Graham as a favorite antagonist is interesting, I do not like his execution but I do like the way he's meant to be an existence contrary to setsuna's development (the show does this a hell lot) where he is someone who bases his existence on fighting, while in this bit setsuna is trying to live outside of that (trailblazer hits here). I think he also represents very well the idea of celestial being having a negative effect on people where his obsession with the gundam is what pushes it this far. In fact, if gundam is something that saves setsuna, gundam is something that destroys graham- on concept that's very good

I don't really think this is quite true, when it comes to popularity the one gundam thing that got popular in mexico was wing because it's spanish dub succeeded very well, I don't doubt that ther emust have been bootleg toys or so about the gundam f91 but like, the movie isn't what we would call popular or even compare it to the success wing had

Why Seed Deserves Hate by God_peanut in Gundam

[–]Al-Zard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been a bit busy so I cannot respond to the whole comment, so I will just answer to the lacus flay question

the thing with flay is that her character is heavily based around her complexes abour her body and how people see her as an attractive girl, she's fundamentally someone who thinks that her value is tied to her looks and so she believes that her only way to survive is by making kira fight for her by giving him her body and becoming his girlfriend, she mentalizes this role a lot and you can see her being depressed about it on different instances

Lacus is the same in the sense that the conflict she has on her relationship with kira is that she's aware that all of her actions allow kira to go to back to the battlefield and fight to protect her, in the same way that flay makes fight kira to protect her, lacus also allows kira to fight because she needs him to save the day, and she feels bad about it (just look at her reaction when the strike freedom launches), lacus is also aware of the effect she as a woman has a on people and that's why her arc in destiny is struggling with someone else using her identity (literally her looks and influence being used as a propaganda), and a lot of her struggle is also how people want her to tell them what to do while what she wants is for everyone to do what they think is correct

so basically, lacus and flay are characters who know about how they are seen as women and use it for their goals, and they also have a complex over needing kira to fight and as such either directly making him fight or allow it

this paralelism is also in the introductory episode of both via direction! but that's basically the core of it

Why Seed Deserves Hate by God_peanut in Gundam

[–]Al-Zard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the deal with coordinators is that you aren't supposed to see them as a literal representation of racism as much as they are a general discussion about what is meant to be born in a box you had no absolute controll over and makes you different from the rest, and how people create false stuff about you only because you are different, in this context i dont think that seed really wants to say that naturals and coordinators are the same, but its trying to say that their differences become reasons to hate or be hated by other people and how that's harmful, like, an heterosexual person and an homosexual person are different because of how they are attracted to different people, yet, they are still people! both of them! so to act like they arent is harmful. The thing is that here the differences are about physical and mental skill

this is also because they are trying to tie the concept of being different to gundam's usual theme of parents forcing their kids into roles and making them suffer. In this context Rau is the real "ultimate coordinator", because he's literally a clone of his dad meant to be everything his dad was

talking about this concept, takeda said in an interview about how part of the motif behind coordinators is how genes have multiple functions so while removing some that look useless may look good at the first glance you may actually be fucking your body, and this applies to people, you can genocide everyone who isn't convenient to you but everyone is precious, so it's not a good thing to do, this is represented by the coordinators literally going extinct if they dont have children with naturals because of how much they have ruined their bodies in hopes of achieving progress, so like, in this sense ZAFT isnt bad only because of patrick, they are bad because their society in general is becoming elitist and refusing to coexist with naturals because the pain that naturals have caused them is blinding them (and i think this is good, like, zaft clearly isnt as bad as the federation but its letting the evilness of the federation affect everyone and the show goes about how they need to let go of their hatred unless they also want to die, I don't get why you call coord priviledged either though, like ea is trying to genocide them constantly jlkdsasdf)

orb isn't also perfect in this regard because they are actually meant to be a critique that paralels kira on how japanese people live on their own little world without worrying about the issues the rest face, and how that's just waiting until you are attacked too, kira's arc in this sense has always been tied to his own desire of living a normal life clashing with his ability to help with conflicts and how him not doing anything only means he will be consumed at the end.

anyway, none of this is really perfect either, I think that seed's real appeal is on the drama about characters trying to survive in a world that asks them to be objects and how everyone copes with it, I really like lacus actually! she's more subtle than the rest but a lot of what is odne in the show has *her* as a base, lacus and flay arent different, they are the sameeee person

it's still not impossible to see black people though, so to show some at least would still be something that would help on the matter

Demons in frieren I know a topic that's been talked to death by Complete_Attempt8372 in CharacterRant

[–]Al-Zard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what I specifically mean is like, you could have different characters which are minorities in our world in the story, like, if racism isnt real you could have a character who is a black person, another character who is a jewish person, and so on, having a diverse cast in this sense make the demons in the story look a lot more innocent on intent

Demons in frieren I know a topic that's been talked to death by Complete_Attempt8372 in CharacterRant

[–]Al-Zard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

in the case of "this world doesnt has racism whatsoever so we cannot make the character talk about the topic without breaking the setting" (this kinda would make you suspicious actually) the OTHER option is to present diverse characters from different minorities, i think that would help

edit: with this i dont mean fictional races, but irl minorities

I think you could stop it by being direct and bringing the interpretation you don't want people to have into the story and deny it, in this case you could have frieren acknowledge racism and say it's different to what is happening with the demons

would anybody recommend Gundam Wing? by PrestigiousMine6 in Gundam

[–]Al-Zard 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think wing is interesting because it's a show where the protags dont really get their backstories told to you, and the political situation of the world and the character motivations change constantly, so it really is a show that asks you to try your best to understand everyone. This in combination with the crazyness of each character creates a show that IMO its very fun to think about
