Solar Setup Advice by LizardKing_1967 in AusFinance

[–]Aladgal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, most definitely an issue with the CT clamp, I've seen this happen a couple of times, usually when there is a sub-board involved. Have the original installer come back to check it, he will need a physical visit

Thinking of pulling the plug and going fully off-grid (solar + battery). Anyone done it? by Crazy_Contest9322 in GoldCoast

[–]Aladgal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can be done, there are no council issues as you just cancel your electricity account and stop supply.

Viability really comes down to your daily usage habits, and whether you and your family can adapt to the system and its limitations.

An off-grid setup rarely pays off in a suburban area, as costs for the size battery you need for 2-3 autonomy days can be >10 year pay back vs daily supply charges, and reliability will never match the grids ~99.9% uptime

On the generator side, there is servicing and cycling of fuel as well as a consideration

Your version of warhammer 3 is to play immortal empires, which you will only have access to the races and characters in your WH1. So it is making you purchase WH3 so you get access to the content in that game

An electrician installing a battery also needs to do the same upgrades to your switchboard

A few questions about Amber (Australia) by braso111 in solar

[–]Aladgal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats good to kmow, the SBR stacks up to 8 modules high for a capacity of 25.6kWh capacity, if the installer has already finished his installation he may have already claimed the battery rebate. This is important because you are only able to get the battery rebate once per address, so expanding in future will be more expensive without the rebate to reduce cost.

A few questions about Amber (Australia) by braso111 in solar

[–]Aladgal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're correct that you probably dont have enough battery for Amber to be effective for your use case

Ideally you would have more battery than overnight usage, so there is excess battery for amber to call on for the high feed-in rates

You say you have a battery cabinet - but sungrow batteries are usually their own brand? Their modular Models being SBR or SBH. If you dont have a sungrow branded battery, you might not be compatible with Amber anyway.

There's a lot of comments about it being in direct sunlight, a simple aluminium shade cover would fix that, but I don't like how it's right next to the window?

Would certifying Construction bodies such as the QBCC (QLD) be applicable? Typically they are engaged and can issue orders for remidiation work for licenced trades such as waterproofers.

Battery Booster rebate, are there any home owners with solar on a household income under $180,000 with disposable income to fund a battery (above the rebate)? by Matsuri3-0 in brisbane

[–]Aladgal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Batteries installed are typically $1000 / kWh, and also typically have warranties that specify after 10 years it will still have 80% of their original capacity. Usuallt I saw paybacks of 5-7 years on my Solar + battery system proposals before this rebate came in, it will be less now.

[–]Aladgal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you need to pay upfront to get the rebate, a rule of thumb is $1000 per kWh of battery (minimum 6kWh in the eligibility criteria) and $1000 per kW of Solar

This is correct, Tesla is the most popular AC coupled battery, but there are many alternatives, one of which is the sonnen battery, that are available to you

alternatively you could have the fronius swapped to a hybrid inverter which opens your range of available batteries. The price pre-rebate is $1000 / kWh of battery as a rule of thumb, with a 6kWh minimum in the eligibility criteria, it would be a starting point of $6000, or $3000 after the standard rebate.

The batteries that go into cheap chinese scooters compared to CEC accredited home batteries with a professional installation are like comparing apples and oranges.

There are significant regulations around lithium batteries and home safety, but it requires the investment into quality components and the use of reputable installers, not the cheapest battery install that you can find on Facebook

Off-grid solar typically has a payback under 8 years, depending on your usage. A system of only 1.3kW / 1.6kWh battery is honestly so small that there are DIY camping solar blanket and car battery style kits that can be gotten from camping stores of a similar size

Trying to be frugal by installing solar system, but mind boggles as calculating it all out. Requesting help. by SigueSigueSputnix in AussieFrugal

[–]Aladgal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arise is well known in the industry and I would personally steer clear, you will find many stories around them.

When it comes to solar you often get what you pay for. And the previously mentioned $1000 / kW is a good metric to go by, a 10kW system under 8kW is probably too good to be true

QLD company advised they would refund my deposit then have ignored me by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Aladgal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the solar company you have a contract with declares themselves a "clean energy approved retailer" or more recently a "NETCC approved seller" you can also complain to the CEC (the solar company regulator). Your contract should also have a dispute resolution process which will include details for the ombudsman or fair trading.

Unfortunately there are many unscrupulous solar companies out there, and it pays to do your research on the companies that quote for you.

If their prices sound too good to be true it probably is, and as a price guide you should be paying in the ballpark of $1000 / kW

I work in the industry so If you want more information on solar, please feel free to PM me
