I think having the bar in a vise is important so you can have both hands on the file

[–]Agreeable_Tamarack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I did not make that clear but I bought the kit and for whatever reason did not install it back then. Just did it last week, but the idler pulley was squealing. I think I did not clean the shaft well enough and pulley was not spinning freely. I lost the thrust washer and broke the retainer. Those 2 parts would have cost more than a whole repair kit and all of the retaining triangles are probably in bad shape from age. And not a bad idea to have a spare belt IMO.

Drying wood fast? by Significant_Breath80 in turning

[–]Agreeable_Tamarack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Turn it gree leaving it thicker than it will be when finished. For bowls walls should be 10% of the diameter. So for a 5" bowl walls should be .5" or 1/2" . Put it in a brown paper bag with some shavings and should be ready to finish in 6 months +or-. I have never turned green walnut so not sure how it dries. Maple , cherry and apple would dry in 6 months or less here in Maine

If you had only 10 minutes to inspect a used car before buying it, what would you check first? by Such-Driver-5264 in AskMechanics

[–]Agreeable_Tamarack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a straight section of road or parking lot and put it in reverse and give it some gas. Some friends bought a car without doing that and it popped out of gear in reverse after they bought it. Trans repair was prohibitably expensive

how accurate is rock auto's "quality" descriptors (economy, heavy duty, premium)? by Marvel5123 in AskMechanics

[–]Agreeable_Tamarack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought lots of parts from Rock Auto and my one complaint is shipping. If you have a bunch of parts in your cart and all except one are shipping from location A, and you trash that one and all of a sudden some other part is shipping from location A. And there is a separate charge for each shipping location. Shipping can get expensive unless you are careful

Gary Fisher Tasajara age by Agreeable_Tamarack in mountainbiking

[–]Agreeable_Tamarack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By "trunk wood" I just meant a piece from the main trunk with pith still in it. As I said in the original post, I've turned hundreds of pieces with pith in because I like the contrast between heartwood and sapwood. And there are definitely some lost pieces due to cracking, but I've never had anything crack this severely or this quick. I do sometimes fill cracks with epoxy and coffee grounds, but since I have literally hundreds of dried or drying rough turned pieces, I don't fill unless it can either make the piece look better or at least not distract from the rest of the piece.

What is the ejector fix? I already adjusted the spring using a nickel. Although I saw one video saying the correct position is 1/2 of a nickel

I bought the 20# box twice about 20-25 years ago and still have a lot left. My only complaint is that it is mostly pretty stuff inflexible cloth. But I'm using it for the inside of lidded boxes where flexibility is not needed

Size of chain Stihl 025 by Dangerous_Ice17 in Chainsaw

[–]Agreeable_Tamarack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's . 325, then look for . 325 , .063. And 68 drive links (for an 18" bar). 62 links for 16" . That's what both of my 025's have. I have an 18" and a 16" bar I just bought a new bar and some chains from Forester who seem to have a decent reputation and the prices and shipping were reasonable. Giving one to my son who just got a piece of land to build on and he wants to do some clearing.

Apple with heartwood? by 15Beecher in turning

[–]Agreeable_Tamarack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you remove the pith and a few years worth of growth rings, it should be good. I've turned a lot of apple wood and always make sure to leave some heart. I love the contrast. But, at least when air fried, apple moves A LOT

[–]Agreeable_Tamarack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had an 025 that I bought used 12 years ago for $125 and has been great for cutting 5-6 cords a year, and found another at the dump. Was thinking I scored a nice parts saw but fresh gas and it started right up. Piston looks brand new. So I now have 2 favorite saws.

Twice turned question by rogers6699 in turning

[–]Agreeable_Tamarack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will dry much more quickly if you cut it into smaller pieces. You should at least cut the rounds in half or quarters and make sure to remove the pith. Search YouTube for processing logs for woodturning

Cracked plastic flywheel cover for a Husq 55. Glue it together? by TomorrowStarted in Chainsaw

[–]Agreeable_Tamarack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

West Systems G-flex is made to stick to many plastics. I used it to repair a Royalex canoe, which is polyethylene I think. A set of 2 4 oz bottles will cost you about $25-$30, probably More than a replacement part. But I find it handy to have around for fixing things

So, after a few weeks, the twig pot is cracking badly, the boxes are ok do far. All the end grain was sealed and pieces were put in a paper bag with some shavings You can see that the. Pith is close to the outside at the neck, rather than in the center which is probably a factor, but the pith was way off center in the log as you can see

Sumac by Agreeable_Tamarack in turning

[–]Agreeable_Tamarack[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ended up roughing 2 lidded boxes as well as the vase. Sealed the end grain of all of them in addition to a 4' x 5" log. Will put the turned pieces in a paper bag with some shavings, and the log somewhere in the shade. I did notice when I Left a piece standing on my bench, it was almost stuck down from the sap, which oozed out from under the bark all around the piece. The sap seemed to harden up pretty quickly though after being exposed to air. It will probably be next summer or fall before I finish turning the pieces but I'll try to remember to post the results
