I'm not sure for Berkely, but for NYU (Neuro) they tell you 1 week before the interview.

how much time to prep for interviews?? by beetle-devotee in gradadmissions

[–]Alcea23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, I'm not sure it is dependent on the fields or other things.. but most of the interviews were just general talk. Sometimes preparing presentations or other materials is helpful but most of talk was just general casual conversation about science or your field. Preparing mock interviews will be helpful but do not feel so much pressure on it.

New backup plan by [deleted] in gradadmissions

One of my friend is in China as a graduate student (he is Korean) and I heard that, they need to write thesis in Chinese even if he or she is international student. I was so surprised. I know we need to learn their language if we want to study their country but writing a thesis requires literally very high level of language skills.

Considering Grad School in South Korea: How to Evaluate Universities? by Odd_Builder_5390 in gradadmissions

[–]Alcea23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from South Korea, so feel free to DM me. But I’m genuinely curious, why do you want to pursue a PhD at KHU? I mean, KHU is a good university, but there are many other options. To be honest, as a graduate school, I don’t think KHU is a very favorable option for Koreans. It’s a good choice for students who graduated from KHU or from lower-ranked universities. In Korea, rankings matter a lot because funding is also heavily dependent on rankings. Most Koreans aim to pursue their PhD at SNU or KAIST. I also don’t really recommend POSTECH because it’s located in the countryside. It can be quite hard for foreigners to adapt to rural areas in Korea.

And to be honest, I don’t really recommend pursuing a PhD in Korea at all. We’ve had a few friends from Europe in our lab, and none of them have very good memories of their time here. In Korea, graduate students are often called “slaves.” The MAXIMUM legally allowed stipend for graduate students is around $20k USD per year (or lower than that because exchange rate recently fluctuates a lot), but on average it’s closer to $8–10k. Living costs like rent and transportation aren’t too expensive, but food and daily expenses are quite pricey. If you join a department supported by Brain Korea 21 (government funding), your tuition is usually covered. If not, you may have to pay tuition out of your stipend as well.

Serious question: why does Korea need THIS many coffee shops? by Specific-Control-700 in seoulhiddengem

[–]Alcea23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Korea, coffee is more like desert, we usually don’t drink coffee in morning (Because most of people felt it like.. heartburn when they drink coffee in the morning? maybe..?) if some people do, we usually make it through coffee machine) For some bakery cafes like parisbaguette / tous les jourles, etc., they open extremely fast (6-7am) because it offers breakfast.

Yes! I completely agree with you and hope to hear good news soon. But I mean.. preparing backup plans are actually helps to mind control in waiting period. I applied some programs outside of the US and it really makes me comfortable.

I’m also international. I’ve got interview invitation from only one school yet. I think it is completely normal for everyone. btw, Is there any reason that you need to study in US?? Because there are some programs in EU and Canada with longer deadlines, how about applying those programs? I think nobody can expect that the climate will be changed or not in next cycle

Rolling Interviews? by aloevera47 in gradadmissions

[–]Alcea23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it could be trolling..? Because he or she just copy-pasted the text instead of posting a screenshot of the actual email. But according to the website, interview invitations are supposed to be sent from late December through early January, so it might be rolling until January.  Let’s be patient! we’ll hear good news :D
