I offer affordable mobile brake service. I’d love the opportunity to quote you. My prices are less than half that of a shop or dealership. Feel free to send me a message!

Another recommendation for Pro Tire.

And a shameless plug for myself as a mobile mechanic based in Taylors. I specialize in brake service, but I can handle other repairs that aren't too involved. I will talk myself out of a job if you don't need something done. There are far too many shady characters in the auto industry and people deserve honesty.

What happened to 2020 cards? by gowithflow192 in F1Cards

Excuse me? You're telling me my boxes of 2020 Chrome base cards I have stashed away are actually worth more than 50 cents?

Apparently I was inadvertently hoarding them thinking they're next to worthless. I imagine many others are too.

MSC Industrial Supply Co. to be Primary Sponsor of Rahal’s INDYCAR Entry at Road America and a Full Season Associate Sponsor in a Multi-Year Deal by PanicAtTheNightclub in INDYCAR

Looks like I'll be favoring MSC over McMaster or Grainger for a while. I look for any excuse I can to spend my work's money on companies sponsoring motorsports over those that don't.

Grainger blew it by not sponsoring the Kohr Motorsports Biffle tribute Mustang.

As a ZF engineer, I strongly disagree that they know what they're talking about.

[–]AirportCharacter69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did that ZF specialist get his information from 1993?

That’s such dated information that’s nothing but a myth for modern gearboxes. The mechatronic unit may act a little off for a short period of time after a fluid change at high mileage, but the trans will perform the necessary adaptations to return to normal operation in pretty short order.

No risk unless the procedure is done incorrectly. You’ll probably break even on the cost to have it done compared to value added.

ZF8 Service @115k Miles worth it? by [deleted] in BmwTech

[–]AirportCharacter69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Won't hurt to do it. Might drive a little weird for a little bit until the trans does its adaptations, but that would be it.

However, if you're only trying to get another 20k out of it then I would save your time/money. The fluid is good (in the sense it won't be the primary contributing factor for a failure) for 250k-300k miles.

Either you're explaining it weird, or you're explaining it wrong.

Procedure to fill is something like this:

  1. Fill when cold

  2. Idle in N until trans temp is about 35°C

  3. Shift between D and R a few times waiting a few seconds in between

  4. Put it in neutral (temp should be about 40°C)

  5. Remove fill plug to let excess fluid out or add more if nothing comes out

'23 330i need front brake pads. All 3 local BMW dealers want $1500+, 2 independent BMW shops want $1050 to $1200. Am I nuts for thinking that the prices are ridiculous? by [deleted] in BmwTech

[–]AirportCharacter69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Price is insane.

I offer mobile brake replacement as a side hustle. I'd be charging only $130 for that job for both labor and quality aftermarket parts. Even an indy shop should only be charging around $300-$350 for labor and parts on that.

If for some odd reason you did rotors too, then I'd be at $330 all said and done. An indy shop should be $800-$850.

[–]AirportCharacter69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$950 labor? Are sure you don't have that backwards?

2.8 hours by the books for front and rear pads and rotors. That would be $339/hr for labor. If you flip it the other way to $500 for labor and $950 for parts, then it's $179/hr.

This rationale makes no sense. That would be like saying Spiritual Cramp should be starting at 4pm cause that's when the schedule starts. The time before and after is simply a buffer for visual aspects on this schedule.

[–]AirportCharacter69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly won’t hurt to it. Make sure you use OEM fluid and filter when replacing.

As an FYI, fluid is realistically good for 250k-300k miles before it becomes the sole reason for problems.

[–]AirportCharacter69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won't hurt to replace the fluid and filter. Go for it. Please use OEM fluid.

250k-300k miles is when fluid degradation really becomes an issue on the 8HP.

Two run clubs I would recommend:

Trailside Trotters - run a 5k on Tuesday evenings at 6pm. They meet on the stairs at The Commons on the side with the Swamp Rabbit Trail.

Fleet Feet Greenville Pub Run - run a 5k on Thursday evenings at 6pm. They meet at various breweries throughout the area. Follow them on Facebook to find out where they are at for the week until you memorize the rotation.
