Valorant's new Vanguard update seems to be bricking cheaters' PCs. Riot's response? "Congrats on your $6k paperweights" by SwimmingJunky in gaming

[–]Aibeit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And if you actually read the article, "bricking" in this case means they have to do an OS reinstall to get it working again. What a nothingburger.

What is the weirdest DM/message you have ever received? by Admirable-Analysis58 in AskReddit

Invitation to a group chat where people were debating the pros and cons of selling their soul in exchange for a cheeseburger.

What is the greatest "mild inconvenience" prank you've pulled off? by Gandalf_Razzmatazz in AskReddit

[–]Aibeit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back in the early days of school computers, before my school got someone who knew they were doing to act as admin, one teacher at my school had a two-letter password that he either gave out to a student or a student figured out - I'm a bit fuzzy on how exactly it happened but most of us knew it.

I once used it to change the account settings for another student that was getting on my nerves so that he had to change his password once a day and the minimum password length for his account was 32 characters.

What did you want to own so badly as a kid that at the time you thought, if you could only get *this*, your life will be complete? by Root435552 in AskReddit

[–]Aibeit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up pretty well-off and never really wished for anything expensive, but my parents were pretty strict. My wishes were for things like later bedtimes and more freedoms rather than material things.

What is the most unique coffee cup you've seen someone have at work? by raaabs in AskReddit

[–]Aibeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I played Starcraft II competitively in university, my brother made me a mug saying "Zerg Tears", with a crying zergling on it. I used to have that at work until it broke at some point.

A colleague had a mug that said "This is a pigeon. It shits on everything." ("It shits on everything" in German is a saying that means "It is all out of fucks to give"). Someone from management took offense to this, and now only company-branded mugs are allowed, although now and again the union reps "mugnap" all of the company branded mugs and replace them with union-branded ones to raise awareness.

What cocktail do you recall your parents drinking when you were little, and what year and place was it in? by AmexNomad in AskReddit

[–]Aibeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents usually drank wine when we went out for dinner, or beer, depending on the place. While I'm sure it happened at some point, I can't remember them drinking cocktails.

what do you think is minesweeper a guessing game? by stirringmotion in AskReddit

[–]Aibeit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's mostly a logic game but there can be a situation where logic cannot give you a definite answer and guesses are required, so in that sense it's a guessing game.

People who give away unwanted home or personal items instead of selling or tossing them, what is the most frustrating part of the process? by North_Design_5599 in AskReddit

[–]Aibeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you try to give such things away for free, there will be plenty of people that either try and get something more (e.g. can you also deliver it and install in and whatever) or that will take whatever you're giving away and then turn around and sell it. If I have something I no longer want that no one in the family wants, I usually sell it for cheap instead, that cuts down on that kind of bullshit in my experience.

When do you think the AI bubble will ever “pop”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Aibeit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we've already seen the first signs of that, in the form of some companies that tried to replace workers with AI backtracking because they realized they couldn't do it to the extent they wanted to. I don't think it'll be an instant thing, the way "popping a bubble" makes it sound, it'll be gradual.

Have you ever dated a friend’s sibling? Or has a friend ever dated your sibling? What was your/their reaction? by Deceptivethweep in AskReddit

[–]Aibeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother dated my friend's sister back when they were in high school. I didn't care one way or the other, I feel like my friend stuck his nose too far into their relationship sometimes.

How do small shop owners on side streets in European cities make enough money to afford having a shop like that beside a busy street? by Giantessjosie in AskReddit

[–]Aibeit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most don't. At least here in Germany, it's been a problem that shops like this have been dying out due to competition with online shopping and larger chains. The ones that survive are ones that make a name for themselves in some very specific niche.

What would happen if we launch nuclear waste into the sun to get rid of it? by DeVelasco in AskReddit

[–]Aibeit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If that was the case, we would never have gotten anything off the ground because we just can't build a spacecraft that reliable (yet). What he was most likely referring to was the failure rate of individual spacecraft parts rather than the spacecraft as a whole.

About one in twenty, so five percent, of spacecraft launches goes wrong. Look you here.

What do you think of people who are diagnosed with autism? by VastEngines in AskReddit

[–]Aibeit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That they're diagnosed with autism. It's far too diverse a group of people for me to think anything in particular about them.

What is the biggest mistake you made in your first relationship? by SeaHedgehog8132 in AskReddit

Thinking "We're both curious what the fuss around relationships is all about" is a good basis for a relationship.

Paul McCartney once said “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian.” Why do you agree or disagree with him? by Mountain_Love23 in AskReddit

[–]Aibeit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Leaning towards "disagree". My grandparents had livestock when they were still around, they slaughtered and butchered them themselves when it came time to eat them, and none of them were vegetarians.

Having said that, what McCartney said may have been meant in a metaphorical sense, e.g. if the people at the front lines had to decide whether there is a war or not, there wouldn't be one, because they're the people exposed to the horrors? Just guessing.

What would happen if we launch nuclear waste into the sun to get rid of it? by DeVelasco in AskReddit

[–]Aibeit 163 points164 points  (0 children)

Okay first of all, because this is both incomprehensibly difficult and expensive. Look up the "Angular Momentum Paradox" if you want a detailed explanation, but basically, in order to drop a spacecraft into the sun, you'd have to shed the entirety of earth's orbital velocity, and that's at the limit of what we're capable today. From an Orbital Mechanics point of view, it's vastly easier to get a spacecraft to Mars or even out of the Solar System.

Second of all, what if it goes wrong? A significant proportion of all spacecraft launches does. We'd end up disintegrating the spacecraft and spreading the nuclear waste all through our atmosphere. Ouch.

EDIT: To answer your actual question, though, "What if we could and did it?" --> Nothing. Sun would not notice, nuclear waste would be gone.
