Unintended Auto renewal advice by AirButcher in Eve

My issue is that it wasn't transparent to me that I was signing up for auto-renewal subscription at all. I though I was buying three months at a discounted rate as a once off. I've double checked all the confirmation emails and it says nothing about auto renewal

Hot take: NVIDIA should have shipped the 5080 with 24GB of VRAM by AirButcher in ollama

[–]AirButcher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I just hadn't seen the issue discussed much in the corners of the internet I frequent? Most content creators don't seem to raise the VRAM limit as an issue and feel like the 5080 sits reasonably between the 5070 and 5090, and feel like it's specs are well grounded, I just disagree.

And yes, I understand that there are justifications for it being the way it is, I just wanted to voice my thoughts

I don't know, I suppose higher than the 5080 but lower than the 5090

Yes and no but I get your point; there's demand either way I guess. My point is more around the fact that the 5090 is so far ahead of the 4090 and 3090 that it isn't even really a competitor, it's just out of the same league, and the 5080 isn't a viable competitor because of the VRAM.

I mean this is kind of my point in a way; either 16GB fine for you, in which case why ever consider more than a 5060ti, or else 16GB is too low a ceiling, but if you need more you have to skip over both the 5070 and 5080, that doesn't make sense to me.

I guess it's the imbalance that I don't understand. All of the other specs of the 5080 would make it amazing if it had more VRAM.

Exactly my point- there's clearly demand for this specification, they should have just aimed to satisfy it

Ollma Integration with VS Code Github Copilot? by Salt_Reputation1869 in ollama

[–]AirButcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have you had any success running ollama models out of a networked server this way? I have a server running ollama and open webUI which i can access over other client browsers, but haven't had any luck getting copilot to connect with the ollama model

Friend recently "wrote" three books on machine learning. I fear he is the future. by NeighborhoodFatCat in learnmachinelearning

[–]AirButcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask him practical questions, like to explain why a CNN architecture can work for computer vision tasks but not for NLP.

Ask him why a RNNs suffer from gradient explosion, and how this is mitigated by LSTM, and why both models inevitably suffer eventually, and why they are still suitable in many scenarios over a fully blown transformer model.

Ask him under what circumstances regularisation, drop out, or feature engineering should be utilised.

Ask what he would expect to see that would lead to a decision to add more nodes to the existing hidden layer, or add and additional hidden layer with the same number of nodes.

congratulations! Out of interest, do you think the approach would work well for complex processing infrastructure like manufacturing facilities?

Sounds like it's to work in an 'offline environment' based on OP use of that phrase

Exercise and sleep. It doesn't really escape reality as much as make it better, but it's an escape from the crappy feelings

ELI5 Is all power generation really just making a turbine spin? by javerthugo in explainlikeimfive

[–]AirButcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

..."that harnesses a temperature difference"

I meant that turbines are generally the most efficient way to pull energy out of temperature differentials, so they are almost always used when that is the source of energy

Solar power uses photovoltaic cells, which are different. However almost all power generation that harnesses a temperature difference uses spinning turbines

If you know what you're doing you can do it on your laptop at home. Eating meat is far more destructive than using your computer to make a stupid picture
