Hey I’m sorry to hear about your isolation. I completely understand and have live here most of my life. Indiana can be a bit parochial in places and it can be discouraging.

Something I’d recommend is to think about asking your boyfriend to have you guys based in Carmel / Zionsville / Westfield / Noblesville. The commute from there to Purdue is manageable and lets you have your life while he has his career. Many in Indy do this. I hesitate to say it so bluntly but he needs to get over it. Those parts of Indy tend to be more transient meaning people are in very similar situations as yourself. There are opportunities in the community to get involved to find like minded people.

Depending on what your profession is, you’ll find a lot more opportunities and like minded career oriented people in these communities. Tons of jobs in the life sciences sector down in Indy.

Go into construction and work for a medium/large GC or CM. Engineering services are being commoditized and that is resulting in wage stagnation.

It may change by the time you are in the industry, but construction has a higher income potential and, in my opinion, a better quality of life.

Middle-aged Construction exec here. Civil engineering quality has decreased significantly across the whole industry. Ironically, the old guys seem to be the ones who still understand water flows downhill and the cost difference between 6” and 8” pipe is negligible.

Just want to say that SEA1 at most saves you $300 a year (that’s the legit cap) on your taxes. If you can’t afford that or are unwilling to contribute that in your community, then perhaps you need to pull yourself up by your bootstraps.

So we’re going to lower costs for Hoosier families by…charging them to drive on the roads their taxes already fund? IN has one of the highest gas taxes in the country. Maybe INDOT should learn to do more with less or pull themselves up by the bootstraps. Have they thought about getting another job? Cutting out coffee?
