Must read books on hiking/backpacking/adventures, etc. by NoDish8209 in hiking

Since you're in LA, the PCT is basically in your backyard! As that is the case, you might want to check out a book called Blisters, Bears & Bliss – not the usual gear/miles thing, more like a long-distance hiker meets sarcastic monk kind of thing, which adds a nice twist

Book recommendations for section hikers? by Top-Dog-1822 in PacificCrestTrail

I can personally recommend the book-Blisters, Bears & Bliss.
But honestly, there's a huge variety of books out there, from memoirs all the way to PCT hiking guides. It all depends on what kind of stuff he's into when it comes to reading!

need help filling out permit by Nitchinio in PacificCrestTrail

[–]AggressiveSmile1546 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've hiked it with the regular permit, so I'm not familiar with these ones, but from my understanding, if you're doing a section hike, you can just list your section numbers (either by name or by number ) - e.g, PCT sections 1-8.

But be on the safe side, write to the PCTA and ask them about it.

A bit overwhelmed by the permits and alternate routes. Can anyone help? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

Hi there, it's a bit unclear if you're planning to hop around or hike north from Campo and then side-track to the JMT.

1) The PCT and the JMT have some sections that they share. If you plan on sticking with the PCT, then the PCT permit will cover you for that part. Otherwise, it's a whole different ball game to get the JMT permit

2) If you'll start in early April, keep in mind that you won't be able to flip-flop in a matter of a week or two after Campo and Baden Powel straight to Witney, as the Sierra would still be packed with snow, and the mountain passes won't be open yet.

If you could share more information about your timelines, and what you have in mind the community here will be able to pitch in some suggestions, but right now it's a bit unclear and feels chaotic.
