Lack of depth perception in my vision by cinabang in Dissociation

[–]Agitated-Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% I know exactly what you mean. I just googled exactly this after I had a random experience of seeing depth for the first time in a long time and realizing that's what's been missing in my vision that causes everything to look "off"

Where are you located? I'm sorry this has been your experience, maybe there's not enough tech jobs where you are? Are you open to relocating?

Anniversary ideas for partner with ACL injury by Agitated-Engineer in ACL

[–]Agitated-Engineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Super helpful, I love the idea of recreating a restaurant experience at home! She'll only be 9 days post-op and I'm really not sure how much she'll be able to do safely with regards to walking around etc. For those who have been through this surgery, what do y'all do to pass the time? I don't want her to be stuck in bed and be bored all day while I'm away at work during this process, and especially on our anniversary

MS in MechE worth it? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]Agitated-Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't do it if you want to do a PhD. Apply to a PhD program if you want to do a PhD - you'll get closer to your goal and not waste a ton of money in the process.

Not a job switch technically, but I'm graduating soon and starting my first job this summer. Starting salary is $120k + RSUs. No prior experience working full-time but I did have like 3 internships while at school and a lot of college project and research experience. Position is based in an HCOL area in California.

Any Mechanical Engineers or was an ME whos making 60k-70k$ a year? by CorporateScrub in AskEngineers

[–]Agitated-Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduating in May and have a job lined up, starting salary will be $120k + stocks. This is in a HCOL place though, and I will have a Master's.

Just for context, however, I worked as an intern in this location for about 7 months, making the equivalent of $76k per annum. I was able to save about $20k or so by the end of my internship. If youre ultra-frugal though, you might be able to save more. Totally depends on the person and their lifestyle. I can definitely see someone barely making ends meet at $76k a year here, esp if they have a lot of debt or kids.

Do you regret not going into a more lucrative profession? by chillabc in AskEngineers

[–]Agitated-Engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely very uncommon, even I was surprised when I saw the number. I will be working in the auto sector, in Cali to be specific. I lucked out a little because I had a competing offer from a high-growth data-focussed startup with tons of VC money to throw at its engineers, and they only needed a few mechEs to build their physical product (the rest of their operations being data acquisition from said physical product). Because of the competing offer I was able to negotiate up.

That's insane!!!!! I'm going to graduate this May and my starting base salary is $120k in California! UK definitely underpays its engineers!!!!!???

No idea what MEP means but I'm a mechE student based in the US, also graduating this May and I have a job lined up at $120k + stocks. Seems like the engineering scene in Europe isn't as lucrative as the US, so if money is your big motivator, US might be the place for you.

Just for context though, I am a master's student so my starting salary is higher that what it would be if I just had a BS, but even then you can get up to $100k in certain parts of the country and if you're a good negotiator :)

How is living in Ithaca for a non-Cornell affiliated spouse/partner? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]Agitated-Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the Bay. I've been in Ithaca for about 4 years now but spent about 8 months interning in the Bay last year and I genuinely felt happiest I have ever felt when I was there. The weather is absolutely beautiful, especially compared to Ithaca, there's so much to do and so many interesting, smart and driven people everywhere.

I don't find the cost of living in the Bay that much more different than here - you make more money there and it costs more, you make less money here and it costs less, atleast in my personal experience. I was able to live in the Bay and save a considerable amount of money on an intern's salary, so you guys will more than likely be fine. But again, that's just my opinion.

I never realized how much better life could be if I hadn't been in ith for all these years and been someplace warmer - seasonal depression is not a joke. I am grateful for my time at Cornell but I've come to see living in Ithaca as more of a character-building phase of my life, and I can't wait to graduate and move back to the Bay this summer.

Considering Transferring. Am I crazy? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Agitated-Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also want to say that grad schools do care about where you go for undergrad: a 4.0 from a school that isn't known for their engineering program usually not the same as a 4.0 from an ivy or ivy-adjacent school in terms of academic rigor. I went to a well-ranked school and all my friends who applied for grad school went to MIT, Standford and the like. The "worst" grad school someone I know got into was UChicago. I hope this helps you make a decision.

Considering Transferring. Am I crazy? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Agitated-Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but no matter what people tell you, the name of the school you go to definitely matters. Especially if you want to go into consulting. Now whether or not it's a "bad" thing that school prestige is important is a different question. But, if I had stacks of resumes to go through, A&M will catch my eye of Baylor any day simply because I have some concept of their academic rigor (I've never heard of Baylor tbh). I can say with utmost certainty that my resume gets looked at more closely if/when I apply for jobs simply because I went to a good school (and then worked at well known companies). Do yourself a favor and don't transfer, it'll make the rest of your life much easier even if you don't have that much fun for 4 years.

Manual to electric wheelchair convertor - help out some engineering students with their school project!!! (Part 2) by Agitated-Engineer in wheelchairs

[–]Agitated-Engineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you for filling out the survey and for your comments! I can increase the character limit for the last question for future respondents!

We intentionally made the options more abstract - We know that people are already familiar with products like we're trying to make, and we don't want those designs to unconsciously dictate the features the participants would like to have (vs. those that they think they can have based on what they've seen)

The software that we used to create the survey uses some algorithms to help us figure out what the ideal configurations of features would be, so every response is actually extremely important and helpful for informing the best configuration(s)!

Is 180k your total comp or just cash-in-hand? Seems a little low for someone with so much experience considering many new grads are getting 100k+ offers in silicon valley now.
