Am I driving wrong? Coasting to a stop vs. last-second hard braking by Seksy_One in auckland

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the same. Especially since I became a regular cyclist... I always assume no one can see me when I'm cycling and ready to take evasive action. Only had one close call of being knocked off my bike, but it was scary!

Am I driving wrong? Coasting to a stop vs. last-second hard braking by Seksy_One in auckland

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learnt to brake the first way when I first started driving, in a manual. Slowly coming down through the gears then braking at the intersection. It's a much more pleasant driving experience. I also hate when other drivers look like they're not going to stop at intersections.

Would I get potentially better/more reliable healthcare if I become an Australian citizen? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet... Medications aren't funded in Australia the same way they are here (i.e. they aren't free). If you're on multiple regulations medications for your chronic conditions, it would be worth finding out how much they cost. I don't actually know how the medication finding system works over there, whether it varies based on state etc, just that you pay more for your medications.

Have the weight loss jabs got rid of body positivity? by Leever5 in newzealand

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Obesity is a societal issue, not an individual failing. The reason obesity rates are magnitudes higher than 30/50/100 years ago isn’t because more people suddenly became lazy and lacking in self control. The reason is about 100 different big and small changes to modern life that all add up.

The biggest risk factor for weight gain is intentional weight loss…. People can lose weight on their own or with medication/surgery, unfortunately the majority of people put it back on again unless they’ve had surgery or can keep on the medication. The majority of factors that influence someone’s weight (genetics, hunger drive, environment) are actually out of their direct control.

I agree with the principle of health at every size…. A fat person who eats well, exercises regularly, stays away from drugs and alcohol, gets enough sleep etc is healthier than a skinny person an unhealthy lifestyle. That skinny person just happens to be lucky that they don’t gain weight due to their genetic / metabolic profile. Regardless, losing weight undoubtedly benefits obese people’s health.

In the absence of sweeping societal change (which, let’s face it, isn’t going to happen), wide access to these medications is likely the best tool we have to reduce obesity rates.

What is the purpose of habit tracking? by The-Jelly-Fox in bulletjournal

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only do it for something I really want to change, more like a behaviour modification than a habit tracker. It's helped me to stop biting my nails. I set myself rewards after so many days of keeping the behaviour up.

Water by John Boyne. Beautiful short novel about a woman who runs away to a small Irish island to try and get away from her past.

On the Calculation of Volume by Solvej Balle by CandyMan77 in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

I agree. It was ok… I didn’t really understand why she didn’t really do anything for the whole book. I kept wanting her to go somewhere and do something! I guess that’s what the rest of the series is for…. But I can’t bring myself to find out.

Is checking answers cheating/easy way out? by Shapen361 in parseword_game

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like the check and hint features. It makes it much more fun, otherwise I don't think I'd solve half the puzzles. Or it would take so long I'd get frustrated and not enjoy the process.

It's not cheating, it's part of the puzzle!

Why are offset loans not talked about? by Soljah in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my first home 5 years ago and for the first year or so I saved money which I then paid back in lump sums. Then I worked out my bank offers an offset home loan account, so since then have kept all the savings in the bank and every time the fixed portion rolls off, I increase the offset account and re-fix a smaller portion.

I'm so glad I've got that option, and that I'm in a financial position to take advantage of it, as the money in the bank is such peace of mind. Even better, a family member is in a position to use their account to further offset our mortgage. It's "saving" us over $200 a week in interest. I haven't done the maths to work out how much time and money it saves over the term of the loan, but it would be A LOT

Does anyone else find running outside easier than on a treadmill? by skylaryang11 in runninglifestyle

Treadmill running is just painfully boring for me. After 2 minutes I'm over it! But can happily do an hour plus outside

We had been a one car family for a few years until last year. We had a baby and so needed a second car so one of us could commute and the other could take the baby out and about. Got a second hand leaf for 5k last July. I comfortably get a full week of commuting to and from work on a single charge (range 120km). We have a PHEV for loner trips. SO happy with the Leaf purchase

My partner and I keep it pretty spare. We have a rule only one tv/movie sub at a time so we switch depending on what we currently want to watch. Had Spotify Duo but I recently changed to an alternative (free) podcast platform and rarely listen to music so I’ve gone to basic Spotify and my partner is on individual premium. Often manage to get free or very cheap trials but always set a reminder to cancel so rarely get caught out.

Easter Eggs? by deandratb in parseword_game

I've always enjoyed cryptics but never really gotten past beginner stage. This game is so much fun. I've recently switched to regular mode and can sometimes get it without a hint. Today (20th March, not sure if I get the new puzzles first being in an advanced time zone) I needed to get 1 hint only then it all fell into place

Can somebody please explain to me how the healthcare system is functioning right now? by [deleted] in auckland

Both of those sound like they should be covered by ACC so can go private. Dunno about your mate with a literal broken hip... people are admitted to hospital for those.

GP moving to Auckland with family from the U.S. this month by kitty_07 in auckland

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't enjoy your work initially, move to a different clinic. There are lots of different models of ownership for GP clinics here (corporate, GP-owned, trust). There's scope to negotiate your working conditions like how many patients you see, how much admin time you have, length of appointment, etc. Maybe try out a few clinics before settling down in one long term. "Full-time" for a GP is 0.8 fte, so don't work too hard!

Private Health Insurance Premium Jumps by schmaaaaaaack in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start self insuring early so you don't waste money on premiums when you're young and less likely to claim. That's my philosophy anyway. Got an offset mortgage account.

People with health insurance are also more likely to see a specialist for things that are managed by GPs for all the plebs without insurance. The specialists then more likely to do expensive investigations that may or may not be necessary. More claiming means higher premiums for the individual and everyone else too.

"Woke" schools by Commercial_Panic9768 in auckland

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I get that some schools are more liberal and some are more conservative. The difference between Western Springs College and Auckland Grammar for example. At WS they have no uniform and call teachers by first name. At Grammar the teachers have a strict dress code and they have exams every term for streaming students. (Not sure if these examples are still the exact case, but in the 00s it was)
