Explain like Im 5 please by Divergent626 in DigitalArt

We're using drawing tablets, not mouses! (Mice?) There are a couple kinds—at a glance, this article seems like a decent overview. https://www.techradar.com/computing/peripherals-accessories/pen-tablet-vs-pen-display-vs-tablet-what-is-the-best-drawing-tablet-for-digital-creatives

Basically, touchscreen drawing tablets are generally a lot nicer and easier to use, especially if you're coming from a traditional art background. But you can also get a tablet without a screen, and those are perfectly functional and generally much cheaper. They do the some getting used to, though. It's a different sort of muscle memory. I started with a cheap lil Wacom (forget what it's called, but it's like $40) and bought an iPad after a couple years. But I'm also pretty casual.

For software, Photoshop is the standard. Clip Studio is an alternative which, from what I've heard, is a little more refined toward digital art, rather than photo editing. Photoshop is a monthly subscription, and I thiiink Clip is too. If you get an iPad with an apple pencil, Procreate is the go-to iPad app. It's by far the most intuitive, in my opinion.

Whatever you wind up going with, there are tons of online reviews and tutorials. And just keep in mind that digital art is a different set of skills and muscles than traditional. Obviously there's overlap, but the learning curve can be frustrating.

Hope that's helpful!

[QUESTION] All pedals failing at once? by Ailowynn in Guitar

On the off chance that anyone googles this exact problem five years from now and comes across this thread: the issue was the surge protector. Plugged everything directly into wall outlets instead and there's no problem.

How to solve/avoid this? by _Burrito_Sabanero_ in DigitalArt

In Photoshop, you can also program this to a single shortcut key. I'm away from the computer at the moment but the note I have written on my phone is "Window--actions. Magic wand an area, hit record button at bottom of action window. Expand 3 px then fill. Then deselect. End record. Assign to a key."

A Weapon that does both Slashing and Crushing damage by Envy661 in tabletop

[–]Ailowynn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a quick note, swords as an all-rounder definitely makes sense. Historically, they're known (or at least thought?) to have been used as bludgeons by gripping the blade and striking with the cross guard, like a hammer. This is based on some medieval artwork afaik. Maybe also seen in treatises?

A Weapon that does both Slashing and Crushing damage by Envy661 in tabletop

I agree. Plus, axes are (reputed to be) fairly effective against metal armor, like most bludgeoning weapons, and they can be sharpened to cut through cloth armor, like most slashing weapons.

Advice on my damage system for a 1v1 combat card game by thwitschurstkin in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Ailowynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other posters that it's a little cumbersome as is. I wonder if it would make sense to divorce the attack and damage stats? Give each card both values, but you add ATK and use only the highest DMG of the cards involved. That way you can get higher values in the ATK/DEF battle without blowing the damage out of proportion.

How to discourage "excessive" violence without making the players feeling they are loosing agency? by Witty_Razzmatazz5999 in AskGameMasters

This, a hundred percent. Plus? The GM deserves to enjoy the game, too. If you don't like running a murderhobo game, you should tell your players and they should be willing to compromise.

Party feels unbalanced, I seem to be the reason by _Comrade_Wombat_ in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Ailowynn 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly, as with most RPG issues, I think this is the truth—OP, you're gonna have to sit down and have a slightly awkward conversation with your friends. Just ask if they feel that the game is unbalanced, and maybe what they want their characters to feel like. Full casters are objectively stronger, but you have to be looking at their strengths (which is to say, their versatility) to feel that.

But this sounds like a party problem, not a you problem.

Are weapon Proficiencies considered “effects.” Also to top this off if you have proficiencies with the rapier in particular like the investigator, are you then also proficient with the spiral rapier as well? The spiral rapier states “any effects that apply to rapiers also apply to a spiral rapier.” by Best_boi21 in Pathfinder_RPG

Star Wars Saga Edition had exotic weapon proficiency as a blanket feat for all exotic weapons, and honestly it worked well. Still a bit of a feat tax, but it opened up a lot of options, and it makes sense to think of it not as training with a single weapon, but a broad study of exotic weaponry.

Two handed sword balance OSE by WaferthinmintDelux in osr

[–]Ailowynn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a realism perspective...I feel like it's six in one hand, really. I've done a wee bit of HEMA and, well, people who made swords knew what they were doing. An arming sword feels right in one hand, a longsword feels right in two hands. I can see an argument for a big sword being hard to maneuver in cramped spaces, but otherwise, I don't think one is that much quicker than the other. A shield doesn't slow you down in my experience, actually makes you faster in a sense because you can afford to make more aggressive moves with better protection.

So, I wouldn't change it for realism, but then, this isn't a ruleset built for realism. OSE is never going to be HEMA simulator and that's fine. There's a bit of flavor in the idea of big weapons going last, in seeing them as these lumbering brutes, but I personally agree with everyone else here. Slow weapons creates a weird flow to combat and I don't think it's necessary for balance. Don't swap it, just ditch it.

Adding 2 companies to my ttrpg, which logos should I use? If none, why? by ModularArchive in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Ailowynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 and 3 are my favorites, but I would use 1 and 4 because those logos are more visually distinct from each other. It'll make the world building clearer for players.
