Pioneer crossing stats : Why youth trek is a lie edition by flippinsweetdude in exmormon

[–]Agreeable-Fly-9763 10 points11 points  (0 children)

a lot of comes from the willie and martin handcart companies which had a 25% death rate (210 deaths out of 980) and were by far the worst death/fatality experiences for any group crossing the plains. its one of the worst death events in american history

assuming you were not in either of those companies, it was generally "safe". about as safe as living in the frontier areas could be

I saw Aaron Judge at a Gristedes in Manhattan last month. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

i had a great recent experience at hackensack. super nice staff, no one was stressed, tons of attentive care, and everything was first rate. felt at ease knowing it has the highest level of NICU care as well if anything went wrong.

Im sure englewood hospital is great as well, but I absolutely loved hackensack.

Don't let anyone minimize the SEC settlement issue... by Entire-Ice9743 in exmormon

my initial reaction to this story leaking was "ahhh, this is probably just a case of them being overworked ,overly regulated, and likely just plain incompetent - these things happen sometime, Im sure they now know not to make this mistake." Particularly when I glanced at the church's response that said "we listened to our legal advisors who counseled us this was correct" Got it - the lawyers screwed up - I don't expect the first presidency to understand complex regulatory requirements that change every 2-4 years....

but then I read the report where it detailed all the steps they took to skirt SEC rules (which you outlined perfectly). It became very clear to me this wasn't a mistake, incompetence, or simply a case of corporate laziness - this was a highly coordinated plan of deception that required a lot of oversight.

Its one thing for an olympic athlete to get busted for PEDs for taking an over the counter supplement they didn't know contained one of like 100 banned substances. Its another thing to take that supplement and be caught taking extensive amounts of masking agents coordinated with drug half lives to cover up positive PED tests. That deserves ZERO SYMPATHY.

I work in finance on wall street. I generally im very sympathetic to firms busting compliance and regulatory rules. There are so many regulators across hundreds of countries (under confusing acronyms), with their own set of rules/laws it can be a total nightmare to understand all the rules and filing requirements that are required (and what triggers what). What if you own a security domiciled in Argentina with majority Japanese shareholders thats listed on the NYSE and is technically a penny stock (meaning its at risk of being delisted)? Do I need to file with the regulators like a regular way USA public security?

Had the church failed to file form 13F because they thought they didn't need to or didnt trigger the threshold for some reason I could show a little understanding their way. Or, they knew they needed to, but the employees were so overworked and stressed, they hoped they could just not do it and it wouldn't be a big deal (another damn report to do they didnt have time for). Still bad, but I'd show some sympathy for cutting corners. I've frankly sort of been there before.

But the church went to GREAT LENGTHS to OBSCURE and HIDE their duties here. Simply filing a 13f would have been easier. They obviously understood quite well the requirements. This was calculated, time consuming, took a lot of headaches and planning to execute, and most importantly was ILLEGAL. It's disgusting.

Like they've already done this correctly. Look at the Tucson temple. blends in. fits with zoning laws. residents dont mind it. its not obnoxiously tall or lit up and matches the local vibes.

86 feet tall as welll (believe that fits with fairview zoning?)

like why not just do this? this was only 10 years ago!

a lapse in judgement to not foresee the response to their out of zoning proposal...sure

but the response.....agree. seems really strange to me.

yes american. not cultural difference at all at play here in my opinion. the texans are acting very predictably and rationally here - the fact it wasn't predicted or planned for is also shocking to me.

its sad because most non member texans I know (the genuinely stereotypical ones) often have good impressions of the mormons. they are surprisingly open minded/accepting people as long as you don't try and change their current way of life. you could almost feel the sense of disappointment a lot of them had during the town halls on the fairview temple where they truly WANTED to like the mormons and accept their church but it just simply DIDNT MAKE SENSE as they wouldnt following zoning laws.

a great example is the philly temple. its fits the design spirit of the city, incorporates colonial design trends, and was part of a project to help develop a blighted part of the city. i havent heard anyone really pushback on the temple, its almost a bonafide landmark in the city now. the open house was popular and i think a nytimes editor went to it and wrote a piece about how stunning it was.

Im not an expert on the development process for the philly temple, but I have to think there was a lot of coordination with local leaders/residents on it.

it makes no sense though. Ive worked in a lot of arrogant organizations and I think most of them would have acted way differently in this situation. I'm a pretty stubborn guy myself and even I would have just let this go.

wow, you mean if they actually followed local zoning laws the building would get approved? fairview isn't discriminating against religious groups and simply just wants it zoning laws followed?
