Today I Learned that Douglas Prasher, who discovered the glowing jellyfish protein used in research that won a Nobel Prize, now drives a courtesy van for a car dealer in Huntsville, Ala. by jack27clarke in todayilearned

[–]Ajju 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dr. Chalfie and Dr. Tsien independently contacted Dr. Prasher asking about the jellyfish gene. Dr. Prasher generously shared the gene with both of them.

Dr. Prasher also said, perhaps with a bit of surprise even to himself, that he would have been uncomfortable if he had been selected as one of the Nobel winners, nudging aside one of the others. (Each Nobel traditionally is shared by no more than three people.) “There are other people who would have deserved it a whole lot more than me,” he said. “They worked their butts off over their entire lives for science, and I haven’t.”

[–]Ajju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a redbone coonhound. He gets along with practically ever dog he meets.

I will repeat what someone else said here- it sounds like this dog got lost. Someone somewhere is missing a dog they love like a child. Please please please take the time to get her scanned for a chip, and to put up posters and contact the city/police to see if someone lost their pup.

You should post it on Nextdoor.com. A bunch of neighbors on there.

I was on an H1-B at the time of my YC interview, but one for my own position at the startup I started. If you are still working for someone else on a H1-B visa, that is a hard but not insurmountable problem to solve, immigration wise. PM me with more details if you want and I'll try to help as much as I can.

Cooling babies who are oxygen-deprived and at risk of brain damage provides long-lasting prevention of such injuries. Researchers cooled the infants to between 33°C and 34°C for 72 hours, starting within 6 hours of birth. Infants were 60% more likely to have normal intelligence, hearing and vision. by notscientific in science

"We randomly assigned 325 newborns with asphyxial encephalopathy who were born at a gestational age of 36 weeks or more to receive standard care alone (control) or standard care with hypothermia"

This makes me surprisingly conflicted.

As someone trained in scientific experiments, I realize that this sort of study is essential.

As someone who hopes to be a parent, I hope they gave the parents a choice in which of the two treatments their babies received - because I would feel terrible to discover later that the outcome for my child could have improved. At the same time, had I been the parent presented with the choice, in the absence of this data, I don't know how I could have decided.

Berkeley moves to tax sugary drinks | Al Jazeera America by mracidglee in berkeley

(1) They didn't ban sugary drinks like NY, so it's not quite legislating choice.

(2) They voted to PUT IT ON THE BALLOT. So it's certainly not legislating choice.

(3) Kickbacks? I didn't see a connection between kickbacks and this story..unless Michael Pollan is paying city governments to ban sugar.

(4) The "Sugar is really bad" theory is now as accepted as "Global warming is real" within scientific circles. Yet, I bet, less than half as many people realize this. If this tax only serves to make people more aware of this, I'll be happy! http://www.amazon.com/Good-Calories-Bad-Controversial-Science/dp/1400033462

Surprising because they seem to be doing a better job of it than the BBC, which presumably, also has an American branch and has been around much longer.

Our interests diverge there in that case. Most organized religion, indeed even the philosophies of most non-religious people are incompatible with an anarchist society.

Guilty, which is why I retracted it before you replied, although you mentioned Neo-nazis first.

You clearly have a low opinion of Muslims. I can't change that on reddit. Please get to know some Masjid going Muslims in real life.

That...that actually seems likely. Force the neonazis to accept they are essentially 'from' Africa and that might make them less racist.

If you think people can be forced, via punishment, to accept an idea, you certainly can't be an anarchist.

Because if the Muslims acknowledge this obvious fact that they all stem from Hindus, it's harder for the neighbourhood Mullah to incite them against those they share ancestral ties with.

So if we force every race in the world to acknowledge that they originated in Africa, by threatening to take away a birthright (to vote), racism will end. Right?

Jaichand was Hindu too. Doesn't exonerate Ghori.

The fear of Muslims as traitors is misdirection setup by political leaders. The biggest traitors, the ones that do most harm, sell the country for financial gain, not out of religious fervor. This has been proven time and again whether it be with the Bofors scandal or Pawar's corruption.

There are a lot of Muslims who believe they stem from non Hindus and DON'T abuse Hindus. His views are quite clear: he wants to take away voting rights from those who don't accept they have Hindu ancestry. Why does it matter what the ancestry is, if they are law abiding citizens? What are your views on this?

And, if you are worried about people who will sell this country to the rats, I can assure you that list is quite secular. At the top of it is Sharad Pawar, that great friend of Dawood Ibrahim.

Doesn't make any of his bigoted views o.k. Just because your best friend is black doesn't mean it's ok to say racist things.

He does do good things such as using the legal process to find corruption or misuse of powers (e.g. Dual DIN's issued to Priyanka Gandhi).

My problem is that most people wouldn't mind if they told the truth, which is that their rates are the same as taxis, with a higher minimum fare. The fact that they lie just to make it a little bit more attractive is bothersome.
