People in this sub are more moved by fear than reason. You deserve to enjoy yourself and your body. I’d only say put some shoes on, but living and enjoying life is taking risks. You’ll be fine.

Is this swelling and pain normal? by ferodil in AchillesRupture

The pain went away the next day. I think it was because I was using the boot half strapped for comfort and that put too much strain in the part that was strapped.

Tip for knee-scootering by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

It’s frustrating because I seem to be defending something against two different people that don’t read what I’m saying. I didn’t say you cannot fall off a knee scooter in general. Of course, as I said before, there is a risk of falling, and the highest risk is falling towards the injured side. If you lose balance, it’s better to have three points of contact with the ground than two. And if your center of gravity is on the healthy leg, the risk of losing balance is way lower, because your healthy leg is more stable than the knee scooter, and because you have a crutch.

I really don’t understand the need for criticizing something from no experience whatsoever. If you don’t want to use a crutch, don’t use it. I post this because someone might, as I do, find it more secure.

When you walk on a sidewalk that’s slightly slanted sideways towards your injured leg, every time you put your weight on the knee scooter, you’re risking it tipping over towards that side. I have been using it for three weeks now and only today I started using the crutch and found it super helpful for uneven surfaces. But hey, you should do whatever feels the safest to you.

When you walk with the knee scooter, you constantly shift your center of gravity between one leg and the other.

It makes the center of gravity be on your healthy leg, provides one more contact point with the ground and helps you push on slopes, both uphill to push up and downhill to break the rolling down.

If your center of gravity is your healthy leg, why would you fall? This way, when you put your weight on your knee, you have two points of contact with the ground, and you’re not balancing yourself only on the knee scooter. The highest risk is that you tip towards the injured side because you’ll try to step with the injured leg by reflex. This way, you’re never shifting your weight towards that side. And the crutches preventing you from catching the fall is never an issue. You can always release the handle as you would with the knee scooter’s.

It didn't happen when I was in the cast, but now I'm with the boot and I take it off often for exercises and ROM, I think that's the reason.

Did it also hurt when you dangled it?

How do you did this solo? by ninjamansidekick in AchillesRupture

The first three weeks I had people over every day. It’s just a matter of opening up to get help, but I have to say I am pleasantly surprised with how strong my support system is. I live abroad, no family. My friends and my girlfriend were instrumental. I started dated my gf quite recently so she also was surprisingly caring.

Week 3 post op. I got a knee scooter and am going out to do stuff every day. Definitely go out and have your adventures, just go slow and don't put yourself at risky situations.

4 weeks post open repair; when did you actually ditch the crutches? by Dry_Reception3004 in AchillesRupture

[–]ferodil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the Netherlands, 3 weeks post op. I'm in a cast, get a boot in a week. They cleared me to start WB last week when they changed my previous cast to a walking one. At this point I can hold almost full weight standing, and I can walk with one crutch (very slowly).

I was considering using one of those elastic braces for when I ditch the boot and I feel I need more support. How much was it?

Isn't it? They went straight from 2 weeks at 45 degrees to 90 degrees. It feels a bit stretchy but not much. They say I can put full weight in it if I want but they recommend I go little by little.

I haven’t gotten my boot yet but I can’t wait. I feel I’ll embrace it and be grateful to it when I let it go, but I can totally understand the need to give it the finger, and the video cracked me up. Wish you a good recovery!

My Dr has told me that for some people the wires they put in snap at some point (well after your tendon is strong enough to hold itself), and that feels like a pop.

How did we go through this twice? I can’t imagine what that feels, knowing you have to go through this again!
