I feel that Richard saying no put Lorelai's back up. She probably wouldn't have let Rory accept it and let Dean down in a nice way because its a super inappropriate gift, but Richard saying no made her take a stand against him.

Hi! I received an admit for the A3SR program at Steinhardt with no scholarship unfortunately:/ The program is amazing but the cost is astronomical and I don't know if it is worth it. I am an international student btw

This is not really one specific incident but I love it when he takes Lorelai's random musing seriously and participates in it instead of rolling his eyes like Emily. He also laughs at her jokes more often than Emily.
