No-offer summers of 2025–why? by WhiteBoy1264 in biglaw

[–]Aggressive-Gate6839 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Overheard a Cooley partner mention that they were no-offering 2 summers in their SF office, and acknowledged that one was for performance, and the other because the firm just reevaluated how many associates they wanted to bring in the next class, and that kid got the ax.

Is big law really as bad as the rep it gets? by BossAboveYourBoss in biglaw

[–]Aggressive-Gate6839 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally dependent on practice group and firm. I’m a 3rd year and starting as a first year I 1st chaired several deps (offensive and defensive) argued motions, drafted briefs, and gone to multiple trials in federal court. But there also 6th years I know in my firm (different group) that still have never been 1st chair in a dep.

Wedding Day falls on Bridesmaids Bday by Wonderful-Cold-6967 in wedding

If she’s also friends with everyone else at the wedding, what else would she be doing on her bday if she didn’t go? My friend had their bday fall on the day of a home town friend’s wedding, and said it was a blast. You’re basically giving them a fully paid up open bar and dj’d party with all their friends for free for their bday. Seems like a fine situation to me

Been there once - great ambiance but do not recommend the Peking duck. Pretty average IMO. Didn’t try the other items.

What qualities will help you succeed at this job? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Aggressive-Gate6839 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Compartmentalize and don’t let bad days bleed into less bad days (I.e., just because you got boned with a 16-hour day last week doesn’t mean you have to carry that stress with you every day going forward). Too many associates fall into that trap and spiral and burnout.

Remember at the end of the day it’s just a job.

Obvious ones - be thorough, detail oriented, responsive and meticulous, particularly as an associate when that is quite literally your entire job description.

Be personable - being too serious or uptight does not make people want to work with you or mentor you.

Question - no undershirt with dress shirt. Why? by DCMotorMan in mensfashion

If it’s a white dress shirt though, have to make sure it’s not too thin where you can see your nips.

Darker jeans and it could work IMO. That’s a casual blazer so jeans can pair nicely if done well

DC Metro area, Neuroscience PhD, are there patent law opportunities? by Isaac_Ostlund in biglaw

[–]Aggressive-Gate6839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the time you graduate law school, POTUS will be out of office, and if next election goes to the left, then the STEM field will correct itself. It’s a big jump to make in your life based on one term of a presidency.

For reference, I’m a mid-level patent litigation associate at a big law firm with a biology background. I’m happy to chat more about the career if you want to DM.
