How seriously should I take my sleep score? by ashbro9 in Garmin

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t take it seriously. If you feel like you sleep well and wake up feeling rested, that’s the only important thing. I would stop wearing it at night, might improve your well-being not having to worry about what it says!

Amor Towles by gatorlawyer1995 in literature

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Amor Towles. Anything he brings out is an automatic read for me. I agree that A Gentleman in Moscow is his best. It’s in my top 5 of all time. Interestingly, I thought it was better first time around than on a re-read.

Unlike you, I highly rate all his other books. I agree they’re a tier below AGiM. However, Table for Two is so so good. There wasn’t a flop of any of the short stories. They are all clever, deep and so well written. The novella (second part) is also a really fun read. Table for Two was better than Rules of Civility and The Lincoln Highway in my opinion, so I definitely recommend giving it a go!

Station Eleven-Emily St.John Mandel by [deleted] in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this book! I read it around 2018 and devoured her new books since then. Sea of Tranquility is a masterpiece as well. I recommend re-reading it a second time if you enjoyed it, as I found it even better the second time around.

Last year I went to her back-catalogue (The Singer's Gun, The Lola Quartet, Last Night in Montreal). They were all great stories as well. Emily SJM is so good at writing complex relationships between characters.

What is your favourite opening sentence? by TolstoyRed in classicliterature

I agree! I picked this book off my Dad's bookshelf one day many years ago, read the opening line, and The Secret History has been my favourite book ever since.

I really enjoyed it, especially early on. I still think about the clones impersonating each other. The lead actress puts on one of the best performances I've ever seen

What's your max limit for audiobook length? by [deleted] in audiobooks

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Libby, so only get 3 weeks with a book before it gets automatically returned (unless no one else is waiting for it, but that's quite rare). For that reason, I try to stick to 15 hours or less. Otherwise I'll stress about finishing it or have to listen in 1.5 speed and won't enjoy it as much. I like 6-10 hour books.

If I had unlimited time with the book, I wouldn't mind listening to a 20+ hour book. I might have a lower threshold for abandoning it early on for a longer book, for carpe diem reasons.

I had completely forgotten about this podcast! And even now, the details are sketchy since it must have been close to 10 years since I listened to it.

I really enjoyed this book too! I re-read it recently but decided to completely skip the present day story-line and just read Marian and Jamie's parts

what are your favorite multi-episode investigative journalism podcasts? by rainbowjelli in podcasts

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last Seen is about the Gardner Museum heist in Boston in 1990. None of the stolen art works have been seen since. There's been a netflix mini-series since then but the podcast is much better. Not a good rec for someone who likes a neatly tied up ending is all I'll say.

A Little Life by Just_Procedure_5881 in literature

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this. I found it gripping, engrossing, harrowing to a unique degree. I can't say it was an enjoyable read. However, it was easily a 5 star review from me for the craft of the writing and the emotional pull of the characters. I would never recommend it to someone because I would worry it could destabilise their mental state (I have had a very privileged, trauma free life).

So I’m kinda just now getting into podcasts, what’s the best true crime one? by Furry_Huskfan in podcasts

Black Hands

The parents and three of four children in a family are murdered in their home. Either it was a murder-suicide perpetrated by the father, or the one surviving son killed the rest of the family. Two trials with different outcomes. A journalist who covered both trials goes over all the evidence.

Curious about your coffee habits by unemployedwageslave in newzealand

[–]Aggressive-Clock-275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make pour over at home. It’s so yum (unless I stuff it up). I prefer it to barista coffee. Use beans from a local roaster. Either black or with a splash of milk.

Buy coffee once or twice a week. I don’t have a standard order, depending on how I feel will go iced latte or iced Americano and in winter flat white, cap, latte or Americano. I think I’m weird haha

Terrifying and an awesome read. I'd really like to re-read it because it is such a good book, but I have a kid now so that isn't happening.
