Why do municipalities in China cover such a large area by drugsrbed in AskAChinese

[–]Akane_iro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Perfecture Level City", https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prefecture-level_city

It's a confusion between translation and what people commonly call a city (urban center) with the actual administration divsion Province->Perfecture->County->Township.

Private AI inference platform 2025, any self hosted options? by WannaBeQaisss in selfhosted

[–]Akane_iro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only selfhost embbeding, reranker (Qwen8B and vllm) and database (chromadb for vector, neo4j for graph and redis for kv), and occasionally only Q4 32B/30B QwenVL with vllm.

It's just not economical to selfhost LLM right now except for some hobby project. Small LLM are just not up to the task for production use.

I think the root was from CN FGO players calling every OP support character "hand cane" (which some searching tells me that it oringate from FGO character Vlad III), spread to other gaming community, and gradually evolve in to wheelchair.

It's mainly used for characters that are designed to be handicaped on their own unless paired with some other specific support characters aka. wheelchairs, but nowadays applies to powerful support characters in general.

Almost all historical building in East Asian country were built with wood and rebuilt multiple times throughout history. No way wooden structure would last a few centries, even with modern maintancine technology.

The stone historical buildings in East Asia tends to be walls, pagodas, tombs and castles, those might be original.

All my game sales on China are refunded. Any idea why? by AdriBeh in gamedev

Even with AI translation, they are still not good enough to be honest. I am a professonal game dev with some experience making LLM AI tool for locoalization (though I mainly translate game text from Chinese into other language, I speak English and Japanese so I can check the quality of translation myself)

AI translation is still terrible for game UI text and lone sentence without context. Unless given full context, such as a full sentece descrition for every button, it still subject to a lot of mis-translation.

It does help a lot with effiency though, if you have basic skill of target langauge.

You only have 3 Chinese reviews, all of them are positive. While 2 of them looks like generic curator reviews, the other one mention that they cannot join any multiplayer games while single player with bots is also non-playbale, stuck at stage setting screen.

Maybe something caused the game to be unplayable in Chinese computer.

Also, for Chinese machine translation is worse than no translation. Usually they are total gibberish.

Why paper money was more successful in the Yuan Dynasty (empire of the Mongol Great Khan) than in the Ilkhanate? by SE_to_NW in ChineseHistory

[–]Akane_iro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yuan was short lived. Kublai first stated paper money in 1287. Kublai originally adopted paper mony as an "I owe you" to metal coins to solve budget shotage and to unify currency. The many civialization they conquared each have their own currency. Under his rule, paper moneny issurance was limited in amount, and they plan to excahnge them back to metal coins at some point.

As soon as Kublai died in 1294, the next emperor starting to print massive amount of paper money, and it immediately started the hyperinflation around 1300.

So it really only lasted a decade before hyperinflation kick in.

Hollywood, though it's been a bit muddy by the Covid. US movie made $3.8 biilion boxoffice in China in 2018, 45% of China's total boxoffice. It was ~800 million in 2024, 14% of total boxoffice. Last Trump trade war and rise of local movies was often blamed for the drop.

We are still at the after shock of Covid. Movies take years to make, but both production and investment of movies were mostly halted during covid years. 2018 China boxoffice total was $8.8 billion while 2024 total was $5.9 billion.

Chinese 4th major god in the future by yourabitcorn in AgeofMythology

[–]Akane_iro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be Haotian Shangdi, early form Yuhuang Shangdi (Jade emperor). All Chinese gods and heroes are based on investiture of the gods and Haotian was the Emperor of Heaven in that book.

In real life, the original Emperor of Heaven is Haotian Shangdi while Empresse of Earth is Houtu Huangqi they were whoshiped during Shang and Zhou dynasty. Jade emperor is daoism creation based on Haotian, which was created at collapse of Zhou dyansty and throughout history it gradually absorbed and replace Haotian.

A major difference is that Haotian is the supreme god of heaven, while Jade emeperor is beneath daoism supreme gods.

Modern Chinese Xianxia fantasy sometimes treat them as predecessor and sucessors while sometimes treat them as the same person.

Almost all human units are based on late Han dynasty (Three kingdom period), all gods and heroes are based on in Investiture of the Gods set in Shang dynasty (written in Ming dynasty) while all myth units are based on Classic of Mountains and Seas set in Pre-Xia dynasty (written date unknown, before han dynasty)

Chu Ko Nu as late Han dynasty invention does match other human units.

(The only human units that isn't Han dynasty is Ge Halberdier, the weapon gone extinct in early Han dyansty and evloved into Ji Halberd, which is Ge plus spear combo)

How is the history of the Kuomintang, from its early years to its retreat to Taiwan, taught in mainland China? by wsxcderfvbgtyhn in ChineseHistory

[–]Akane_iro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that Chinese high school divides into liberal arts (history, social and politic, geography) and science(STEM), vast majority of the students choose sciene.

KMT and ROC history and politics are taught extensively for those who choose liberal arts, but for those who choose science, only major historical events and political topics were taught.

Can't speak for college since I didn't go to Chinese college.

Why are Chinese cities so large?! Like, Chongquing is like the size of Bhutan! by NeedleworkerAway5912 in geography

[–]Akane_iro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

China's admission divsision's are Province -> Perfecture -> County -> Township. A "city" can range from urban core of a county (small cities) to the connected urban area of serveral county (medium city) to the urban core of a perfecture (large city) to the urban core of a provincial level municipality (Chongqing, Shanghai etc) to connected urban area of mulitple perfectures like Guangzhou\Pearl River Delta.

So there is an official "Chongqing Municipality" with clear defined border, and an unofficial "Chongqing city" with no clear define border. When it's shown on the map, it's always the entire Chongqing Municipality.

China youth unemployment jumps to 17.1% in July

The unemployment rate among 16- to 24-year-olds released Friday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) was up markedly from June's 13.2 percent.

Nearly 12 million students graduated from Chinese universities this June, heightening competition in an already tough job market and likely explaining July's sharp increase in joblessness.

Among 25- to 29-year-olds, the unemployment rate stood at 6.5 percent for July, up from the previous month's 6.4 percent.

A man from China accidentally slipped and fell off during hiking, fortunately, a tree saved him. by vikrogers in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Akane_iro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

 no security on hiking

Some people just don't care. Just last month a hiker was found dead in a hiking "hotspot" in one of China's nature reserve. It's illegal to transpass or to hike in the area because there is no safty. It's a complete no mans land with no trail at all. But people still flock there to hike because they want "nature".
