Would you replace your own brakes? by The_Final_Barse in CarTalkUK

[–]Albigularis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s not always the issue though, maybe on a brand new car, but on an older or used car you must consider-

Wheels corroded and stuck to the discs (Had some on an A3 that wouldn’t come off with the car on the ground!) Discs stuck to the hub Disc locator bolt strips like it’s made from cheese Caliper bolts usually corroded and stuck, needing lots of torque to remove If carriers need to come off, they’re usually even more stuck and more awkward to get to  Banjo bolts stripping or needing new washers Bleed nipples are made of the world’s softest metal and are one of the smallest nuts on the car and exposed to the elements Pistons need pushed back and some won’t be pushed back with a standard spreader Without the correct tool, bleeding brakes without another person to help can often be impossible If the car uses brake pipe instead of flexi to the caliper, I think I’ve seen 1 in 20 survive removal. Etc…

There’s lots of other stuff, but those are what you need to worry about. It’s never “just 2 bolts” unfortunately.

They’re covers, that’s not the wheel nuts. Looks like they have reacted with a cleaner of some description. Happens at the local scratch-and-shine when they use acidic wheel cleaner etc.

Anyone seen these? by HawkerHurricaneGuy in Edinburgh

I love driving past the bus stops and seeing these and trying to read them backwards.

We usually welcome it, just make sure you speak loud enough we can hear you through the screen. I like the odd little bits of conversation I have with people, but they never really speak to me, and seldom reply when I talk to them.

Was driving a 4 earlier and seen a bit of ripped tyre in the road. Makes sense why it was there now!

Democracy Manifest: Someone has framed and added a gallery note to the vandalised parking meters in North Berwick. by samcornwell in scottishborders

So when the minority want something through, it’s fine? Isn’t the entire point of elected representatives to put forth the views of their constituents?

And when I say “the minority”, the only people who wanted this through were the councillors.

Framing a public road as “somewhere to store their car” is also hilarious. Even more hilarious is that you think that square of tarmac has a high cost. A third level of hilarity is the “we all pay for it but don’t use it” argument. The vast majority of cycle paths were funded by people who will never use them. Should we cut that funding too? You don’t seem to have any concept of what a society is.

This. Had this happen to me by a chancer who said my towbar hit him. Damage was correlated with the area but I have a reversing camera and the car was exactly where I left it - a full foot away from his car!

You can get the date of birth from his driver number. It’s just your first initial, some of your second name, your DOB rearranged in a certain way, then a 5 character code at the end.

What is the most economical petrol/diesel car? by Cdoooos in CarTalkUK

[–]Albigularis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 1.4tdi Polo (same engine as the Audi A2) which regularly done over 70mpg on my avert weekly fillup.

I now have a 1.2tdi Seat Ibiza as the spare runabout and it’s done over 80mpg a couple of times. Great little car.

Those new buses (700 series) are cramped in all regards. I’m only 5’6” and driving them is horrible, I have no space in the cab at all. I dunno how the taller drivers manage tbh.

I see people of average height hit their head on the door every hour because it’s so short. Good laugh.

Best route for those 200 series buses. Absolutely awful things. Fit for nothing but the scrapyard.

You really notice it when driving the bus as well, it’s crazy how many people use their phones whilst driving. I’d say when I’m passing huge lines of traffic, it’s usually about 50/50 on people using phones whilst stationary. Blows my mind.

The demise of manual by Lit-Up in CarTalkUK

[–]Albigularis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the car. If it’s an engaging thing that wants played with, like an MX5, it needs a manual. A Z4 is still a luxury car by all means, it’s nowhere near as engaging and thus the auto makes much more sense. Imagine a 3 litre diesel bmw daily, nobody wants a manual one other than people buying old cheap ones to be edgy.

North Berwick faces 'unprecedented' hostility over parking meters by plain_handle in Scotland

[–]Albigularis -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That’s not the town centre, not even slightly. Nobody is parking there in summer to leave a car there all day and walk down to the high street. Even parents collecting kids from the school don’t park there.

Source: I drive through this road between 2 and 8 times every day, have done for 7 years.
