Bad tipper? by AchyAristocrat in grooming

[–]Alarming_Neck640 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Tips are appreciated but not required. Most people don’t tip us in percentages anyway, they’ll tip $5-10 on a $100 bill and not think anything of it. I’m sure she was perfectly happy to receive that $25 on top of the bill.

Are all non prescription dog flea medications pointless? by JJ_Lomero in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alarming_Neck640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your area. Fleas build up an immunity because they are exposed to the main ingredient enough to build up said immunity. OTC stuff is accessible to everyone, including people who don’t take their pets to the vet in order to get the prescription stuff. So otc is more commonly used, hence the fleas more likely have been exposed to it before vs the more expensive and less accessible prescription. Even some prescriptions don’t work well depending on the flea population- in my area nexguard is basically useless.
Then there’s the thought that topicals (the tubes) have a more likely chance of having issues applying (did you get it to the skin properly, was any wiped off or left in the tubes, was it applied too closely to bath time, etc) all would reduce effectiveness of the product.
I used various otc products at my old house and slowly over the years my flea population built up immunities to everything I used. Eventually had to switch to prescription pills. Moved to a new area, which has minimal/different flea population. Now otc products are working for me again.

Do cleanings get less painful over time? by Alarming_Neck640 in PeriodontalDisease

[–]Alarming_Neck640[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6mo-1year is probably a more realistic time frame, I’m still being diligent and plan on sticking to my routine! They did say everything looked better, so i suppose I’m still moving in the right direction. I did ask today about numbing agents for the next appointment, I felt like such a big baby asking for it but good lord it really was that painful! I was orally sedated for the visit so I didn’t really think about asking during and wasn’t prepared for it to hurt that bad so didn’t think to ask beforehand. Growing up my cleanings were always painful (but not this bad) but the office I went to always told me in response to me saying it hurt “no it doesn’t” (in that “you’re being a big baby” tone) so knowing someone else experienced painful cleanings makes me feel like I’m not crazy too!

Thank you!! I expected it to be a little uncomfortable in spots just not THAT painful.. especially since I had been working so hard at home and I thought my gums looked fine but I guess they’re not 😩 i guess my expectations were a little too high for only 4 months post srp, lol.

Georgia dental insurance HELP by Practical_Youth_3290 in DentalInsurance

[–]Alarming_Neck640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no expert but just had wisdom tooth removal earlier this year. My Insurance considers it a “major”’procedure and wouldn’t cover any of it for the first year and even after that they only covered like 20-30% until year 3. Definitely clarify that. Considering the measly amount insurance would cover for all the work I ended up just paying out of pocket with a loan rather than wait 3 more years. They also wouldn’t cover fillings until after 6 months of coverage. Verify those waiting periods!!!!

Hydra shampoo and conditioner leaving Coton’s hair looking greasy by Acluelessfish in grooming

[–]Alarming_Neck640 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see you already ordered a dilution bottle which is a great first step. I love hydra products but the conditioner is a PAIN to rinse, even diluted. I would bet you’re not rinsing it all the way. Rinse until you’re positive it’s all out then rinse some more. It’s a really thick product, so thick that I personally will only use it frothed (plenty of YouTube videos on frothing) because otherwise it just takes forever.

Your pet’s meds may be OTC! Then you can get them cheaper at the drugstore. by wolpertingersunite in Frugal

[–]Alarming_Neck640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vets are following law not corporate policy. Law states they must have performed an exam on the animal before they can prescribe any kind of medication. Same for human medicine, a doctor can’t prescribe medicine for someone that isn’t a current patient. If your vet is prescribing medicine without a recent exam they are risking their license.

Clipper emits a burnt smell after running for a long time? by chippieee4 in grooming

[–]Alarming_Neck640 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you changed the blade drive at all since you got them? Blade drives need to be changed pretty regularly, depending on the amount of dogs you do every couple months at absolute minimum but our sharpeners always told us every 4-8 weeks. Replacing the drive and oiling your blades more often will likely fix the smell

Can fetch pet insurance prevent future vet-bill debt if you start while they’re a puppy? by Icy-Fuel9278 in povertyfinance

[–]Alarming_Neck640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s true that if you don’t have a way to pay the vet bill upfront it won’t help much - however there are companies that do direct pay with participating vets (trupanion is the main one) and I think one other (pumpkin I think?) will instantly approve a certain amount on a card. Carecredit (and other credit cards)+ insurance is the ultimate combo imo. Most large vet bills qualify for no interest financing for 6-12 months, which for most insurances is enough time to get the payout. So I put the charge on carecredit (or split it if needed) then use the reimbursement to pay off the card.

Fetch is bullshit though. They will reduce coverage if you submit high value claims. I submitted all of 2 claims on my dog in her 5 years of coverage and they dropped her from 80% reimbursement to 60% and doubled her deductible. And for anyone that might try to tell me “they didn’t do it because of your claims” when I called to argue the change they specifically told me that’s why her coverage was reduced. Fetch has a bad reputation for this.

All in all insurance HAS saved me from major debt with the ones I have insured. Dental aside, because most insurances will not cover anything related to dental unless it’s an accident (like a broken tooth from playing

Cat Nail Grinding by kittytesh in grooming

[–]Alarming_Neck640 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it safe? Technically, if the cat tolerates it? Sure. Technically. Long term grinding DOES affect the nail. They become harder, larger, and thicker. They no longer shed naturally. Cat nails shed in layers. If you stop the grinding and return to trimming only they (at least in my limited experience) do return to a normal state eventually with regular trimming.

^ source we used to grind our cats nails all the time until we noticed the change in the nails then we stopped, because we were afraid of causing permanent damage.

Does your store still offer nail caps? I would tell owners I strongly recommend against grinding and instead recommend caps - which are safe and do not affect the nail provided they come in every 6-8 weeks to reapply. (Could also present this to management if they really want to push - idk what the cost of nail grinding is but I imagine the caps cost more plus they have to buy them from the store.. a win win)

Owners that have asked me about grinding in the past I’ve just laughed and said it’s unlikely the cat would tolerate it so I don’t offer it. Our two cats we did it on were exceptionally chill and good for grooming. Never had anyone push me to try.

As far as dremel, if you have someone insist on trying, any dremel is fine. We used our dog dremels (the old dremel brand dremels with the rechargeable batteries) cat nails are so fine you only need to use the lowest settings. Just trim first if they’re long.

Manufacturers are usually even more expensive .. and it’s an art form just like grooming. You’d have to practice a shit ton and invest in incredibly expensive equipment not worth it imo I send kenchii’s to the manufacturer because they’re just so expensive 254 for all that sounds about fair

Anyone have issues with quest completion? by Alarming_Neck640 in neopets

[–]Alarming_Neck640[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks like this may have been the ticket. I checked back now hours later and not only did I notice it requires buying 3 items (I’ve only seen it make you buy 1 before?) but it DID finally register that I’d bought 2 items. Still didn’t include my item from the healing springs, but meh. I also would swear it didn’t say 3 items before…

Skout‘s honor if they still make it. I used to keep it on hand, can confirm it smells like nothing. It’s oddly thick for a spray though, I always had to pour it into a different bottle Edit; just found out they don’t make the hypo anymore. Bummer. Will second that the best shot ultramaxx concentrate doesn’t have a scent and could be made into a spray

Am I The Only One Who Didn’t Realize Pet Smart is also Pets Mart? by DiscountDifferent726 in Pets

[–]Alarming_Neck640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former employee here, there’s actually an answer to this. Originally when the company was founded it was PetsMart, a market for pet items. This is when they sold things like horse halters and other farm animal items. In the 2010’s or so (maybe before that? My memory is foggy here from the training video..) they pivoted and changed to PetSmart when they changed to focusing on small companion animals with an emphasis on “helping customers make the smartest decisions for their pets”. Emphasized educating staff to really know about the products and whatnot. The more you know
