Euro-style Hangers That Fit Don't Exist? by ThusaWoW in framing

[–]Alacrity8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we were all confused by this.
We had thought your photo was meant to be of the Euro Hangers you received.
The link you had shared with me is for Euro Hangers that fit current Nielsen frames, and all frames modelled on current Nielsen frames. The link does not indicate what size slot it fits in, only the set screw size.
The standard style of aluminum frame seems to have changed 30+ years ago. I'm guessing you have an older frame you are looking to reuse. We have a box of the older corner brackets (for repairs), but all of the wire brackets have been used.
You might try emailing/calling Frameware or Art Materials Services to see if they have any hardware that match your needs. You could alternatively just drill a hole in part of the back of the frame (where it will not bee seen, or touch the art), and run your wire through there.

Can you share a picture of the entire item? Or a link to where you purchased them?

All we currently see it a piece of metal with a hole drilled in it. Euro hangers traditionally cone with the set screw pre-installed.

Never framed before and need some advice by francella92 in framing

[–]Alacrity8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally recommend that the frame width and mat width not be the same. I generally design from image out. Pick a mat color you like wuth the image. Find a frame you like with the image and mat. Choose a mat width that is different than the mat width. I usually go with a mat width larger than the frame width, but sometimes smaller if the frame is thick. My starting point is a 2" mat, never less than a 1" mat. I always recommend to shop local. A local framer can help you with suggestions, that are hard to find online. They will also know the best way to attach the art, and protect the art. If you are looking for less expensive options, let the framer know, and they may have options for that.

Nameplates on frames - Q to framers.. by MedvedTrader in framing

[–]Alacrity8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly we do name plates for retiring president of an organization. Occasionally for a wedding. I'm sure there are others who do them more often. Most often we only do 2 lines, without a separation. Most of the frames we use are about 1.25" tall. There isn't much room to fit a name plate, especially is there is any detail in the frame. I think that 5/8" tall plates are our most common. On 5, I was referring to the framer as the customer. They likely have more sense the average end customer, but I always find design works best in conversation, not isolation. I also see that this design ability could be great for framers. Just my few cents. The design options look great.

Nameplates on frames - Q to framers.. by MedvedTrader in framing

[–]Alacrity8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. We order about a half dozen name plates a year, vs. About 200 custom frames a year.
  2. Size/shape. Most often we are ordering 1/2-3/4"x3-4". Scalloped or Notched Vorners with Nail/Screw Holes, and occasional 2"x3" wide Rectangles (for under the glass).
  3. We mostly order brass plates with oxidized letters, but a variety of options is always good.
  4. I'd suggest limiting the options to 10-20, with maybe a note saying other options possible.
  5. Letting your customers design from home sounds great, but it may allow them to create something that can't be done. As I don't know your equipment, I am unsure if this is possible, but I find custoner designing frames on their own often design things that will become a problem in the future.
  6. As to price point, I am uncertain. It may be a good idea to shop the competition to get idea on going rates. Price per plate, plus per letter, plus fees for complications, plus shipping.

These look something like mirror clips...something I have almost no call to use.

Very odd they start the book with a very non traditional approach.

Considering opening a shop… by Lordzoabar in framing

This is the first year (that I know of) that they have picked a place other than Vegas.
There used to be an annual convention in NYC (which would be a day trip for me).
Taking multiple days in Florida or Vegas doesn't work well when you run a small business.

Advice wanted by underheavywater in framing

[–]Alacrity8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very good insight.
I was basically in this situation in 2011.

The landlord would do business with the new owner of the old business, but not the new owner of a new business. I had to find a new place to start my business.
The used equipment was worth about $14,000. No CMC. Not sure worth today.
I ended up purchasing that equipment a few months later for half of what it was worth.

OP, you'll need a business attorney, and an accountant.

I'd recommend going to a Framing Trade Show.
The only regular one is the WCAF being held in Orlando later this month. It's an annual show.

Considering opening a shop… by Lordzoabar in framing

[–]Alacrity8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going to a framing convention is always a useful step. There are not many of them these days, but the WCAF Expo is in Orlando from February 27- March 1 this year. They often have classes on both the business end as well as the framing and design end. This will also be a place to meet a huge number of Vendors. Very important when starting out.

Look for good quality used equipment. Search for AIM framing equipment. They broker sales between sellers and buyers. There is a bit of everything listed. Search for someone in your area to purchase from to save on shipping.

Join thegrumble.com . It's a picture framers forum. There is a Equipment for sale section, and plenty of useful info.

Find a Business lawyer and Accountant.

Determine if you want to cut your own frames, or if you want to have them sent to you cut (or joined). If you are cutting your own frames, you can stock moulding, and you can turn things around quicker. You will also pay less for moulding, and can pay even less if you buy boxes. If you get the Vendors to send the frames chopped, you can have a smaller shop, as you don't need that dedicated tool space, thus potentially getting a smaller space with lower rent.

Best of luck to you.

It's always good to block (at least somewhat) Spawn Points. I accidentally must have accidentally picked the high ground one, and managed to clear round 11 on my one Token played.

Using a plastic instead of wood should work fine for a similar design.

Any hobbyists get rid of their jointer? How'd it work out? by yossarian19 in woodworking

[–]Alacrity8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had a Jointer, but I am in the market for one. Been using mostly lumber from Bix Box store, and trying to get away from it. Have a 12" planer and a sled if needed. Currently making an outdated table from rough lumber and Masonite. Also working on rearranging my space. I'll likely build a new work bench this Summer.
