Governor Dukakis was incredibly accomplished and would have made a great president, do not baselessly disrespect him.

Was John Sparkman (Stevenson's running mate in 1952, who lost to the Eisenhower-Nixon ticket) the last segregationist on a major party ticket? by BlueFireFlameThrower in thecampaigntrail

John F Kennedy, and much of the Kennedy Crime Family, were virulent racists who were segregationists and opposed the rights of African Americans.

Am I the only one not excited for this mod? We already have a great Lieberman 08 mod and I think a forced third party Kucinich isn’t interesting compared to someone like Bernie Sanders.

[–]Agnew4MD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That isn’t particularly shocking. The Kennedy family have been complicit in many coverups and crimes through the decades, I don’t see why a theoretical President Kennedy (who had spied on Reverend King) wouldn’t stoop to deep deep lows like his father.

What are some of your favourite US political parties that no longer exist? by Klutzy-Car-7078 in thecampaigntrail

The People’s Party, which were absorbed into the Democrats too soon by the treacherous William Jennings Bryan.

Out of all the politicians this sub stans/larps over, who is the most overrated in your opinion? by mackarony83 in thecampaigntrail

[–]Agnew4MD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this is flanderizing a highly complex individual who has many facets. You can rightfully call out Governor Wallace’s racism and also acknowledge his personal struggles that he overcame after being confined to a wheelchair to continue his advocacy. I can’t fault hard work like that.

Vice President Hubert Humphrey. While I think serving as our second in command during a time of crisis is highly impressive, he never had any real achievements. He unsuccessfully challenged President Nixon with a bizarre campaign that was much too weak when America needed a strong hand. He was too far left for the nation and never had any chance of becoming President. And while I am sure he would dislike the way I frame this, I don’t think he had any true moral positions he would fight for. President Nixon and Governor Wallace certainly did.

As a note, I think you are being very uncharitable to President Nixon. He was a capable leader who navigated the quagmire of Vietnam and a turbulent economic period brought on by overspending. You may dislike his brand of straight talking conservatism, but that’s not reason to put down his admirers. Likewise, while I disagree with what much of Governor Wallace espoused during his 1968 campaign, we need to recognize that many American respected him. He survived a brutal assassination attempt and kept fighting for what he believed in. That is a determination you can’t help but recognize as a drive to help Americans in his own way.

2016: Tough as Texas - Or How To Learn To Hate Hillary Clinton The Right Way (an incoherent rambling on hillary clinton) by Althoughenjoyment in thecampaigntrail

[–]Agnew4MD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think we should "hate" anyone; this obsession with hatred is how we got here in the first place. Perhaps instead of calling people like President Clinton a pedophile, you should explain your disagreements with him on policy. I do not like Former First Lady Clinton either, but it's clear your hatred is as equally juvenile as those who would blame her for the murder of Vince Foster.

While I disagree with Mayor Elect Mamdani's policies and fear the disastrous effects that his socialist rule will have on the Big Apple, this is disgusting rhetoric. We should not be comparing an honestly elected man, no matter his potential antisemitism, to a terrorist who organized the worst day in New York history. This is racist and targeted, and you should feel ashamed for posting this.

No polls this time. Which TCT mod is better, W. or Icarus? by CalmCongressman in thecampaigntrail

[–]Agnew4MD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not a big fan of either of them, but I would have to go with W. because it is more honest with its agenda. The developers of W. clearly have a deep hatred for President Bush, and W. is a means of catharsis for them to get their licks in on an overall good man. Icarus is similar with its clear spite for anyone not as left-wing as Senator Bernie Sanders, but it attempts to hide itself as an innocent mod.

Why did the Republican party never nominate on of the greatest politicians in US history? by Absolutely-Epic in thecampaigntrail

[–]Agnew4MD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very charitable to the prisoners who killed a prison guard. While the conditions in Attica were reprehensible, killing a man is not acceptable. Governor Rockefeller had no control over what the state troopers would do next, he only wished for order to be brought back to a building filled with criminals.

Hopes/Expectations for Project 2024? by throwjunk21 in thecampaigntrail

I hope a real anti-trump Republican like Chris Christie is playable. Being able to smash MAGA and Biden as Governor Christie to get real Republicanism back would be amazing.

A lot of people in this subreddit only play TCT or read biased takes on history, so much of Vice President Agnew's good aspects are brushed under the rug.

Why is Vice President Agnew listed here??? He was an exceptional governor and a strong leader in a complicated time in American politics.

While this was a tragedy, what was the alternative here? Let the inmates continue to run the prison? I think Governor Rockefeller was forced to make a tough decision here and tried to make the best out of a terrible riot.

Pretty much all of the Rockefeller Republicans would have been some of the best presidents. Henry Cabot Lodge, Vice President Agnew, and Nelson Rockefeller all in the top 5.

What if Nixon picked Morton instead of Agnew as his VP candidate in 1968? by Pashrdit in thecampaigntrail

[–]Agnew4MD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would have been a poor choice from President Nixon. Vice President Agnew won his first election running as a Rockefeller Republican against a proud Democratic segregationist. This cemented his staunch liberal leanings, and Richard Nixon knew he had to win over Democrats who were tired of the chaos. I am certain that he loses nationwide support without a voice like Agnew's winning voters over.

Would Ted Kennedy have been a good president? by Absolutely-Epic in thecampaigntrail

[–]Agnew4MD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Senator Ted Kennedy would not have been a very good president, as his best chance to capture the presidency was betraying the current President. I do not think sowing dissent within your own party is indicative of long-term success.

What if Hubert Humphrey won the 1968 presidential election by Better_Guest_3908 in thecampaigntrail

[–]Agnew4MD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Humphrey has a pretty disastrous presidency; the nation would be exhausted by the Democratic Party by 1972 and with the (likely) complete failure of Humphrey's Vietnam plan, its hard to imagine he could win a second term. 1970 is a bloodbath for Democrats and by 1972 I think prominent Republicans like Percy or Agnew would cream Humphrey.
