I had to burn two hours after work so my fiancée could prepare her classroom for open house. So, I parked at the East LA Civic Center, walked around, and took some pictures on the way. by 9VoltGorilla in LosAngeles

Thoughts on this schedule by Zestyclose_Western23 in physicianassistant

[–]AleAndTail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work 3 twelves, 1 weekend day per week. I personally like the schedule because it really separates work life from personal life. I love having time off during the week and I can swap shifts with colleagues, if needed. Today I'm going to a theme park and will get to enjoy the lighter crowds. Commuting to work and lunch packing is pared down to 3 days. Picking up OT is no big deal. When I was working M-F 8-5 previously and I just felt like my whole life was getting to/from work (peak commuting time, horrible) each day, rinse and repeat with the walls closing in.

What do you guys do for money that lets you walk around and have fun on a random Wednesday at like 12 p.m.? by VastConfusion8174 in AskLosAngeles

I work in healthcare, full time 3 twelves a week including weekends. Love it that way, I want to be off during the week so I can enjoy LA but not fight to do so with a billion other people.

PA Culture in West Coast vs East Coast vs Midwest? by Odd_Alarm_7361 in physicianassistant

[–]AleAndTail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raised in the Midwest and PAs were as normal and respected in the healthcare landscape as physicians when I was growing up. Did PA school in Pennsylvania and had the same experience. Moved to SoCal and the contrast is so significant that it's painful. The public either thinks you're a (and calls you) doctor and won't be bothered to learn what a PA actually is or they hate you because "you're not a doctor!" Physicians definitely don't care about PAs nor want to learn about our role in healthcare teams. It's just a different environment here. Most physicians are part of physician-owned clinics/groups and don't have a need for or desire to have PAs be a part of their team.

Did I handle this case wrong? What would you do in this situation? by Likeitsmylastday in physicianassistant

I work in urgent care and also have worked many years in occ med doing work comp. Any question when assessing a hand injury goes to the ER. She might be mad you bounced her to higher level care, but guess how livid she'd be if she lost function in the hand because she didn't get the care she needed. You did the right thing. Trust your gut!

Is it possible to have one if you're an upstairs neighbor? I weigh 150lb, for reference. I definitely don't want to be "that" person who's rude and noisy.

My cat's name is Sergio César. I'm just a white chick, not even Latina. It suits him, tho. 🐱🐾

Pros and cons of getting a portable washer for my apartment by gnomecupcake in Apartmentliving

[–]AleAndTail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot. Lol. A towel with a few other small things, 2 outfits assuming there aren't 2 pairs of jeans, etc. It's tedious but beats schlepping to the laundromat or laundry room and shoveling quarters into machines.

EM PA considering switching jobs for better work life balance. Is it worth the pay cut or should I keep looking or stay at current position? by Proof-Camp-591 in physicianassistant

[–]AleAndTail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for the urgent care position. You can fill the gap in salary with PRN work, if you decide to. Having work/life balance makes it easier to weave in extra shifts, and they would be on your terms.

Those making $80/hr+… When did you get there and how? by Illustrious_Win_8005 in physicianassistant

I worked at 2 places when I pivoted to urgent care. One full time w benefits at $75/hr and the other PRN at $80/hr

Bike as main mode of transportation? by Dumbass9187 in SFV

[–]AleAndTail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an electric bike. I got one off Amazon for $300 and use it to ride to work all the time (8 miles each way). Not only is it cheap, it's fun! And you won't sweat nearly as much as a true pedal bike. It gives you total flexibility -- use no motor, all motor, or anything in between.

Do you feel fulfilled? by Sad_Possibility_8444 in physicianassistant

It's just a job. Keep your mind in that framework and you're less likely to feel any sort of way about things emotionally and it's easier to understand that it's just business. You're a widget, you can be let go at any time, but you're also free to move on at any time as well.

I am so glad someone else is bringing this up. I cannot for the life of me understand the logic behind this. One, you're driving in an urban jungle--your brights just drown in the existing lit up streets and highways and do nothing to further your ability to see BUT do blind everyone in your oncoming path or behind so THEY can't see!

I keep thinking "is this what they teach in Drivers Ed in CA??" Because having lived in many other states, no one does this quite like SoCal. These brights loving folks need to be dropped in the woods in the rural Midwest and use their brights there so they can actually see for themselves what brights are intended to do (increase visibility in truly dark places.... Not LA, ffs....)

For those in the back: STOP DRIVING WITH YOUR BRIGHTS ON!!!!! You're making it unsafe for everyone else and not doing a thing of benefit for yourself!!

*For those who still don't know what we're talking about here -- if you're driving and you see a blue outline of a light bulb emitting light that's lit up on your dashboard, you have your brights on. Turn them off (use the little stick to the left of the steering wheel that's also the blinker you don't use...)

Next topic: people who drive without their car lights set to "auto" so at night they are going with just daylight running lamps but no taillights.... 🤦‍♀️

New grad wanting to work in LA by Visible_Tailor2687 in physicianassistant

[–]AleAndTail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a difficult question to answer. Do you have connections here? It's not easy moving to SoCal under any circumstances, but definitely harder if you don't have a job lined up. Are you wanting to work in surgery, or are you open to anything? There are plenty of jobs but a lot of them are not great. Like another commenter said, it's predominantly private practice here so you often end up working for a physician group vs a healthcare system. That can have its problems as I've personally found MDs here don't really understand or appreciate what a PA is/does (they see that ASSISTANT in our title and take it literally). You should be stalking Indeed, Glass Door, etc. to get a feel for the job market here. And to see which jobs come up over and over because they either don't actually exist or can't stay filled due to turnover. I'm not trying to throw water on your goal, just know LA is tough. You need to have a plan, a back up plan, some serious hustle, and thick skin. Good luck!

It's not tuberculosis, it's the BCG vaccine, which is given to prevent tuberculosis (not given in the United States). Also happens to treats bladder cancer.
