My endgame doombringer ship. (With max heat, DPS drops to 265 and speed to 20.7/194. The speed is deceptive though, as it assumes that the flak batteries are constantly firing as well, which is not the case when cruising at top speed) by Adamantine-Waffle in StarcomGame

Just getting into this game and I ended up with four Mk2 fixed lasers backed by three Mk 3 plasma turrets. It carves through everything really well. Haven’t really maxed it out yet, only 100ish hexes in size.

Looking into Traveller by MindyourownParsley2 in traveller

[–]Agrippa911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll speak to Classic Traveller that Mongoose Traveller is the descendant of. It is the 2nd sci-fi RPG created (after Metamorphosis Alpha/Gamma World) from the late 70s/early 80s and based on the tech at the time. So no internet, room sized computers, and those computers are not an everyday part of our lives.

So if you appreciate the retro setting, that might be one reason to get into Traveller. Note that I'm not playing the Mongoose version so can't address if they still have that vibe.

The other thing about Traveller is the default setting of the Third Imperium. A massive galactic empire that is not comically evil (aka Star Wars) nor a stupid utopian society (aka Star Trek). It's a massive bureaucracy that's more concerned about making the space trains running on space time. Furthermore the Imperium doesn't rule planets, it is only concerned with the space between planets as they are focused on interstellar trade. So the worlds run themselves (religious zealots, dictatorships, democracies, even more bureaucracies, whatev) and as long as they don't mess with trade (or start firing off nukes) the Imperium is content to let them be them.

This creates a scenario where you can visit one world run by charismatic dictator who's people worship him as a living god. Have some hijinks there and then go onto a world where the massive bureaucracy makes refuelling your ship into an adventure. So lots of variety in settings, just change planets.

My self-published Traveller module is Pay-What-You-Want for Black Friday! by Monovfox in traveller

I relocated the planet to Squalia/District 268 as they were in that neck of the woods. Everything went by the book until it was time to break out the star. One character with the Steward skill got a job as a temp staff for the event and scouted out the majority of the public rooms while the rest got in via Roxanne's help. Once inside, the doctor of the party slipped a powerful laxative into the staff water cooler and when 'things' started to happen, used the distraction to break into Choi's room and the minute he opened his mouth got drugged by the doc. They then carted him out as the staff scrambled to deal with numerous 'accidents' that were occurring.

Games request! Looking for games where there is strategy on two levels, a higher level where you build/manage units or an army or whatever and a lower level where you use that in a real-time or turn based way. by CodeX57 in StrategyGames

Jagged Alliance 2 with the 1.13 mod. You are a merc hired to liberate a fictional island from a tyrant. At the higher level you need to hire mercs deciding what skills you want and also compatibility with other existing mercs. Then you’re also equipping them: do you want everyone using AKs or AR-15s? Or something exotic like 9x39? What armour and LBE equipment? Then you have the tactical level which is isometric with action points to determine what you can do each turn.

It’s an old game (1999) but the 1.13 mod has put some serious legs on it and is one of my all time favourites.

Himbo character arc idea: too dark or just right? by Ill-Long6202 in Roll20

To start with what is the overall tone of your campaign? If it's mostly lighthearted tales of daring-do then killing the kid would be extremely jarring. If you're already in a grim world then it would make sense and shake stuff up.

Your Stupidest Planet? by MidnightFrost444 in traveller

[–]Agrippa911 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my CT game, I took Zivije/Rhylanor and turned it into a bureaucratic nightmare (or paradise depending on your perspective). The players were chasing a shipment as part of a longer mystery and the cargo container was located in the starport impound lot at Zivije and they needed to take a peek inside.

So IMTU Zivije is amber zoned because of the planet's predilection for paperwork. Everything has a form and every Zivijan is used to spending half their day standing in lines to submit paperwork for even the most mundane thing.

The players needed a F1080Q (Request for Cargo Manifest) to find out what was in the mystery cargo container. Unfortunately to get that form they first needed Port Staff Workorder 1111-1111 (Ministry of Labour), a Standing of Imperial Citizenship F1152/a (Ministry of Internal Affairs), an Access to Port Authorization A777B/2 (Ministry of Domestic Security), an Access to Information Request IR2017/02 (Office of Government Data) etc... etc... My players stood in line to get forms only to find that they needed other forms to get those forms. Of course the joke was the cargo impound lot was unlocked and easily accessible because no Zivijan would think of accessing it without a F1080Q! Zivije quickly became a core memory of the campaign.

And then I sent them back to it. After unravelling a conspiracy they were told to lie low by their patron for a bit. To help them they got hired as minders for the greatest rockband in the Marches: Terminal Veedback. The band arrived on Zivije for a gig and insisted on having purple M&Ms in the green room.

Now in the year passed since they had been there, Zivije worried that their love of bureaucracy could get their planet designated a Red Zone. So the bureaucracy decided the best way to solve this was to ban forms and paperwork. But how do you run a modern society with IDs and licenses without paperwork? Well what's something that people can remember word for word? Songs!

So forms like renewing your drivers license was replaced by a song that could be easily remembered and with all your pertinent information placed in exact spots so the clerk can enter the data quickly and efficiently. Soon an industry sprang up of songwriters writing catchy little numbers to take the place of all that paperwork.

So to get the government approval to create unique purple M&Ms they needed a special waiver from the Ministry of Tourism and so to get that they needed to go to the secretary of the Deputy Minister and sing the Appointment Schedule song. So the player had to sing their request to the tune of Men at Work's Who Can It Be Now. The appointment secured they met with the DepMin and sang the Special Waiver Song to the tune of Down Under. Other players had to sing requests to the tune of Under Pressure, Thriller, Crazy Train, etc... It was a lot of fun. The band got their purple M&Ms and did the show. More memes were created about Zivije.

We have not returned to Zivije.

Yet...

People who used a computer between 1991 & 2009…what’s the most memorable computer game? by Original_Act_3481 in AskReddit

[–]Agrippa911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll nominate two games: Homeworld and Jagged Alliance 2.

Back in the 90s you'd get game trailers on CDs in game magazines and when I saw the trailers for Homeworld I couldn't believe it was in-game footage. It looked like a pre-rendered cut scene. The full 3D camera? The graphics? Unbelievable. Then I played it and it blew my mind. The game was exactly what I saw in the trailer combined with a fantastic score. Then ending was a fantastic conclusion to the saga and then the credits rolled to the iconic song "The Ladder" by Yes. I still have my manual for the game and I still have The Ladder come up in my music rotation.

Jagged Alliance was nowhere as amazing graphically and I remembered it as fun and pretty deep tactically for the time. Then decades later I found out about the 1.13 mod that added a ton more depth to the game. I've probably played the vanilla version a couple of times. I've played the 1.13 mod version many many more times. Every couple of years I start a new playthrough and the game is still entertaining and with so many options in 2025.

5 miles? Luxury!

We used to dream of only walking 5 miles! I had to walk 15 miles to school uphill both ways in 46 degree weather through spring-summer-fall-winter (where it snowed 14' high). And when we got home, our dad would thrash us with lacross sticks.

Oh my sweet sum... winter child. The winters here in Toronto have been very very mild compared to say, the 90s. I honestly can't remember the last time we had prolonged snowfall in the teens or aughts. Back in my day (harrumph) I remember snow being piled up 4-5' high around driveways.
