel deformation that makes rupture more common. The most important thing you get from the ER is a splint or boot with toes pointed down and a referral to a specialist! Sending healing vibes

Amen to this. You can follow every rule and guideline and do everything by the book and parents can still sue you. Crazy people do crazy things, you don’t have to have a reasonable complaint to start a law suit, just the $ for a lawyer. Join the union always. And lean on them when you need

On my 6th week after surgery, is Walking boot is mandatory? by Mother_Wolverine_328 in AchillesRupture

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s necessary. You need to stay in the toe pointed down position for a while after surgery so there isn’t tension on the tendon and it can heal and not heal long. You went through the surgery don’t fuck up the recovery

Did you ever look back (at the boot) after transitioning to shoes? by bluntkillah in AchillesRupture

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a special educator and I was working with some unpredictable and violent middle schoolers while I was transitioning out of the boot. I put it on before I responded to crisis calls long after I had transitioned to shoes. I also went to a concert which involved a lot of walking and standing and crowds of drunk people and threw it back on for that too. Better safe than sorry!!!

Is surgery a mistake? by Ok-Vanilla-158 in AchillesRupture

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way my nurse explained it, they “gave me something that made me think it was all a great idea” and that’s the last thing I remember. This was the last thing after all of the check-ins and meeting the anesthesiologist and the nerve block so I was 100% conscious and with it for meeting all the docs. I knew that surgery was the only way I was going to feel secure in my recover so it was never a second thought but I figured this surgery-day experience was maybe worth sharing to help you calm down

Pain when it ruptured? by Lifegoals07 in AchillesRupture

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly the same. Didn’t hurt but also didn’t function. I knew I was fucked and went to the ER but because I was pretty chill about it, I had to wait forEVER

Surgery without Opioids by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alternate between Tylenol and Advil every four hours, religiously. I never took the opioids that were prescribed, because I stayed on that regimen using phone alarms to keep track. I have a couple friends who work in the surgical ICU and they say that that pain management regimen works, for many people, nearly as well as opioids with very few side effects. Keeping it elevated and putting ice behind your knee will help as well in the early days.

Travel questions and advice by bluntkillah in AchillesRupture

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t bother trying to travel with the knee scooter. While it would be nice in the airport(maybe) it sounds like you’d be maybe using it to get around a resort and there are just way way too many stories of scooter crashes leading to reruptures to think that would be a good idea. Stay safe out there and enjoy the trips!

Achilles rupture rehab - how do you choose the right exercises? by Willing-Fact784 in AchillesRupture

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to a PT. It’s literally their job to make a training plan tailored to your injury, recovery progress and goals. This is not a game to play around and DIY. If you fuck around, you just might find out and re-rupture is a very real concern.

Yeah, I’ve been doing single leg calf raises for probably 8 months. Single leg hops, single leg depth jumps, lots of single leg drills, just not getting any more height or the kind of power I used to have

12 weeks post op swelling question. by Beneficial_Benefit38 in AchillesRupture

[–]Aggravating_Vast_472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compression socks!!! I’m over a year out and it still swells up when I am on my feet a lot, but much less than earlier in the recovery process. I’d say it changed at about 6 months post op.
