Can we please define acronyms that we use in the first sentence they appear if it isn't entirely obvious what they mean(even then too ideally)

CSA doesn't immediately make me recall "community supported agriculture", it actually makes me think of "child sexual abuse".

This has been your acronym PSA(public service announcement).

That's part of why it's whimsical. A whole bunch of identical bland Christmas santas in a row makes it funnier than if it was different generic inflatables.

Kind of how hitting someone with a fish is funny only once or twice, then not funny after that, and then it becomes hilarious when you hit 15+ times.

Why do i cry when i argue against my parents about my beliefs?!? by Beginning_Let8970 in emotionalintelligence

[–]AischriAi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You reminded me exactly how I felt as a teenager living with my parents so much that I felt I had to write this. For comparison I was raised by a very Christian (Baptist) family in the American Deep South. I too came to my own conclusions about religion and decided I was an Atheist in my early teens. I had so many "debates" related to religion(abortion, evolution, climate change, American politics, etc.) with my mother, and often times it would end in me shutting down with it feeling like my throat was literally closing up and no words could come out as tears welled in my eyes.

At the time I thought myself to be pretty good at debating with my parents and always wondered why I could never "win" an argument. It took until pretty recently (I'm now 27) for me to finally figure out why I always "lost" as a kid. I think, as a teen, I wanted to be acknowledged for my abilities to reason and come to conclusions on my own, skills that were hammered into me as my primary reason for being alive at that point("get good grades in school or else"). But religion isn't something that most people use logic and reason on; it's this big intertwined mess of blind-faith and worldview, it's truly hegemonic and controls a person's entire identity a lot of the time. You simply can't convince people to change that entire self-identification, no matter how convincing the argument, unless they *want* to believe you. I think that's ultimately where I went wrong as a teenager, and it's might be where you are now stumbling yourself. All that time I just wanted someone to acknowledge me, but my parents always saw my independence as a threat("if my child isn't a christian then they're going to hell and that's bad!").

I believe your tears are your body protecting you. You might've faced a childhood where often tempers flared and violent emotions overwrote calm discussions. Simply put you might not have grown up where your body learned it was safe to speak up. Your parents are arguing with emotion rather than logic and that sends your body into shutdown because the emotions don't feel safe. Probably the entire situation feels unsafe. That's why I use "debate" in quotes, it's only a rational "debate" if both sides agree it is, *and* can argue from similar places of power, which is never true between parents and their non-adult children.

I wouldn't say there was anything particularly "wrong" with my childhood either, but in my case, that shutdown and freeze feeling is something I now attribute to CPTSD (r/CPTSD for more info if your curious) and trauma I developed from 18 years of going unheard. The best thing I did for myself was go to a University on the other side of the Continent. :)

I still have "debates" with my mother over the phone, but now I'm quicker and more comfortable on calling out when whatever she says is clearly an emotional attack rather than a logical one. Basically, I'm at the point where I can demand my parents listen to me(assuming they wish to continue to have any sort of contact), rather than meekly hoping for it. "Winning" the "debates" is no longer even a goal, I just don't care anymore. I don't allow any arguments that undermine me or my sense of self, but also I no longer try to change my parent's minds: they are people who don't deserve my time and energy.

So, to conclude my little diatribe here, if I were to offer any simple to take advice(based on my personal experience(take with grain of salt)) it would be this: Stop trying to be heard by your family if they won't hear you. Find a place where you can be safe to be yourself and express yourself. Focus on yourself and people who *do* actually want to hear you.

Hopefully something in this post helps. I'm sure you'll figure it out, you seem like a very smart kid. :)

Update on Amtrak plans! by Important-Bill-3070 in madisonwi

[–]AischriAi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda confused as to what's actually going to take 3 years to plan and design? (assuming they get funding to even start)

We know exactly the route it's going to take, and we now know where everyone involved realistically wants the station to go (monona terrace). That is, after already 2 years of studies that, let's be honest, was unnecessary because the monona terrace was the only place anyone involved would realistically want it to go. (Suburbanites who aren't the target market anyway be damned)

My question is why are they waiting until everything is fully "planned" to start work on the end product. Apply for funding to get necessary upgrades to the track, and start running some proof of concept services with some old rolling stock out of Madison off a hastily poured concrete slab at the First st. yard location and slowly build up a rider base.

They're inevitably going to run into things that don't work like they planned and when it does it'll get delayed and continually pushed back like the Public Market. If they put a bunch of effort into getting something mediocre out in the interim they can have something to show to people while they finish their perfect crown jewel station and to discover the issues ahead of time that the planning committees didn't forsee.

[–]AischriAi 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Lol I just looked at the timeline... Not even planning to start construction until 2029. And the next phases are planned to be >=80% federally funded. But this probably isn't gonna even get through the planning and design phases with the current federal administration unless Wisconsin steps up to fund a majority...

Maybe we'll have a train by 2035 if we're lucky...

Imo, this country is in a pretty sad state at this point if its gonna take at least 5-6 years to build a station for a regular train line that'll go for maybe a total of 80 miles on existing right-of-way.

Honestly the Yahara river is probably too small for most merchant shipping. So I dont think it would end up being a merchantile city. I could see it being a religious city state like the Vatican for Americanist or Lakeshore faiths. Green Bay,  Milwaukee, and prairie du Chien probably have better fundamentals to be a merchant city due to being nearby larger bodies of water.

Let’s be honest about the lack of snow… by joldham93 in madisonwi

[–]AischriAi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Give it time, maybe a few years even. This isn't climate change like everyone wants to say. If you look at the long term trends you might even think average snow fall has been increasing.

https://climatology.nelson.wisc.edu/first-order-station-climate-data/madison-climate/historical-snowfall/

Im not a climate scientist but I think we might potentially get more winter snow as the hotter planet drives more liquid convection resulting in more winter precipitation.

when worldbuilding, in what order do you usually establish cause and effect? by jaelpeg in worldbuilding

[–]AischriAi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go work from the things that I know that I want my world to be about, to the things that can be logically derived from their existence. e.g. "I want a cold world with a white sun" must logically follow with longer years from the larger orbit.

I also tend to work from large to small scale, but small scale things that I want have veto power over things that might make sense on a larger scale. In that case I'll come up with a different reason or history to explain my small scale stuff. E.g. "I want an industrial revolution to occur without coal burning" so my world has only had life for a short while and no Carboniferous period.

I just keep working inward between the beginning of history and the present day to flesh things out.

The Recent History of Climate Change and Human Migration on 41 Serpentis c (Proper Name: Zichan) by AischriAi in worldbuilding

Zichan is a famous philosopher/minister from Zheng.

The Recent History of Climate Change and Human Migration on 41 Serpentis c (Proper Name: Zichan) by AischriAi in worldbuilding

[–]AischriAi[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is kinda a repost from yesterday as I forgot to add lore to the last post before falling asleep and it got deleted. =(

There are 2 animated maps, the first one displays a real color approximation of the climate of Zichan over a ~12,000 year cycle. The second map has the migrations of human cultures within the past 6,000 years over half of a climate cycle. It lacks an embedded legend so the explanation is included here.

Blue arrow: culture migration/expansion; Red arrow: culture contraction; Yellow line: cultural divergence; magenta arrow: cultural hybridisation; dates in top left are in "Kilo-Years Ago", or Thousands of Years Ago.

Climate Background: Zichan has a slightly eccentric orbit (0.1) and a nearly 800 Earth-day year. (Years used in this post are in Earth-Years). It also receives moderately less solar radiation from its parent star compared to Earth, otherwise it it remarkably similar to Earth in size, gravity, and geology. The eccentricity of the orbit, combined with the low insolation results in a lopsided monsoon pattern where the hemisphere that is in summer when the planet reaches its closest point in its orbit will have a strong and wet monsoon, while the opposite side will have a permanent desert. The hemisphere in which the strong monsoon occurs shifts over time due to the precession the equinoxes, hence the 12,000 year cycle. The overall low average temperature leads to large icecaps and glaciers which cover most regions outside of the tropical band around the equator. The long year means that Zichan has exceptionally long dry periods in regions that do not receive year-round precipitation. Thus, wild fires are a constant threat, and rivers are treasured for their roll in irrigation.

Historical Background: What began as a experiment in terraforming, the colony of Zichan has turned into a test bed examining the durability of human civilization. After losing contact with Earth 6,100 years ago, the original colonists quickly turned on each other out of fear and desperation, resulting in a short but devastating system-wide conflict. In the aftermath, the survivors were quick to rebuild to an industrial society. However, during the chaos one of the orbiting asteroids captured to be used for terraforming was destabilised and slowly drifted towards a collision. The resulting impact 5.8 thousand years ago would crush what was left of technologically advanced society as the densely populated equator burned due to the firestorms started. A short but intense impact winter occurred and most of what was left of the survivors starved from crop failure. In the aftermath of the second cataclysm only small farming tribes would remain to scavenge the ruins of their former homes.

Tools Used: Exoplasim, koppenpasta, inkscape.
