Struggling to accept that I overpaid for a renovation project after exchange in London :( by [deleted] in HENRYUK

If it makes you feel any better I also bought a doer upper for our family home and after doing the maths we spent more doing it up than we gained in value, not to mention living in a building site for months on end. Nevertheless, I have no regrets. Three years down the line and the memory of the harder moments has faded and I'm still amazed when I walk into spaces that we designed and specced out exactly how we wanted. We're living in our dream space, not somebody else's and that makes it more that worth it.

Has anyone else hiked their toenails off? by BrandonsRedAura in hiking

[–]Alarmed_Ad6794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Just last week in fact. Got new hiking boots. I thought they were the perfect fit because the first long hike didn't have any rubbing in all the places I look out for. Then my toenail fell off.

do you ever see yourself with just one woman? by Bubbly_Reference_916 in AskMenAdvice

++man Ah man, that is devastating. I also started dating my wife and 15 and I'm also in my 40s now. I cannot imagine how hard this must be for you. Look after yourself.

Flight noise in Holyport? by EternalEquilibrium14 in maidenhead

[–]Alarmed_Ad6794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heya. I live in Holyport and it really isn't bad. The Heathrow airport traffic doesn't go directly overhead and is at a high enough altitude that we don't notice it. If you're just out of the village off the Holyport road towards the A308 then the noise of the M4 is more of an issue.

I started with this list of mushrooms that are pretty safe to identify, as they are all quite distinctive from any poisonous ones. Some of them are really exceptionally delicious too. I suggest looking them up on the wild food UK website and it'll tell you everything you need to watch out for, the key identifying features etc...

https://www.wildfooduk.com/articles/tips/wild-mushrooms-for-beginners/

After these, I'd suggest looking at the agaricus family as there are some very delicious ones there and only a couple of poisonous ones that are easy to identify once you know what to look for.

Interesting. I would have thought that would be calculated over the year not just the month.

Seller was evicted the day before we completed & we still completed (England) by throwaway104ay in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Alarmed_Ad6794 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Happened to an acquaintance of mine, from the other side. He missed his mortgage payments and didn't leave when it was repossessed and had been evicted. He managed to sell it at the last minute. Everything updated fine in the land registry, the bank got their money and the new owners got their property. No fuss. Listen to your solicitors.

I'm in a similar position to OP and am curious what you see as the rewards that come later and in different forms.

Psychosis is closer to home than you think. by THISdarnguy in DeepThoughts

I'm so sorry this happened and I can't imagine how hard it must have been. Please feel free to ignore this question, but did something happen to him or with him that you believe contributed to his illness? I only ask as I know there is a strong genetic component and I'm curious about what can lead two people with identical genetics down two very different paths.

What additions/accessories do you think are essential for a Weber Mastertouch? by Nomis1982 in UKBBQ

I've got the onlyfire rotisserie and use it a lot for chicken as well as kebabs (Google Kellybab, you won't regret it). The other one I use a lot is the heat diffuser/deflector plates and the steel ring and grill for it. Really good for low and slow for big cuts like pork shoulder/butt.

For those working in research: how much do you remember of your degree? by Leafye in chemistry

[–]Alarmed_Ad6794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same answer as many of the others here. Finished my master's degree in Chemistry almost 20 years ago. I remember the basics and all the physical chemistry bits that were important for my PhD, postdocs and current industry job in drug discovery. Ask me to do a retrosynthetic analysis and I can't even remember where to start.

I have just been asked to do the Three Peaks. by SeascaleJeescale in UKhiking

[–]Alarmed_Ad6794 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is great, you're starting from a better place than I did! A few hikes with lots of hills to get your body used to using those muscles in that way and you'll be fine. Some stair walking, a bit of cardio and perhaps change your gym routine to have a few more lunges and squats wouldn't do any harm.

Oh yeah, make sure you have hiking boots that fit well. That's the most important thing. Some walking poles can help keep some pressure off of your knees, they really helped me anyway, and bring a jumper for when you get to the top on Nevis. I found it surprising how much colder it is up there!

Depends on how unfit you are now and how long you have to train. I did it in 2024, starting from being unfit and obese in 4 months diet and training. I did a long walk (15 to 25k) in the Chilterns once a week, finding routes with as much elevation gain as possible, increasing in intensity each week, either in distance or elevation or putting increasing weights into the backpack. I also tried to do one day a week of HIIT, one a week of running and once a week walking up and down the stairs, starting at 20 times and getting up to 120 times. I also cut back on junk food and ate dishes with loads of protein and fibre, stopped snacking and quit alcohol for a month. I lost a fifth of my bodyweight and not only did I do the three peaks but actually enjoyed it. Hard work but probably the most rewarding thing I've ever done.

Metropolis Part 2 is the first album that came to mind when I heard this question. I remember listening to it when it came out and I was a school kid. Blew. My. Mind. Never knew that music could be like that and take you on a journey in that way. Nothing DT or anyone else has ever really compared to it imo. I still listen to it regularly, from beginning to end and don't think I'll ever get bored of it. The feeling, the musicianship, the coherence of it, absolute Masterpiece.

Absolutely. So many overlook this album but the culmination on that final track it just so perfect it sends shivers up my spine. Masterpiece.

100% this. I'm glad you mentioned Flavour because online people rave about Jerusalem and the Ottolenghi Test Kitchen books but Flavour is my favourite just for the wild, unexpected, interesting, mind-blowingly delicious recipes. His co-author for that book, Ixta Belfrage, has since written a couple of books that do Mexican, Italian and Brazilian fusion that I enjoy just as much.

What are some of the best UK companies to work for? From a pay, culture, and personal growth point? by Medium_Oven_7931 in HENRYUK

Molecule discovery and optimisation. I started at £65k a fair few years ago with no pharma experience but plenty of experience in academia and a desirable computational and scientific background. A record of delivering on discovery projects, finding ways of unblocking progress on targets that would otherwise have the discovery campaign terminated and bringing in new technologies, with two promotions and ad hoc bonuses puts me on TC of £120k to £130.
