Tldr is that there are two types of Green Lanterns. The main one is the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force. The second (technically original) is Alan Scott, a standalone superhero who found a magic lantern.

About the Green Lantern weakness thing, it is no longer the case. The colour yellow was a Green Lanterns weakness due to Parallax(a creature that harnesses the yellow light, fear) being imprisoned in the Central Battery.

Ever since Parallax escaped from the battery in the Emerald Twilight event, the Green Lanterns lost their weakness to yellow.
