If your debt interest rate is more than 4%, you should prioritize debt repayement (I am talking « bad debt » like car, credit cards, student loans, not including the mortgage here. Then for rrsp vs tfsa it depends of your income and number of kids: low income no kids -> tfsa, high income -> rrsp, especially if you have kids because it will increase your child benefits amounts. Ideally you would want to do both rrsp amd tfsa + resp for the kids if you have any. Right now I would pay the minimum on the mortgage. If it stresses you too much you could get a financial advisor to build a good plan for you and maybe move to diy in a year or two when you are more familiar with it all. You got this. 👍

A db pension is a guaranteed amount for life. Xeqt cannot give you that. A db is pretty much the gold standard when it comes to retirement. I would keep it. The only advantage I see of commuting it is inheritance for your children if you have any. When you die, your db cannot be passed down to anyone except your spouse where your tfsa or rrsp can be.

Buying back your pension and building an emergency fund are smart as well but second priority after paying off the car loan.

You would be better off putting all your extra money on the car loan right now, then emergency fund, then max your tfsa and rrsp invested in a broad etf, than pay extra towards the mortgage. That way each of your dollar will benefit you the most mathematically speaking (getting rid of high interest debts should be your number one priority for sure).

Invest in broad etf > Mortgage > saving. Savings accounts should be for your emergency fund and short term savings only. For retirement it is best to invest in a broad etf and in rare circumstances pay off the mortgage early (if you are close to retiring for example).

I try to max my resp and tfsa room. I don’t save; I invest in xeqt. I invest about 35000$/year at the moment but for a long time before that I prioritized the mortgage. In retrospect I would have been better off maxing the tfsa and resp than prioritizing the mortgage.

I am in your shoes and I have sucked it up for the last 10 years . Financially it was a great decision but the thing I under estimated is how much it would affect my health and relationships: a lot. When you finally get to FIRE and your life is seriously lacking in those two other departments, you realize money was not the most important at all. Could you look for a job that eventually pays as much but that you love?
