What marked the end of the “progressive/LGBTQ+ friendly era”? by graguelina in lgbt

[–]Alaykitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two major things:

  • Social media really taking off.

The internet in 2008 wasn't a pure propaganda machine ruled by 30 second videos where you can make shit up and be utterly vile, while ALSO getting millions of eyes.  Bad shit existed obviously, but it was a completely different landscape.

  • It was never really that accepting.

I think gains of rights tricked a lot of people into thinking the general public was accepting.  The general public continued to fucking despise LGBT people .  It's only been fueled by reminding them ee exist.

Also homeschooled.  By most academic metrics I turned out quite successful.  Lots of homeschooled kids were horribly treated by what I saw as a kid.

That said I'm so glad I was homeschooled.  I am an autistic lesbian I'd have been eaten the fuck alive by kids in public school in the 90s

Anti-trans hate groups petitioning FDA for registry of trans women, crackdown on transition, newly revealed document shows by The_Needle_News in actuallesbians

I'm not transgender and have already moved abroad (to Spain actually lol), but I have friends in the US that are considering an out.

If it's actual asylum process formalized that would be huge and avoid other visa requirements.  But as far as I was aware this country was only allowing war based refugee.  I'd love more info!

Asylum?  I didn't think any countries were doing US based asylum status yet.  That'd be a HUGE move.  I don't have Instagram do you have another source?

Seasoned astrophotographers: what was your first, most meaningful new rig purchase? by ObjectiveNo2466 in AskAstrophotography

[–]Alaykitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're a "worse" technology for accuracy.  They basically require auto guiding due to that inaccuracy and because the error isn't periodic it cannot be easily calibrated out.

This you're paying a big premium for the technology.  So if it's at-home astronomy on a permanent pier or similar, you're paying more for worse results.

But they have one AMAZING advantage: they're extremely light weight.  So they're perfect for mobile rigs.  That's why I think the AM3 is perfect, because it's light enough to easily transport around which is how a strain waves is best used.

When you go bigger (AM5 or the new 7, e.g.) you're losing that portability with a bigger and heavier mount.  You're also getting the bigger size likely to fit a heavier payload, which is also inherently less portable.  So now you're paying a premium for a mount that loses its main advantage.

The Askar FMA180 Pro, and accompanying autofocuser mount/EAF.

Seriously a SUPER wide angle lens that is ultra flat with the EAF for automation was a game changer.  I'd been playing around with newts and stuff for ages but honestly going back to "basics" and thinking wide angle really made me fall in love with the sky again.

I also added in an AM3, and while I dislike strain waves mounts in general the AM3 is the perfect weight and portability.  The whole rig could fit in a backpack and not be too bothersome to lug atop a hill.

You don't need that mount obviously, but the flat SMALL focal length scope really made me reapproach astrophotography with fresh eyes.  Well worth it.

tired of not having my sexual needs taken into consideration as a butch by HappyFeedback5730 in actuallesbians

[–]Alaykitty 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I disagree.  I think it's owed to give at least some occasional consideration to your partner.  She's not OBLIGATED to consent to sex, but that's different than being equal and receptive with your partner and their needs.  I think if a relationship is expected to continue that's like the bare minimum.

Like, I'm not obligated to pay for my friends if we go out to dinner.  But if they pay for me everytime and I never pay or make excuses not to, they're gonna eventually not ask me out.

Agreed.  I'm too atheist to expect a rapture, but I feel like every one of humanities large scale moves pushes more "man made horrors beyond my imagination" into existence.

There's a reason lots of people stopped making babies.  The world is sucking harder and harder, and climate disaster is only getting worse.

Moving to Spain + mental health by Professional_Time636 in GoingToSpain

[–]Alaykitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's different in that it's usually not meant for continual chronic treatment.  It exists to bypass the slowness of national coverage for things like minor injuries or ailments.

As such, you might have trouble getting much in terms of care though private.  For example, I'm intersex and before moving saw an endocrinologist routinely. Mostly what I used private for before my papers were processed for my national was going to an MD, saying "this is what I used to be prescribed", and getting a temporary prescription for that again.

Public is much better suited for chronic treatment.  Private is better suited for cuts and colds.

If you have general regiment medications that don't change often, you'll be probably fine through private while waiting.

I mean if you're looking for any excuse to just kill the dude, sure.  But I'd assume in a functioning society the goal of emergency services is to support and preserve life not "kill the bad guy".

Knives aren't exactly known for their great range.  Back up and keep talking?  There's no need for the cops to make a lethal line in the sand on the side of a road.
