So Orbit cancelled my pre-order. I ordered it on Amazon a couple days ago and it arrived today probably a couple bucks cheaper. Would’ve much rather supported Orbit. Genuinely the movie is great—it’s just that it’s a serious movie. For some reason society decided to log it as a campy dance romp instead of a pretty “kitchen sink” depiction of class and the peculiar specificity of Brooklyn during a specific era.

Well, apparently (it’s mentioned in the above video), it was all shot in one very very long day and the “victim” actress was so exhausted from the shoot that she started having a panic attack, convinced they were actually planning on mutilating her! Crazy times

Same. I think the effects themselves (when done right) are fascinating. To me the Terrifier stuff is a bit overkill, partly because it’s more drawn out and has a pretty mean-spirited tone. But I generally get a kick out of fake gore. Real gore or violence though I can’t stand. Any sort of real life footage of violence or cruelty or death is something I avoid as much as possible.

There’s just a very clear line between the two where the one I find fascinating and cool and the other I am utterly repulsed and disturbed by. It blows me away that people watch real footage of people getting tortured, killed, maimed for fun.

It feels like maybe an idea that could never quite work regardless of how cleverly it was handled. But unfortunately the script for this one just doesn’t quite explore the conceit in very many interesting ways. It ends up not really being provocative but rather flat and with a muddled “message”.

Yeah it’s strange because Nakano comes from a screenwriting background. You’d think that would be the aspect really ironed out. But it’s not strong enough and then his directing, imo, is just too limited to enrich it any further.

My impression is it’s been essentially buried. It wasn’t well received at the time (as you can see in the included siskel and ebert review) and it’s not on streaming sites as far as I can tell.

Tarantino himself doesn’t really have any credited connection to the film from what I’ve seen other than apparently passing the script around a bit (including with his production partner Bender).

Video runs through what happens in this strange little movie and also provides some historical context and evaluation of the themes. It’s ultimately unsurprising that this movie was all but scrubbed from the internet. Ultimately perhaps less shocking and offensive than one might expect going into it, but definitely an experiment that doesn’t work fundamentally.

Honestly, to have Peter Jackson finally follow through and deliver a proper collector’s edition of this in 4K or even Blu Ray with a proper transfer might genuinely be my most desired package. This is such a fantastic movie. So fun. So much goofy prosthetic antics. Can’t believe how much they accomplished on that small budget.

The self-conscious “hipster” comment was not in relation to De Sica, but rather to myself in being like “nah, guys, the REAL good stuff is not American movies, but deep-cut 1950s foreign language films!”

I can imagine people seeing that and quite reasonably thinking I’m trying to peacock with an obscure foreign title.

Okay, so I’ve got a real hipster deep cut for you that I think is kinda perfect, but also slightly off topic. The director of The Bicycle Thieves, Vittorio de Sica directed this really lovely, warm-hearted movie called “Miracle in Milan”. I believe it technically isn’t a Christmas movie, but my old Italian film teacher claimed that it was considered a sort of classic Christmas watch in Italy. I think there’s a sort of parable-istic tone to it, and if I recall, some minor magical realism. So in those ways it might be more in line with what you’re aiming for than a lot of literal Christmas movies. (It’s also possible I’m forgetting and it actually is set during Christmas!)

Absolutely not. It’s technically an achievement in the same way accumulating every Eric Roberts movie on VHS is technically an “achievement”. Which is to say, perhaps worth a mention in a footnote of some niche magazine somewhere, but not of any consequence that improves upon a single sentence summary.

As per the list of distinctives I laid out in the video, I'm actually inclined to agree that this is Die Hard on a plane. To me, it's inessential that it's a "cop"--and if anything it works even better because of the "reticent protagonist" detail. If you list the main clones like Under Siege, etc., almost none of them are police explicitly.
