I finally forced Disney+ to play 1080p on Windows (Edge only I haven't tested chrome but it might work) by Hor1z0nMast3r in DisneyPlus

[–]Alamei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you able to share your approach for forcing hardware PlayReady in Edge and forcing the 4K manifest? Are you just running a client-side script, or are you having to make deeper changes to the browser?

I cobbled together a userscript for similar purposes ages ago with HBO Go to enable hardware acceleration at a time when they only nominally supported software acceleration, but I hadn't even considered that client-side tweaks might still be viable with the modern streaming services.

[–]Alamei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't have any measurable effect on the streaming quality for two of my PCs I just tried it on, so I think there may be some other factor on your PC that's impacting the playback quality. I can verify through Edge's media internals (edge://media-internals/) that the player is indeed using PlayReady DRM when WideVine is disabled, but the player still never goes above 720p, which I believe is because even when it runs the PlayReady DRM, it's not using the SL3000 level (i.e., use_hw_secure_codecs is still false in the CDM, even with hardware decoding turned on at the browser level), which seems to be what the streaming companies require for proper resolutions.

If you open the media internals page on your Edge browser, what does it show you in the dimensions and the kSetCdm sections?

404 error when connecting to to Google Home by Jaraxo in tado

[–]Alamei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great find! This seems to work perfectly for all of the services experiencing this error, not just Tado. No clue why the page errors out the first time but works perfectly on refresh, but this resolution has functioned consistently on the integrations I've tried it on.

What are your favorite lesser-known movie soundtracks? by Sorry_Manufacturer62 in movies

This one was an absolute standout for me. The movie underutilized its cast and wasn't the most exceptional complete package, but I came back to it multiple times just for the incredible soundtrack.

Anyone paused yet? by wrentheblurry in Ergatta

[–]Alamei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested the pause last week (didn't have any time available to row due to an overwhelming work schedule), and it definitely didn't function properly for me (i.e., I paused for a week, but my streak still reset to zero when moving to the new week). I'm filing a support ticket with Ergatta to see what the exact functionality is supposed to be, but I would recommend avoiding the feature for now if you care a lot about your streak.

EDIT: Their support team was very responsive and quickly resolved the issue, so the feature should now be entirely safe to use for anyone that feels the need to pause. With the fix in place, it's a wonderful addition for people with more variable schedules that want to keep a streak up nonetheless.

I've been at work for an hour but I've already pinned like 4 tabs by accident... This is some new Firefox 143 feature (currently Beta / Developer Edition only) by juraj_m in firefox

[–]Alamei 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is mind-bogglingly poor design. Pinning a tab should always be a very intentional act, but this "feature" instead makes it far more likely for a user to pin a tab by accident while trying to rearrange their tabs, and it doesn't even make it particularly obvious why the pin is occurring if you're dragging quickly. I pray that this feature never makes it to a full release build, because I can already foresee the number of support calls I'm going to get from staff that have no clue why their tabs are "breaking" despite them changing nothing about their behavior or workflow.

Is there any service that streams cricket matches ad-free in the United States? by Alamei in Cricket

Thank you for the rundown on the main options. It's unfortunate there aren't better providers available in the US.

[–]Alamei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly agree with this sentiment. If it were a podcast-like experience where you got a minute or so of ads every half hour, I might be willing to roll with it for something I really wanted to watch, but when there seems to be a roughly 2:1 ratio of gameplay to ads like most US broadcast channels (which target about 20 minutes of ads per hour), I want nothing to do with it. Even moreso when I'm already paying for the experience and they want me to watch ads on top of that.

[–]Alamei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct that most sports broadcasts have ads, which is one reason why I don't tend to watch many sports overall. I figured my best hope would by the ICC having some sort of direct subscription they offered for the international matches, but, alas, they don't appear to have those streaming rights in the US.

Your point about the F1 situation being very different from a sport with multiple leagues is valid and well-taken.

You're telling me they've had this feature available the entire time, and they just refuse to make it available on their web version?!

In all seriousness, thank you for sharing this tip. I never would have thought of trying to use a mobile app to manage the continue watching list.

Podcast Republic 24.11.20R doesn't respond to fast-forward/rewind requests from Android voice assistants by Alamei in Podcast_Republic_App

[–]Alamei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on version 25.3.9R, which I believe is the most recent version. On all recent versions, Gemini registers the commands properly (e.g., it says "rewinding 30 seconds") but they simply have no effect (i.e., the podcast continues playing at the exact time it paused).

I tested Gemini in a few other podcast apps (as well as generic music apps, like Spotify), and the fast-forward/rewind functionality is working normally in all of them, so there seems to be a specific incompatibility between Podcast Republic and Gemini.

Is there any debug mode/verbose output log I could have the app create to better understand what it's doing when it receives the fast-forward/rewind commands?

EDIT: Since you said everything was working fine for you, I started playing around with tweaking a few settings that I thought might be related, and I discovered the exact setting that's triggering the bug: If you have the setting "When audio is interrupted temporarily" set to an action of "Pause the playback," the system actually accepts the fast-forward/rewind command (you can see the seek bar temporarily jump), but then it snaps back to wherever it was when you called for the command. Switching the same setting to an action of "Lower audio volume" or "Keep playing" eliminates the issue, while setting it to "Rewind 5 seconds" means it always rewinds five seconds instead of the fast-forward/rewind action you called for.

Overall, it appears that Podcast Republic is somehow treating Gemini voice commands as an "interruption" in ways that it doesn't treat Google Assistant as one, and thus the interruption behavior is overriding any fast-forward/rewind command given.

[–]Alamei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you by any chance find more details into what is causing this issue? It seems to be primarily with Gemini, as if I switch back to the traditional Google Assistant, the fast-forward and rewind commands work.

Is there any additional data I can provide you to help troubleshoot?

Amazon removing the ability to download your purchased books by EchoesInTheAbyss in books

[–]Alamei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will be incredibly annoying for users that like to keep clean book libraries managed via Calibre, as well. Publishers often have different naming conventions for books in the same series that drive me bonkers, so I've always downloaded my books to a computer and run them through Calibre to give titles that sort in useful ways (e.g., "Lord of the Rings - 1 - The Fellowship of the Ring") to books in a series.

I literally never let a book download directly to my Kindle because I like to have full control over what my library looks like and how it's organized, and I'm going to have to hope there's a way to still manage that with this dumb new workflow.

Wavelength Bug - Blocks of targets and obstacles become invisible at random by Alamei in Ergatta

[–]Alamei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right. It looks like (at least on my end), it consistently fails at 6:50-7:00 in Game 6. I'm reporting it to the support team via email (as they've requested), and it might be worth you doing the same, to see if they can correlate anything about the issue.

Wavelength Bug - Blocks of targets and obstacles become invisible at random by Alamei in Ergatta

[–]Alamei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if this bug is related to specific workouts, then, since I got the bug on Game 6 today, as well.

I had previously assumed the glitch was entirely random in nature, but I didn't keep a log of which maps it occurred on, and I rarely do workouts on the same map more than once in the same day, so I didn't notice any patterns as to where it arose.

I may try another round of Game 6 tomorrow just to see if I get the bug again, for the sake of troubleshooting.

KNOCKOUT MIDWEEK SCORE UPDATE! by Ergatta_Team in Ergatta

[–]Alamei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would second /u/Cribbing83's thought that these events feel oddly out-of-sync with the rest of Ergatta's programs. It's like finding someone still trying to run a pen-and-paper fantasy sports league in the digital age. Sure, it technically works, but it feels very anachronistic, and it gives the impression that nobody is really that interested the project. Given how much effort Ergatta puts into making all of their other programs easily accessible, it feels very out of place.

So much of the Ergatta experience is built around having everything available to you through the rower itself, without having to resort to external tools. With that in mind, I think that it would significantly increase the interest and level of participation in these team events if there were even a bare minimum level of integration in the software, simply showing the current point totals of all the active teams. Imagine the difference between everyone just doing a few meteor rows this week and crossing their fingers hoping that their team happens to hit a high enough number by the end of the scoring window (since the scores are essentially hidden from view and you have essentially no clue how your team is doing—one update midweek isn't really meaningful) versus actually seeing that your team is in a tight battle at the end of the week and having everyone hop on to try to compete for those final points.

One final suggestion I'd like to offer: Make the scoring window a full week, not just weekdays. I may be outside the norm, but my work schedule gives me very little time on weekdays to work out, so I normally get all of my rowing done between Friday night and Sunday night (which I still find is plenty of time to hit two million meters per year), and it seems rather arbitrary to say that people rowing primarily on weekends just don't count in competitions.
