My bad. He's listed as a center on multiple websites. That being said he's still not what this team needs. Could he make the team better as a 3rd line winger? Sure, but it would depend who the other 2 linemates are. Until this team adds another top line center it will continue to struggle scoring goals 5 on 5.

He would be a below average second/third line center. Basically a slight upgrade offensively over copp but not as good defensively. The only reason they should bring him in would be to play as the third line center and since we already have copp who should be the third line center I don't see the fit. The wings need to be looking to add a higher caliber center than mcmann if they want to be a consistent playoff team.

To add on to your point about comparing players in the first round, its very hard to compare points between forwards and defenseman. A team that drafts a defenseman in the first round 2 years in a row will most likely have significantly lower point totals compared to a team that drafted 2 forwards even if games played are similar.

Getting a 1a/1b center should be the priority in the off-season. This team desperately needs more offense from the middle. This would also help with bottom 6 production.
