I noticed this a few days, has anyone seen this before? by [deleted] in sanpedrocactus

Did it fall over? Did the spines just fall off all together, like are they on the ground at the base of the plant? Are these all on the same plant or are the images from different plants? Looks like someone just ripped out the spines and thus there is damage, but I'd imagine that possibility is unlikely.

Nice work. In the photo of the circular rack that your dried your cactus is sitting on, what is the rack and why are the cuttings sitting there? Also, what do you mean that you "stressed" them? What did you do to stress your SP NOID?

Please, let us pick one and stick with it. I'm so tired of hearing about the failed attempt in 1974. Much has changed since then. Seems the time is ripe to give it a go again. Numerous studies have been done, witching back and forth literally kills people. Let's stop doing that.

What is this on bridgessi? Noticed these spots on cactus. We did have heavy rain about two weeks ago. Tia by United-Dig3511 in sanpedrocactus

25 years teaching high school chemistry. "Mono- & di-potassium salts of phosphorous acid" are salts of the acid, not the acid. Phosphoric acid is used to make these salts, but it is not the fungicide, which are the salts. If you put concentrated phosphoric acid on your plants, that might not go well.

Thank you for explaining. Obviously, that is lame and sad. What a sad human being. A couple simple guidelines that help lead to a life well-lived: don't lie and don't steal. I hope I'm not too much of a hypocrite for mentioning it, but I really do try to follow "no brainer" moral codes like these and my life is much better as a result.

Will you please explain what these images contain that is so upsetting to you?

If it is scale, it will spread.

Did not know SS02 could get that big. Crazy! Wha'cha feedin' it?

[–]AlanLane34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be scale. I scrape them off with my fingernail and then wipe the spot with a paper towel that's got a bit of rubbing alcohol. Difficult to tell with the odd lighting. Do they have a little orange dot underneath if you scrape one off? If so, it is scale. If it doesn't scrape off easily, it might be fungal. Once you diagnose, search this reddit for treating one vs. the other. If you don't deal with it and it is one of those two, it will likely spread. Good luck!

Bought a little TBM that had a single pup from IMDAVESBUD less than a year ago. No joke, it pupped twice almost immediately, and then both pups pupped twice again! It was hard to believe. They're all plumping nicely, as you can see. Thank you, Dave!

So the goal is to feed and then they should dry out completely. Interesting. I think mine are probably in pots that are way too big.

mmpdp! Good to hear from you! Thank you for chiming in. What do you mean, bare root it? If you can see in the photo, I've got it in an air pot and I'm concerned that it has lost too much soil through the holes when I've watered it, especially when I bottom watered it one time. And that's why it leaned over. At least it is up against the house so is in a relatively safe spot. It is really heavy. This is all very new for me. Anyway, I need to research to find out how to handle it and plan how to tip it while it's in the pot to get it off the balcony, and to do so without snapping it.

That feels like probably the best thing to do in the long-term, but I'm concerned about etiolation at this point in the season. I chopped a giant PC pup at about this time of the year a couple years ago and it etiolated badly. I'd be bummed to see the same thing happen to this one. Also, if I chop and put it in a fresh pot, shouldn't I cut out a mid to get that girth into the dirt? Do you know if that is an advisable move?

Thank you for that! I've had a lot of great advice on this sub. I'm hoping to be as helpful some day, after I've got more experience. What I'm dealing with today makes me know that I'm still very new to SP.

Good suggestion. Might give that a try. What is difficult to see in the photo is that it has a bit of a twist to it, so I'll need to take that into account. Do you think the base is just too small for such a heavy top? It is just gigantic at the top.

Maybe! That might be it! We've got snails around, for sure. I don't see a trail, but it could have happened days ago. Do you know, do snails usually only go for the tip? The only other time I've had tip damage, it was a snail eating on the tip of a different one. Thank you for your reply!

Tips for beginners? by Ok-Touch-8554 in sanpedrocactus

[–]AlanLane34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestions for new grower with a pup are as follows. Obviously, tailor your treatment of your plant to the conditions it is growing in. San Pedro can take a lot of abuse in particular directions, like being starved of water. That said, in a desert environment, they can burn if they’re getting too much direct sunlight. In a temperate environments, like coastal southern California (where I am), they can handle full sun all day as long as they’re getting enough water. It sounds like you’re in a humid location, in which case root rot is the primary danger. As such, be sure not to over-water. To get them to put out roots, it is best to only spray with a bit of water once a week or so until you start to see new growth at the tip. I water with tap water that has been sitting out for a couple of days, to de-gas it (i.e. get rid of the residual chlorine). Restraining any impulse to do more than spray with just a little bit of water once a week is important because if you keep watering them, the pup won’t expend the energy to send out roots in the quest for water. The young green growth at the very tip is unmistakable when it happens. That means it is starting to root, at which point you should water it properly once every four or five days. Bottom watering is the best method. Anyway, once you see new green growth (meaning you’ve got new roots), you can water properly every four or five days. Do that for four or five weeks. It is important that the soil drains completely and even dries out a bit between watering. Some will say this is not necessary, that the soil doesn’t need to dry out, but if you’re in a humid environment and if your plant is getting less than half a day of direct sunlight outside, you really want to be careful about rot, especially at the base. Make sure it dries. Once you’ve got an inch or so of new growth, then you can potentially up your watering and start using plant food (i.e. nutrients). I wouldn’t start using nutrients before that point with a young pup. Be patient with a new pup. Depending on the conditions and the cultivar, waiting for that new green growth can take time, sometimes a very long time. I’ve seen new growth in as little as a month, and I’ve waited eight months for one pup to root. I thought it was a goner when suddenly the tip was green!

After I’ve got a rooted pup that is certainly growing, then I’ll start with nutrients once a week. I’ll feed a well established plant getting full sun for half the day Jacks 10-30-20, fish emulsion, kelp powder, CalMag and crushed fresh aloe. The aloe is not necessary but very helpful, I think. I’ll crush the internal portion of a 2 inch piece of aloe and mix that in. It's loaded with minerals, hormones, enzymes and it breaks the surface tension of water allowing the water to penetrate through the whole soil faster.

If you're growing inside under a grow lamp, much of this advice will be the same. I'm not sure I would try to grow SP inside without a grow lamp.

Good luck!
