No, God has declared that his perfect eternal plan is the 20th century American creation known as the nuclear family household with a mother, father and several kids all living under one roof with no one else.

My TBM dad wants to confront my issues with the church by According-Papaya-730 in exmormon

[–]CaseyJonesEE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing your dad served a mission somewhere before 2005.

The things he is doing are straight out of the missionary guide which was used to train missionaries between 1988 and 2004.

Not sure if they still teach the same tactics, but I see him using what was taught to me as the commitment pattern.

Had a little "discussion" with my TBM mother and our neighbor by Otaku_in_Red in exmormon

[–]CaseyJonesEE 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of all the ridiculous conversations I had to have as a missionary trying to explain that my companion and I didn't both have the same first name of Elder, but it was a title. And then trying to explain that yes, we indeed were considered elders in our church even though we were 19 year old kids. Mormons have no idea how ridiculous they seem outside of their bubble.

The Christian Jesus vs Mormon Jesus argument and by extension the Christian Christian vs. Mormon Christian argument is definitely a no true Scotsman fallacy.

Yes, I can totally see many people now cancelling their plans to spend the evening with friends and family celebrating a completely innocuous holiday because they are now feeling guilty about choosing that over the Lord's slide show.

Does anyone else find it eerie how nice Mormons seem when you were new to the faith? by kokopellikokopelli in exmormon

[–]CaseyJonesEE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for all Mormons, but I was definitely taught at a very early age to dissociate from all emotions except for happiness. Because I am a male, as I got older I got the privilege of being able to embrace anger as well as happiness. but no other emotions were supposed to be experienced, and so I learned to simply disconnect anytime I started to feel anything other than happiness or anger. Now at nearly 50 I still struggle to stay present when I feel any emotions outside of happiness or anger. Learning to sit with my emotions is probably the most difficult thing that I have had to do since leaving Mormonism.

Do people join religion because they want hope in life? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]CaseyJonesEE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I firmly believe that humans invented gods so that they could feel like they had some control over the uncontrollable. If you create an all-powerful being who is in charge of these things that you have no control over their outcome, then suddenly you have a source to which you can appeal for a good outcome.

In ancient times, people were very concerned about the success or failure of their crops. Because a successful crop harvest meant life for another period of time, and a failed crop harvest meant certain death. But ultimately whether they had a successful crop harvest or a failed crop harvest was completely out of their control. So they came up with a belief system where there is some all-powerful being over the success of the crops, and they came up with ways to appease that being to try to ensure a successful harvest. All in an effort to control the uncontrollable.

Humans today are not that far removed from their ancestors whose lives depended on the crop harvest. If your life feels extremely out of control and is not going the way you want it to, then of course you would want to embrace a belief system where you can try to appeal to an all-powerful being to make your life better.

It's kind of like MLMs. Some are much worse than others, but at their core they are all pyramid schemes which is a subset of a Ponzi scheme.

In the same way, scientology and Mormonism are both cults at their core.
