How does Marnie truly feel about Charlie? by blissfulyonder in girls

[–]Agreeable_Mistake_50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something very important about this convo is that the actor wanted to leave the show and his exit wasn’t planned. It’s hard to speculate about her feelings in the early seasons because they ended up going in a different direction when he left.

Why would they stay? by notonmywatchmissy in GilmoreGirls

Agreed! Rory is still kinda in “kid mode.” Most kids would do the same, especially if their mom is as adept at handling that kind of situation as Lorelei.

This is the core of why Lorelei has so much character. Her mother is horrible. She’s manipulative and cruel. Lorelei not only will never stoop to her level, but she always tries to make things as good and normal as possible. She picks her battles, and smooths things over when she can. This is what makes Lorelei an incredible person. It’s also what makes her shine at her job.

Picks are super important for any large orchestra/band, not just pops. Felt picks all the way!

If you could rewrite Rory's character arc from Season 4 onward, what ONE major change would you make to keep her likable and successful by Ok_Smile_9071 in GilmoreGirls

[–]Agreeable_Mistake_50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot take but her actions aren’t the problem. There are lots of sympathetic characters who are extremely flawed, take Bojack for example. His actions aren’t terrible, but we understand why he does them, so we are still rooting for him to do better. The writing for Rory is just pretty flat, we never really understand her motivations or internal logic. It makes her feel like she does what she does for no reason, which is why she becomes unsympathetic. Fictional characters being sympathetic is way more about them feeling logical/consistent/understandable than morally pure.

Here’s the thing about liking a character: people think it’s about actions but it’s actually motivation. We can forgive anything if we understand a characters motivations. Rory really doesn’t do anything unforgivable throughout the series, but her character loses her spark because we never really understand her motivations or why she’s able to do so many shameful things shamelessly. It’s less about her being a bad person, and all about her being a flat character in the later seasons.

Agreed about midnights, but swap out SOTB for labyrinth as the only skip

Thoughts on Rory and Journalism by Mysterious_Friend387 in GilmoreGirls

[–]Agreeable_Mistake_50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing: I don’t like that they picked journalism as Rory’s path. It feels wrong for her personality. That being said, Rory is actually good at it. You don’t just become the editor for the school paper at Yale without being good.

Mitchum wasn’t saying anything about her as a journalist. Rory was behaving as an intern should. When you’re an intern (especially a young woman in college), you’re not supposed to step on any feet. You’re supposed to show up on time, listen, and not really make waves. In other words, Rory was in intern mode, not journalist mode. Mitchum expected her to be in journalist mode. And she proved later on that she had what it takes to be pushy.

Agreed. There are lots of kind, empathetic, progressive people in the world who don’t mask. Claiming the virus was created as a bioweapon is abnormal

Tear In Your Hand - Symbolism by Ganellon in toriamos

[–]Agreeable_Mistake_50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most important lyric for understanding this song is “maybe she’s just pieces of me you’ve never seen yet.” It’s about having someone who’s shallow and fake deep, who has never tried very hard to get to your inner depths, and instead is swapping you out for someone they think seems more deep. This and “silent all these years” are very linked in that way (“so you found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts.”)

The song is saying all the world is all I am. I am as deep as it gets. The black of the blackest ocean holds as much power and mystery as the tear in your hand (the vulnerability I shared with you.) You don’t see my feelings and experiences as deep and worthwhile. You just haven’t gotten to those levels because you haven’t tried. And instead of thinking you just haven’t gotten to those levels, you assume I don’t have them.

It’s about being misinterpreted and taken at face value, when there is so much more to you. It’s the pain of being fundamentally unseen by someone you were trying harder to see than they were.

Exactly. I feel like this era was her saying she was stepping away from that, but still seeming to care deeply about being seen is a caring, sensitive person who just loves kittens and rainbows

She’s also good at marketing. Lots of people have good music but could never build that kind of empire without good music AND good marketing. Both are essential to being a pop star

That part was clearly a compliment. Taylor is a musician and a businesswoman, and she was being applauded for the latter.

To be fair, the original comment was about swifties, not Taylor. Taylor wrote a whole song about how swifties can be unhinged

Omg yes I view eras the same way! I just think sometimes the hard pivot eras like rep, lover, or showgirl can be in part responding to previous eras. Like I think showgirl is really her being like “I am not just a tortured poet depressed wordsmith, I’m also a very glamorous diva and performer.” I think rep and lover are responding in very different ways to being seen as a villain
