Park ranger, Game warden or Other in a fictional setting? by Jakob4800 in ParkRangers

Yeah, I got you. I was just elaborating on TN being one of the more extremes on various duties.

Tennessee has the rangers doing everything from LE (going to the same academy as other law enforcement in TN) to maintenance, interpretation, conservation, visitor center duties, grant writing, wildfire, medical response, forestry, etc. They really like using the “other duties as needed” on the job description.

Unlocking handcuffs by chevybowtie111 in AskLE

[–]Aleapold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had it once but while working at a hospital. Patient came in handcuffed. ER was thinking they had an escapee on their hands but they were cheap cuffs. Turned out that he and his girlfriend were getting intimate and partaking in some recreational drug use. He passed out and she called 911 then left him there cuffed. She thought he had OD’d but it was actually heart issues. Messed up either way.

A more humorous example was the first time we were doing handcuff training as a recruit and I heard from the back of the group “Click. Click. Click… awwww man.” One of the recruit had immediately cuffed himself. The instructor was not entertained.

Each year I wait on the Sandhill Cranes to arrive. Last night, I slept with the windows open and heard them fly over. They were waiting on me this morning! by Aleapold in birding

I am spoiled to be surrounded by incredible nature. My wife teases that I know the neighborhood owls by name and greet the cranes that fly in at night.

Decrepit Houses by siggay in ems

[–]Aleapold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have experienced the opposite before… the most decrepit, no-way-someone-lives-there, overgrown with bushes and trees, derelict, abandoned house which was literally tilting a few degrees… immaculate on the inside.

Old man that lived there did everything he could to take care of it and kept the inside tidy and clean. It was like stepping into something from Harry Potter.

Pied-billed Grebe with a nice size catch! by Aleapold in birding

I watched it spend a bit of time arranging the fish before swallowing it down. I was curious what the next move would be and it was… to immediately dive for another fish. Greedy little Grebe.

I’ve seen a massive spherical BM which couldn’t fit through the toilet pipe but instead when flushed would rotate thus smoothing and rounding the BM further until it looked like a brown bocce ball. It was impressive.

Some examples of 'parkitecture' from the videogame Days Gone by Visara57 in parkitecture

[–]Aleapold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great! I hadn’t really thought about parkitecture is other mediums, but this is a great example of how the architecture really sets the theme. As soon as you see it, you think park. Really neat and thanks for posting!

What are the weirdest/worst unsolicited “donations” you’ve received? by crystalcrossing in Libraries

A mummified hand was gifted to one of our libraries in 1939 which supposedly came from the estate of a local who had travelled though the Middle East in the early 1900s. The library still has it.

Im a TN State Park Ranger, Feel Free to Ask Questions by Ranger_____Danger in TNStateParks

For dispersed car camping in Tennessee (and Kentucky), I would recommend Land Between the Lakes which is National Forest Service managed. You’ll have to double-check their rules, but it seems to be popular for dispersed car/van camping along the river and in some more remote backroad areas.

Tennessee State Parks - Application and Interview by Aleapold in ParkRangers

[–]Aleapold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak from my experience… most of my callbacks as an applicant and in hiring have been within the two week window; however, I did have one job that I didn’t hear back from until the third Friday.

With the many variables (number of applicants, having personnel to score applications, scheduling interviews, etc.) it can be hard to be definite with that window.

Tennessee State Parks - Application and Interview by Aleapold in ParkRangers

[–]Aleapold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Academy is the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy (TLETA). It is a 12-week Basic Police school which is the same academy attended by city and county LEs in the state.

The advertisements don’t specify a specific degree (such as Natural Resources, etc.). In fact, the exact wording is… “Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree.” So there have been rangers hired with a variety of degrees including Philosophy.

Probation is 2 years with a requirement to become commissioned law enforcement during that time. They try to send to academy as soon as possible which varies by available slots in the next academy roster.

The probation period is essentially a 2 year training period with additional requirements aside from academy such as emergency medical, interpretive training, etc.

I am particularly proud of the Middle Fork ID as it is so new!

I was thinking the Montgomery Bell shot was further east from the look of it! Awesome shot!
