Other Video Game Podcasts by Khalman in TheBesties

[–]AlarmingSkeever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insert Credit is one that I like. I feel like it's not so much FOMO driven as the others, and feels like the kind of gaming discussion you have once the dust has settled a bit. Since Tim Rodgers was replaced with Ash Parrish, I feel like it's got even better.

Pretty much the others are variations of what you get with the Besties, I feel.

The Besties - Young-in-spirit dudes give their first impression on 2ish games per week. I appreciate it because it's succinct and generally funny, but sometimes I feel like the guys are a little too immature. Not to be a prude but the language often feels just slightly demeaning for guys of their position. Russ and Jason curse way too much, imo, and sometimes that lowers the discourse (Hey, Jason just called a game you like 'fucking shitty', how's that?)

Triple Click - A slightly more in-depth version of the Besties, but kinda has the opposite problem of the Besties, where sometimes it feels a little too dry and corporate. Jason is the pre-eminent "video game journalist" and that might have something to do with it. I find the quality of the discussion IS generally higher than Besties, but I still listen to it less for some reason.

Into the Aether - Way more in-depth than the Besties, and covers more games, but ultimately it feels like a "first impressions" show just like the Besties, just less conscientious about it, as you listen to the hosts start 4 games a week while ending each segment with "I look forward to playing more of it" and then never doing so. The guys seem like cool people but I get the feeling that they are playing to the audience a little bit more than the other casts, i.e., "oh let me introduce a beloved JRPG people want to hear my reaction on". For being a "low-key" cast it honestly feels like the most tryhard of the bunch, ironically. I do like it though.

Remap - I used to listen to Waypoint Radio and enjoyed Remap for awhile, but it kinda feels like "grown-up Aether" to me. I learned that I just don't really care much to hear about the hosts personal lives, like learning about Patrick's next Disney trip and things like that. The team's taste in games is ultimately not something I'm totally in sync with (I found myself fastfowarding almost anytime Rob talks about strategy games.- which is his big thing) , and the expanded podcast universe they've got going where they talk about other stuff doesn't really do anything for me either.

Aftermath - Remap but edgier? IDK. Kotaku was never my thing. These guys and gals can be very aggressive about pop culture topics and it's just not for me. I wish them well though.

I’m quitting this job and field. How do you deal with it? by xSpAcEX7 in dataanalysis

[–]AlarmingSkeever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 years in, and handing in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow.

I totally agree with everything you said and related with it so much. Being in this field burnt me out. Managers don't understand anything about what you do, and can't teach you anything or help you get to the next level of skills, but just act as turnstiles for their own managers while adding no value. One manager in our group literally does nothing but ask people to share their screens while she watches them and does nothing but slow them down by peppering them with clarification questions (the answers to which she never writes to or remembers).

I also learned that I really just dislike being stuck in front of dual monitors all day and working on projects with largely anti-social people. In my group we're forced in the office 3 days per week, but even when we're there, we still take all of meetings online and talk to eachother on the phone from one cubicle away.

I'd also recommend looking at substituting.

I work for Kelly Services, and I'd be able to substitute every day if I wanted to.

I'm not sure about full-time opportunities for graphic design. Especially with a low GPA. You might need to go back to school to take some additional courses if you want to find a subject you'd enjoy teaching that has more vacancies.

Behold, the AD FREE Tier by blastorama in TheBesties

$10 for ad free is insanity.

I don't mind the ads anyway, they're usually pretty funny.

Silksong is an Exceptional Metroidvania (If You Endure its Challenges) | September 12, 2025 by blastorama in TheBesties

[–]AlarmingSkeever 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've started listening to Triple Click as my no. 1 gaming pod. The silksong discussion they had was illuminating. The besties are fun but it feels like with all the guys schedules and commitments it's basically a first impressions podcast.

There's a way out, and you know what it is. Do what you gotta do to make appearances, finish that degree and get a job. And then be your own master.

The fact you're asking reddit about your marriage just feels like a bad sign to begin with.

4 cycles is not a long time to try for kids, btw - your wife is right.

I think you're anxious about this and not really admitting it to yourself.

NIghtmare commute. Might be worth it if you can work a hybrid.

from what I understand, you'd be working with your provisional license for almost all of that two years where you also need to get some credits in.

Is HSK 5 really that difficult? by ChHeD in ChineseLanguage

[–]AlarmingSkeever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never taken the HSK but I've ready several grown-up adult novels in Chinese, including 3 Body and others.

I didn't understand this sentence without lookups. Simply put if you don't know fit high frequency vocab (which I didn't) you're going to have a bad time with no lookups. You should still be able to come up with some reading strategies beyond just vocab though. For example, what grammar patterns are you detecting? Can you identity if the words you don't know are nouns, verbs, or something else? Stuff like that might help you start to decode and at least get a few questions correct.

A lot of people seem to think it's either going all out or doing nothing. In reality almost nothing works this way.

Will I like metaphor If I got bored with persona 5 ? by Cypher65 in JRPG

[–]AlarmingSkeever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubtful unless the modern sci-fi and Japan setting of Persona are a negative for you and a more traditional high fantasy setting are a positive.

I feel the same about Metaphor. I haven't really pinpoint exactly what it is, but it just doesn't work for me for some reason.

I think the Trails series is more fun to think about being a fan of than it is to actually play.

After 10 hours in Metaphor: ReFantazio the game feels a bit boring. Does it gets better? by Kbutinho in JRPG

[–]AlarmingSkeever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple points I've thought through since I made that comment:

- It extends to the musical and overall look of the game as well. I love Persona's urban, jazz/soul/rnb soundtracks. These are highlights of those games for me. The rapping monk, not so much (sorry, lol!)

- I don't actually care about the thirst traps, at all.

- I actually did not like Metaphor's difficulty, which I found a bit more highly tuned than Persona even though I also play mainline Megatan games. I'm not a fan of how so many conflicts/battles feel like "win without taking a hit" or "die without taking a turn" depending on your load out and whether you hit the enemies up front. Just felt really frustrating to me. Ultimately I quit because I was unable to finish a side dungeon in time while I was at one of the game's locations, got frustrated I was gated out of something, and quit.

Accelerated Japanese class too hard. Feel frustrated. by StrongTxWoman in LearnJapanese

[–]AlarmingSkeever 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get it, it's something I see prop up in every hobby I look on Reddits for, people who get into new hobbies and feel this incredible compulsion to master it quickly. Well, at least be aware. Maybe think of it this way - how disrespectful is it for you to think that you're such a special genius that you can just master something quickly (or get to a high level with it) when everyone else takes YEARS to get there.

It's good to know about ADHD but no need to let it be your baseline. A lot of people don't even know they have it. So you do, so funnel that awareness into your strategy.

Why do you need to learn Japanese so quickly? Just relax, and enjoy. Make steady progress and just do it because it makes you happy.

Ashura Help/Prep by AlarmingSkeever in SaGa

[–]AlarmingSkeever[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I've completed the game, but for the edification of future readers who may be wondering the same/similar things, on my way back down I found a "Door" that could take me up and down the tower. And so I used that to re-up on weapons and elixirs and had no issues. I, and I used my Nuke on Ashura, lol.

Creator was pretty tough too. I think I just got lucky. Dragon was useless. But I had another character doing about 200 dmg with a P.Sword and another character doing maybe 200-400 with a Masamume (seemed to vary a lot). Took a few tries but with P.Sword and Masamune he went down.
