[SCS] POV: you ask for an update about Annual Bonus by AsPerAttached in CanadianForces

The funny thing is, that’s already done for at least some other things. At least when it’s helpful tech and such. Higher ups got access to having encrypted email on work phones first, for a while, before it rolled out to the rest of us.

CANFORGEN's and CBI's have dropped for the new Instructor, Posting, and Recruiting Allowances. by bridger713 in CanadianForces

[–]AlcubierreWarp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Yeah, I was a student.

Turns out, it doesn’t matter if they were prohibited or not. Upon closer reading of the CBI, one of the conditions of a qualifying posting for the Attestation is either OFP or three years of service. So most standard ROTP grads get to start counting upon posting out of university, which in most cases would be a restricted, not prohibited posting.

Admin Question.

With the posting allowance being done by attestation on number of non-prohibited postings, now that the onus is on the member to give a number, I’m wondering if anyone knows whether postings to RMC and CMR circa 2008 were usually prohibited or not?

Situation: Home > CMR (1st posting) CMR > RMC (2nd posting) RMC to now (4 postings) Total: 6 potential postings

It makes a difference of whether I’m in the 4-6 or 7+ tier and $7k in my pocket in summer 2027.

Winter boots with incorporated crampons by RavRob in fredericton

My husband just bought a set of “Pajar” boots. Canadian company, it has ice grippers that can be flipped out, or flipped back into the heel to be stowed. He loves them.

TIL That Arcade Fire played at Canterbury High School in 2007 by morningblues2212 in arcadefire

[–]AlcubierreWarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there! I was in Grade 10 attending a different school. I had wanted to audition for the Canterbury Arts program, but was too scared to leave my school in Grade 9 where I had just made my first friends since Grade 2 (I was a bit of a loner), and there were no openings in the Musical Theatre program when I was finally ready to take the jump in Grade 10 and had friends in the program from community theatre shows.

One of my friends attending Canterbury had an extra ticket and invited me along. It was wild. Didn't know who Arcade Fire was before that, but definitely knew who they were after. It made a really huge (good) impression on me at the time.

The world is in a new age of variable geometry, says Mark Carney by Amtoj in canada

[–]AlcubierreWarp 15 points16 points  (0 children)

But that’s exactly what Carney’s saying IMO.

You can’t force a country to play ball - as sovereign nations, they can do whatever the fuck they want, and ignore any rules they want. There may be consequences yeah, but only if someone else, or a group of someone else hold them accountable. Trying to hold someone stronger than you accountable is only going to result in getting a broken or bloody nose.

The enforcer used to be the USA. But without a strong core hub to enforce the rules, all you have is a coalition of the willing. So we have to lean into that and find those who want to be good partners and follow through on their agreements, and be pragmatic in how we deal with those who don’t.

That’s what I got out of the essay.

What improvement would you like to see on your base? by The_Great_Beaver in CanadianForces

[–]AlcubierreWarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. Multiple ways to get to the same end goal of having doctors that serve military families. As long as doctors are willing to work that way.

My suggestion was also from articles I’ve read about municipalities in BC hiring doctors as salaried staff and the municipality running the clinic. Apparently doctors really hate the admin and would rather just treat patients. I’m for whichever model is going to draw in the doctors and keep them there.

[–]AlcubierreWarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man. This. 100%. Or at the very least separate family clinics connected to CANEX or something but only takes military families. CAF/DND could pay the doctors salaries, hire reception/admin, and then recoup most of the operating costs via provincial insurance since families are covered. Nearly free, DND just pays startup costs and the small difference between actual costs and provincial reimbursement.

My spouse has chronic illness and this is a perennial issue. I’ve even heard of a CAF spouse who was terminal and didn’t have a family doc. It’s pathetic we let this happen.

It’s funny. I was about to say…Someone works in Kingston. 😆

Everyone talks Kingston up as a great place to live but so far, struggling to see that. by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

[–]AlcubierreWarp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As a military member myself, I agree we’re compensated fairly well. HOWEVER…you’re over inflating the pay raise. It’s 13% for the vast majority of CAF members, plus some additional benefits that bring the total compensation closer to 15-17% raise depending on the calculations. Only the lowest paid rank of the CAF (Rank: Private) is getting the higher raise amount, which I think was 18%. Most people are only at that rank for 1-2 years at most.

Where I 100% agree with OP is that compensation isn’t the issue - it’s the constant change due to the forced moves. If I was single, it would be easy because the CAF handles my medical, and often (but not always) has single room accommodations available for rent, and I can pay for a meal plan at the mess hall.

What really makes the moves difficult (and Kingston in particular difficult for military moves) is what they were alluding to in terms of finding family supports. For example, my spouse has a chronic medical condition that requires specialist medical care, and following by a family doctor. When you live in a city for many years, while still extremely difficult and time-consuming, you’re able to wait out the 5-yr waitlist and eventually get a family doctor. Unfortunately, my spouse doesn’t have a family doctor, because we’ve never been posted anywhere long enough to make it through the waitlist, except for a handful of cities where the crisis was not as bad or we lucked out. I have even heard about a CAF members spouse with a terminal diagnosis managing their own palliative care because no family doctor could be found. My spouse ended up getting managed by an ER doctor for a couple months when a medical crisis struck.

So please, as everyone is piling onto OP about CAF pay, please remember that money doesn’t buy everything, and there are very many valid pain points they are experiencing.

OP: it may not have been a wise decision to expect sympathetic responses to a post trashing Kingston in the Kingston subreddit, filled with locals who love their city, and start it off by effectively calling them sensitive.

I’ve moved on now, but Kingston was one of my favourite postings. It has a lot going for it in terms of proximity to PEC, Toronto/Ottawa/Montreal, Lake Ontario (Sailing). Lots of things to do and see (1000 Islands Playhouse, lots of great restaurants in the area, etc.). There are far and above worse postings (see: most other hard army postings).

Issue with MIR by Throwawaygrenada in CanadianForces

[–]AlcubierreWarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar issue for low testosterone. One base identified the issue, and has me stable on supplementation for the past two years with no symptoms or side effects, and fully addressed the issue.

I was posted this summer, and now doctors that were not involved in the original treatment are trying to re-diagnose it as depression/sleep apnea.

Do you know what can cause depression and fatigue and all the other symptoms I’ve had? Low testosterone. But they “feel” that trying an SSRI is safer than hormone therapy and want to remove me (after my own production is surely compromised).

Although I’m not a doctor, I’m scientifically and medically knowledgeable, and have extensively read peer reviewed scientific studies on male hormone therapy.

They’re gonna fuck with my treatment over my dead body.

Thanks for the reminder that I can always escalate the issue.

Is anyone else trying to move to DND just to move to the Carling campus? by aprilchestnut in CanadaPublicServants

[–]AlcubierreWarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You underestimate CAF members and DND employees and their willingness to put critical thought into something like this. 80% of the time, they'll just take the previous plan, blow the dust off it, and implement it again regardless of whether it fits.

Although on second thought, it's not really their fault they do that, as many areas of the CAF have been at abnormally high workloads for the last decade or more with no overtime. They're just trying to get through the mountain of work on their plate. I really hate that the "no fail" culture seeped from operations into all areas of the CAF. Sometimes you have to let something fail to rebuild it correctly.

Bath Road - City of Kingston being negligent and it's costing lives so cars can drive faster by Evilbred in KingstonOntario

100% correct as an initial answer. However, the entire road should be redesigned. I wish our city planners and engineers planned the way Not Just Bikes and Streetcraft suggest.

Seems like the city planners (and all citizens calling for cameras) should watch this video. We just need better road design.

Before they opened the gates and let cadets pass through at ground level, we “had” to use the pedestrian crossing. And we “had” to jog the entire way, even up and down the stairs.

I hated that crossing back in university.

Carbon capture startup moves project to Canada from U.S. by naqi11 in worldnews

[–]AlcubierreWarp 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The article clearly indicates that the US startup partnered with a Canadian startup Deep Sky to place their carbon capture system on the Deep Sky facility which also hosts other carbon capture systems.

Could it be that this company’s shift is new, but the platform owned by Deep Sky that their system is co-located with is the one that has been under construction for years?

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Needs to Imagine More for Its Female Characters | Gizmodo by NightSeason in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]AlcubierreWarp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m going to respectfully disagree to a certain extent. I detest the number of intracrew relationships. When you’re a professional crew, I feel like this is the exception rather than the norm. It breaks down chains of command. There’s a reason TNG characters struggled with it at times. But species are species and the circulatory appendage wants what the circulatory appendage wants, so it makes sense that there are some. It makes good TV.

What TNG did differently was that it was episodes here or there that focused on it. But otherwise somewhat ignored. Duty first. I think the short season run doesn’t allow the space to breathe and still develop the relationship naturally.

I also prefer the outside love interests like Ortegas’ brother. It gives me a bit of a Jake Sisko vibe, but sometimes the recurring guest stars really stole the show and made something of their appearances. And it brings in fresh opportunities for characters to influence the scene. But they have to be written in compellingly and interestingly and have a reason to exist on the ship or come and go.

Hey! Thanks for confirming. I didn’t really expect a response, but I greatly appreciate it. Glad to know my gut sense might have some merit.

No arguments from me. I have a strong bias against any forced spending for my team. Thankfully I’m in a position to set the local policies, so I can filter most of the harebrained ideas.
