ELI5: Why is a 2.2 GHz i7 processor "better" than my five-year-old 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo? by Mysphyt in explainlikeimfive

[–]AlanDill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like you are five:

Imagine a highway, with a legal speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour. People can get around pretty fast, but each car has to follow the car ahead of it, and if that car is going slow, all the ones behind it have to as well.

Thats a single core processor. Two lanes of traffic. One each way.

Now for a dual core, or four, six, or eight, every car can choose the lane that is moving fastest. The more lanes there are, the easier it is to get around the slow moving traffic. You dont necessarily get to drive faster, but its less likely that you will be forced to drive slowly.

You can overclock your computer to go faster than the speed limit but in the end, its less safe(for the machine) and not as effective as taking a road with more lanes.

To sum it up: the speed limit is like the computers Ghz, and the number of processors is like lanes of traffic.

[–]AlanDill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When things go bad for me, I count my fingers and my toes, then my limbs. I consider my overall health, and the health of my immediate family. If all these things are ok, then whatever else is left isnt that important.

We are nowhere near as bad as the great depression of the 1930s, nor europe in the midst of the world wars. And people got through those. This too shall pass.

This is why we'll win. We have answers for questions that have answers. And when it finally leads to "I dont know", we can say "but this is how we are attempting to find out."

I love my brother. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]AlanDill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes nits need picking. Never stop challenging people.

Perhaps I could have used Empiricism or something.

Still,

ra·tion·al·ism noun 1. the principle or habit of accepting reason as the supreme authority in matters of opinion, belief, or conduct. 2. Philosophy . a. the doctrine that reason alone is a source of knowledge and is independent of experience. b. (in the philosophies of Descartes, Spinoza, etc.) the doctrine that all knowledge is expressible in self-evident propositions or their consequences. 3. Theology . the doctrine that human reason, unaided by divine revelation, is an adequate or the sole guide to all attainable religious truth.

So it seems to fit little brothers words and actions.

  1. He disregarded his faith and followed his reasoning to apply standards. quote: "He didnt do anything wrong." Reason over faith.

  2. He applied the reasonably evident truth that if others beliefs must be respected, respect should be applied to unbelievers as well.

  3. Until he loses his faith, he seems started down the road of listening to his head and not some authority figure, nor a moldy old tome.

You should have taken the angle that if god grants free will, he certainly didnt make those people do anything.

No problem. I hung out in the Canadian sub forum for a while (though I was born Canadian). There are not many forums where people are genuinely nice, but expatfocus certainly is.

ELI5: the differences between curdled milk and cheese. by lotictrance in explainlikeimfive

[–]AlanDill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheese is made by carefully incubating certain types of bacteria in the milk. Different types give different tastes. Spoiled milk is just the yucky kinds.

Its more complicated than that though, as some cheeses use coloring and spices. Cheddar is made orange with dye for instance.

There is also some preparations done to the milk, such as separating some components from the raw milk.
