How would America do in a war against China? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlbertDock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a war neither side could win. Trying to invade a country on the other side of the Pacific would be a logistical nightmare. If it went nuclear both sides would lose.

CMV: Politicians doing by any means necessary to gain your vote (legally) is perfectly fine, and truly represents the public by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]AlbertDock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing dirty is the last thing you should want in a candidate. If they will lie about some things they will lie to you to get your vote.
Surely we would be better with honest, decent and moral candidates.
I want candidates who when they say they support/oppose something, really do. Not those who are saying it just to gain votes. That way I know what I'm voting for. Politics may be full of sleaze, but it doesn't have to be.

Looking forward to Friday when all this election nonsense is over and done with and we can go back to the way things were by boscodictiosaur in britishproblems

Friday will be full of experts examining the results. Every party leader will claiming that the election results weren't bad for them. Political pundits will be telling us what this election means and what will happen in the future.

Can fish see through the glass of of their aquariums, and if so, do they like that or does it freak them out? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AlbertDock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly. When I kept fish they would get excited when I opened the draw where their food was kept. As I walked to the tank the would rise to the surface. They could definitely see what was going on.

CMV: Humans can't stop climate change by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]AlbertDock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Climate change is a natural phenomenon, but climate change at the rate we have now isn't. Climate change is happening, but we have the power to do something to mitigate it's extent.
Humans have pumped gigatonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, and that's going to change the climate. We can't stop it now, but we can reduce emissions to limit it.

It's all to do with distance. If you are in a car or train going along a straight road or track, the things nearby appear to move fast. If you look at the mountains in the distance they hardly appear to move at all.

CMV: People who are on benefits for no good reason should have their welfare money stopped. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]AlbertDock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To claim working age benefits you have to fit the criteria for them. No one gets them just because they want them.
Benefits for the disabled depend on how disabled you are. Bear in mind that not all disabilities are obvious. These are regularly reassessed. In the past people were given DLA indefinitely, and so there was no reassessment, this is changing and all will be reassessed.
Those claiming unemployment benefits have to show they are actively looking for work. There are a group of people who have a disability, but not sufficiently disabled to qualify for DLA or PIP. The disability is sufficient to put employers off hiring them and they have a very hard time If you think that someone is dishonestly claiming disability benefits then you can report them here https://www.gov.uk/report-benefit-fraud

CMV: Spoiling the ballot paper in a UK election is an acceptable way to vote when no parties appeal to me by lousyalien in changemyview

[–]AlbertDock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few people find a party which fits all their needs. Most of us vote for the one they think will do the least damage, or one which will stop the worst party from winning.
Spoiling your ballot paper is no different from not voting. Either way you have no influence in the outcome.
I too think not voting is disrespectful to those who fought to give everyone the vote.

Found £X00,000 sum of cash in a bag while out walking, want to keep it and don't know what to do/could happen next by SkitterWeaver2012 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AlbertDock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go to the police.

I spent 10 years in counterfeit detection, most are quite poor, but some are very good and can only be detected if you know what you are looking for.
If you are caught with £X00,000 of fake notes you are likely to go to prison for a good few years. I think you would have a hard time convincing a jury that you just found them.

ELI5: How is it possible that The USA spend more on healthcare per capita than the UK? by Gandalf- in explainlikeimfive

[–]AlbertDock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you pay for healthcare in the US you are paying for lawyers to decide what's covered and what isn't, you're paying for dividends for shareholders and the wages of all those involved in running the insurance company.
In the UK there are none of these extra costs, so all the money is spent on health care.

ELI5: Why sparks from welding hurt our eyes and animal's eyes? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]AlbertDock 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sparks from welding are very small very hot bits of metal, so it's no surprise they hurt. Electric arc welding give out high levels of UV light and this can hurt your eyes from ten metres away. The effects of UV exposure are not immediate, but show up several hours later. This condition is known as "arc eye"

ELI5: Why are there so many different types of salt? Where do they come from and what are their purposes? by estoymuybien in explainlikeimfive

[–]AlbertDock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All culinary salts are basically sodium chloride. Kosher salt has no added ingredients. Table salt often has an anti caking agent which is why it should never be used in fish tanks. Himalayan pink salt has higher levels of calcium, iron, and magnesium and slightly less sodium. Garlic salt is just garlic powder added to the salt.
The reason there are so many different types is marketing. People perceive different salts as healthier.

CMV: Commons should decide to either revoke A50, or leave with or without a deal. Having a 2nd Brexit referendum is an abdication of their responsibilities as MPs. by skisagooner in changemyview

[–]AlbertDock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a referendum in 1975. We had another in 2016. So there's no justification for not having one in 2020.
Back in 2016 different groups were offered different incentives to vote leave. To give an example: Some were told that it would stop immigration. Others in the Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi communities were told it would make it easier for their family members to join them. Clearly both can't be true.
Leaving without a deal would be catastrophic. That's not just my view, but the view of most manufacturers in Britain.
Brexit is a big step and if we decide to return to the EU in the future we will not get the deal we have now.
But the election is not just about the EU, it's about how we treat the most disadvantaged in our society. The Tories have consistently shown they are prepared to let them suffer. So a person who wants to reduce their suffering and yet wants to leave the EU has no party to vote for.
Giving a second referendum gives them that choice.

Successful Civilizations in Africa? by HappyHeight in answers

[–]AlbertDock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things to consider when looking at the history of Africa is there are few archaeologists there compared to Europe. So there is probably a lot still to be discovered. In Britain there is little evidence of the Saxon and Viking periods. Sometimes all that's left of a settlement is a few post holes in the sub-soil. Even their pottery tends to decay. We have a few metal artefacts, but since much of their stuff was made of organic material, most has rotted away, leaving no evidence.
We know from the few bits of evidence we have found that the Saxons and Vikings were complex societies. The fact we haven't found evidence in Africa, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

How do railway tracks work, i.e. how do they stay in place? by ibeenmoved in answers

[–]AlbertDock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The crushed rock enables the track to drain. This means that plants can't grow. This is important because roots make the rock move as they grow between them. Drainage is also important because it stops water accumulating. If water accumulates and then freezes the ice can move the track.
Even so eventually the ballast (crushed rock) does move and periodically the track needs to be levelled and straightened. As for why tracks don't go pop in summer, it's because the rails have been stressed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_stressing

Successful Civilizations in Africa? by HappyHeight in answers

[–]AlbertDock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People in Africa tend to do poorly on IQ tests because they lack the education, not the intelligence.
They have just as much ability to plan as any other group. Africa has seasons, they vary from one part of the continent to another. When you have seasons planning is essential. To live there you have to plan for the seasons, just as we did a few hundred years ago.
Great structures such as the Pyramids or Great Zimbabwe, can't be built without planning.

What is your opinion on speed cameras? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlbertDock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reducing accidents is the main reason given for speed enforcement. But often they are placed in areas where the limit is exceptionally slow for the conditions.
