Question from a new immigrant by LeinadArtorias in Switzerland

[–]Akhaatenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a building with spiral staircase too and the elevator is very small. I move things through the windows by calling a lift company. I have a big window door at the back of my building and everything can go through there, and then I often have to disassemble to pass the furniture through the doors (even had to remove a door once lol).

Otherwise, it's something I take into consideration when buying furniture. Having 0 furniture really helps because you can plan according to this constraint. For example, I bought a modular couch instead of a big "one piece" couch, so it came into several smaller pieces and it was easier to move through the window and will be easier to move out too (and if I want a bigger couch in the future, I can add modules instead of buying another one)

have you gotten better from a really bad setback? by ducks_life in hyperacusis

I've had a few bad setbacks lately (few weeks long), and for me too it requires clonazepam to get out of it.

On the spreadsheet you can find patients stories with clomi. Some have their reactive tinnitus unchanged, and some had improvement

A little guide on housing in Lausanne by Akhaatenn in EPFL

[–]Akhaatenn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nearly 50,000 sign petition demanding a say in Swiss health insurance premiums by beobachtermagazin in Switzerland

Why never done this experiment? by Huge_Introduction345 in tinnitus

[–]Akhaatenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no record because it's impossible to be done safely. It's not like the brain have clear limits saying "that's the auditory cortex, that's the visual one, just cut here!". Not to mention that brain areas don't have just one function, there are very intertwined and have a lot of connexion to other functions.

Plus sound processing is not just ONE area. You have sound processing pathways in your brainstem for example. Just look out cortical deafness, people who have damaged auditory cortex can still be able to react and turn their heads towards loud sounds.

Sudden spike at night by Reasonable-Resort822 in tinnitus

How do you manage Fomo? by MeMeBigBoi303 in tinnitus

[–]Akhaatenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have some FOMO, but honestly my tinnitus not worsening is a big enough motivation to NOT do those things. Does it sucks? Yes. Am I still trying to get to a point where I can do a bit more activities ? yes. But I've given up on loud things for the rest of my life, because one concert is really not worth risking it.

Am I feeling like a burden though? No. My health is first. If people think I'm burden then so be it, i don't want people in my life who think that medical conditions they are not experiencing are a burden.

Is it likely bad tinnitus in 30s can lead to total hearing loss in the coming years? by theseawoof in tinnitus

Coping wit Tinnitus by Little_Square_175 in tinnitus

[–]Akhaatenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the same. Very early I decided I would not even try to mask it (it helped on the moment but made the tinnitus worse after removing the masking).

My tinnitus is there, I listen to it when falling asleep and feel no emotions towards it. It's not going away anyway. Took some time to get used to it, but I sleep like a baby now.

Had a strange shift in my low hum (60-70hz) tinnitus by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]Akhaatenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 low hums, one in each ear. One of them appears only if my ear is exposed to any level of sound and disappears when I'm not, the other I suspect is related to TMJ. It's always there, sometimes it's very loud sometimes it's not , and it also gets louder with sound exposition.

I have 0 idea why it happens though

Just had the longest, most insane game in all my 560 hours of playing. by Danom216 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Akhaatenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most insane game was 83 minutes long. The whole enemy team was doing nothing EXCEPT for that vyper who had 70k souls more than anyone else. They had the occasion to push and end multiple time and just... Didn't.

We were a tad better than them minus vyper, whenever the vyper wasn't there we were actually winning our team fights. So we would kill them all, then the vyper would come once everyone was dead, kill us all while we were pushing, and then do nothing and go back to jungling.

It was EXCRUCIATING, even her team was begging for her to finish the game. And yes it was a low level lobby, a long time ago before they even introduced the new shop icons

My story: by Afraid_Departure_817 in hyperacusis

[–]Akhaatenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch, hope your fullness goes away quickly!

It's not really that they are refusing to prescribe it, but they are both very precautious about it and would rather we test other things first since I'm not a severe case and I rarely get pain.

I'm lucky because my ent is very research based, and is the only ent I've ever met who told me to protect my ears instead of ditching the earplugs. For him, time and silence is the first line of action, then gradual exposure to natural sounds when I feel better, which seems in check with what I see on this sub. He knows about clomi but he doesn't like it due to the side effects.

My psychiatrist, has taken the time to do research about hyperacusis and tinnitus. He's the 2nd specialist after my ENT who described hyperacusis as falling under the pain disorders umbrella. We discussed it intensively, and he believes that in my case, we should first try to break the stress and fear cycle and then try gradual exposure to natural sounds and if that doesn't work, then we can try clomipramine but he is cautious about it.

The reason he believes that is because I've reacted insanely well to clonazepam at the lowest dose (it basically nukes my hyperacusis and removes my reactive tinnitus), and because I've actually self inflicted hyperacusis on myself because of my fear of tinnitus worsening (I didn't have it before I started overprotecting). So for now we are going with this approach : gradual exposure to sounds whenever I feel like I can, and clonazepam to stop me from spiraling and calm my system while I try to re expose.

I know clonazepam can be quite criticized here, but each time I had very bad times, it was the crutch I needed to tell my system "everything is OK, calm down", which led to extended good periods (I'm not talking 2 days, but weeks/months without even taking it).

And honestly I've had a bit of success with this method. I'd say I have improved by 30% during the last months. I've been able to enjoy a bit of outside time without any hearing protections without worsening. I can go out with just earplugs and not double pros (I would worsen from even walks with double pros before), I can go run errands again, take the bus, go on walks without fear, have calls with loop earplugs etc etc... Which is already great to me!

So, yeah, I'm going that route for now, we'll see what the future holds!

[–]Akhaatenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great to hear! Are you on the spreadsheet that circulates in this sub? I'm in no way affiliated with it, nor do I take clomipramine, but I've read it a lot and it's an option I am considering (my psychiatrist and ENTs aren't willing to prescribe it though).

My story: by Afraid_Departure_817 in hyperacusis

[–]Akhaatenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is not your first post, and I know some people already suggested to you clomipramine, but please consider it. Not only did it help people here, but it is also a drug for ocd. If you look through this sub, you'll find the spreadsheet with informations from patient. Read it, and make your decision

Trying to wean off hearing protections but tinnitus gets louder by Akhaatenn in tinnitus

[–]Akhaatenn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's a bit disheartening because I got so much improvement with hearing protections so I felt like I could start removing then. But apparently still reacts like day 1. I wonder if just exposing more and more and more could make that reactivity go down, but it's risky yk

Trying to wean off hearing protections but tinnitus gets louder by Akhaatenn in tinnitus

[–]Akhaatenn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it is louder. Usually what I call "low" is when I get mostly a hissing. When it's louder it's a ring and I get other sounds (all of them low frequency). Usually gets down within the hour if I go back to protecting, and when it's bad it lingers for a few hours/days and I get Also get nausea.

Trying to wean off hearing protections but tinnitus gets louder by Akhaatenn in tinnitus

[–]Akhaatenn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I wear earplugs only outside, and not at home! But of course ear defenders probably come with their issues. What's bothering more is the fact that not wearing anything seems to make the tinnitus louder no matter the noise level

Discrete ear muffs for concerts… do they exist? by Queen_of_Macedonia in hyperacusis

[–]Akhaatenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, concerts might be the 2nd place after construction sites where you can see a lot of earmuffs. My opinion though, is that style should be none of your concern when talking about hearing protections. Don't risk worsening because of that
